I'm upgrading from Xperia 1 III to Xperia VI and I love it. My only complaint is the removal of the notification LED. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the telephoto Macro camera. Samsung is not an option, because they ditched the SD card slot. No SD card slot = no buy. Don't care about the loss of the 4k screen. I'd rather have more battery life.

Just sold my Xperia 1 III which has been a true fantastic companion for the last 3 years and I preordered I VI. Cant wait. Now typing from my Galaxy tablet....I really miss Sony making also tablets. 😢
IMO the Xperia 1 VI is the pinnacle of the smartphone development for the last couple of years, Sony fixed everything needs fixing and packed the latest and greatest there is in every aspect! I wish the Xperia 5 VI would get the same updates plus the wireless charging!
Great video! Lots of useful information for IMO feels like a tougher choice than Sony probably think it is with the VI looking like specs changes are conforming to iPhone. The screen info and formfactor info made it a no-brainer to buy the Xperia 1 V, recently as I rarely end up with less than 45% battery power at the end of 18hour day - with any Xperia I’ve owned with stamina mode and smart connect doing well. Safer sensible battery sizes and restrained charging at 30watts is a positive IMO when I look for a phone - versus dangerous levels at 150watts with added heat that ages batteries quicker. Camera review for snapshot comparisons an opinion is still fine, but for more technical users would love to see breakout videos comparing footage shot for maximum quality for post-editing across all phones, rather than the TV shop mode eyeball comparisons that are great for immediate sharing, but aren’t consistent with the raw capture look of footage shot on full cameras with substantially more detail to lever in post-edit on a workstation.
@@lilshrine I take it that you didn't spend the $1,300 that the rest of us did 2 and a half years ago. You might want to try an Xperia 10 series instead of getting an older 1 series.
I've never had a camera as good as my Lumia 950. I'm on the Xperia 1 IV at the moment, and I'm not blown away by it, especially for the price, so it will be a long time before I upgrade.
As soon as I'm forced to leave my S10+ I'm going to Sony, Asus's QC has made them not an option Shame Sony pulled out from the US market though on the Xperia...
Love them. I have an xz2 6gb ram version. Changed the battery 🔋, all still working great! But these new items... I really love them. But they are on my "never gonna afford" list sadly. 😔. Thank you for the review!
Sony clearly listened to Marques Brownlee's advice to make a flagship phone geared towards the general masses, but us longtime fans of the Xperia 1 line of phones want an upgraded over engineered Xperia 1 that us longtime enthusiasts have come to love and will purchase with 21:9 4k, notification light, and better one handed software mode usage. I heard that this new Xperia 1 phone is not getting released here in the US or maybe Sony wants to see how it will sell first in Japan before green lighting it for the US. I just hope Sony has a 21:9 4k upgraded over engineered phone for us longtime enthusiasts waiting in the wings, not just this boring generic everyone purchase this Xperia VI phone Sony is putting out for the masses.
@@gareths9574 not at all, espescially considering the mark V is getting much cheaper now, I'm good with my 21:9 ratio display that's my main reason to have it on the first place, and you can keep that "improved battery life" on VI...I'm not interested on VI, sony is kinda made me frustrated a bit with the VI, it's got pricier without notable improvement, that stupid telemacro is also not a good move considering the zoom lens getting much worse, they said sony doesn't follow trend and doesn't like gimmick? they clearly not doing so this time
@@bosenngantor9160 investing in an older device is never a good idea, I have a mk4, the issues I had with using gumbals etc was frustrating, along with other daily activities like using mounts and wireless chargers etc trying to get them to fit the cradle. Lower brightness. Aspect ratios watching videos, screen not usable outdoors, texting was difficult with the narrowed display, gaming was more difficult, the screen was nice watching a film, but so is the vi. Honestly it's a much better device size for many reasons and those are just a few off the top of my head.
No Green Tint or Black Crush for dark videos on 1 VI? Removal of ToF and RGBC IR sensors in favor of AI, which is not bad. But it would be better if we still have those modules combined with powerful AI (ToF & RGBC Hardware plus Sony AI software) that would put sony ahead. But hey sony ditched it. Loool.
@@indrockz92 ok thanks. The duration is a shame, it’s not long. It would be great if any phone over say £600 had a minimum of 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates as a minimum. I’ve enjoyed Sony phones that I’ve had but i can’t justify the price with such a short period of OS and security updates.
So much worse screen resolution is a shame for a flagship phone. Of course 4k on 1 V was too much but its too big of a downgrade imo. My old LG V30 that I have for over 6 years have better resolution than this new flagship. I think that all flagships should have at least 500ppi resolutions these days. This one being under 400ppi is lame, its worse than their own flagships from over 10 years ago (xperia z1/z2, released 2013 and 2014 respectively).
I'm glad that Sony has stuck with the 3.5mm input. I hate that so many manufacturers now have ditched it. Like, maybe I don't want to use bluetooth and waste my battery
Unless you already experienced 4k content on a 4k screen and if you regularly watch 4k content, you really dont need a 4k screen. Personally, im always willing to trade screen resolution for prolonged battery life, as thats whats most important *to me.* Others might prefer a higher resolution screen and thats fine. Although i think people make too big of a fuss about it in this case.
I see your point. But having a 4K means having a sharper screen at all times, even when downscaled. I really like that in my Xperia. So I find it hard to move to a less resolution screen
@@SpyPap No, they took it off the V. I miss that simple feature but it's not a real deal breaker. They do have apps that can mimic the notification dot on your screen tho if you really want it
I'd go for the OP12 if you're currently looking. You can lower the fps for movie apps to 60 and get 25 hours of screentime. You can get more by lowering resolution among other things, and it charges from 0 to 100 in 32 mins. I'm considering the Xperia V as a secondary handset for Black Friday. I miss hi res audio from the headphone jack.
@@BodDiv xperia 1 v automatically lowers fps for video. But outside of video content they are so behind with their constant 120hz, when they even said themselves they are prioritizing battery and sustainability (battery is still good though, I always charge to 80%). Also coming from OP I miss the fingerprint sensor actually working and screen off gestures also the 1 v could be wider
That is the only thing that matters for you. The 1V is unfortunately my first Sony phone since the Z1S and I love the aspect ratio of this screen. I definitely don't want to go back to a wider phone but when this one dies it looks like I might have to.
Mentioned the SD card, and discussed the speakers, but didn't even mention the headphone jack? A) it's rare to find one at all so it's worth a mention and B) it's supposed to be improved on the 1 VI so it's worth a discussion.
I swapped the 1vi for the 1V and I have to say that I find the 1vi much better.Display is great and much better for reading.I also think the camera is much better! The close focusing limit is significantly better for all lenses.I can't list it all here, I think the difference is really huge. The telemacro recordings are awesome and I don't need a tripod for them. I've already uploaded lots of pictures to Facebook.Oh yes and the autofocus is probably much better.
Some of the reason why I keep buying Sony phones since 2019 other than micro SD slot and near stock android is that tall 21:9 aspect ratio. I'm definitely going to get 1 Mk V if I ever need an upgrade, though newer Mk VI is definitely the better phone for the majority of people.
@@PeterEk31 21:9 aspect ratio on Mk V and older is actually the better experience for movies. Can't say the same for TV shows or RU-vid videos which mostly use 16:9 in this case Mk VI is better suited. Also Mk VI should be a better experience for Instagram or Tiktok use than Mk V...I don't use either of those but I do use split screen a lot which is where taller screen from previous Xperias shines. As I said, Mk VI is the phone majority of people would like whereas Mk V caters to niche audience like me.
@@archie7288 I'm on Xperia 1 Mk II, got it for $350 a couple year ago and it's fantastic. I'm skipping Mk III & IV because of heat issue Snapdragon 888 and 8 gen 1 caused. When Mk V finally at affordable price then I'm going for it.
I want to upgrade from an iPhone 15 Pro because the SD-Card is a gamechanger for me. I hate it that i need to put everything in the icloud to put it on my pc
I have a 1 IV and still not worth the upgrade. Unless they sort out their software support snd the crappy wide angle and zoom, ill be swapping brands. Shame as all my other stuff is sony. In low light the telephoto is so bad its unusable, even on a summer night
I got the Xperia 1 III, and was thinking about upgrading to the new model but after seeing that the 21:9 screen is gone, and no more 4K, I'd rather get the Xperia 1 V. They should have kept the 21:9 screen atleast or the 4K display, taking away both ruins the uniqueness.
Yup, I just don't know why so many users make excuses for a company to literally downgrade on the new models, especially when it's a top-of-the-line model that the Xperia 1 should have. I have been using my Xperia 1 III as a 4K content machine when I'm on the go, this includes RU-vid videos that support 1440P and 4K! I might need to get the Xperia 1 V until Sony brings back the features that they got rid of for their Xperia 1 phones. (Hopefully they bring them back tho!)
I have the mk 4 and now the mk6. The Mark 6 is far superior. Screen is much nicer. Are you basing your decision from a review? Or have you used the devices yourself?
Batter battery life, almost the same cameras, better brightness vs better resolution, a camera app that if it works it should be ported also on the mark V and the only real upgrade is probably the audio jack but there is a 500 euro difference. But can we make fun of Sony since they just follow the same pattern as Samsung and Apple?!It is an overall good flagship but priced poorly so maybe in january there will be a better deal.
Absolutely sad that they got rid of the 4K screen! I loved watching 4k content on it, especially since it's OLED and support HDR! I might have to get Mark V until Sony release a Xperia with such features back again!
I love the 21:9 screen on my xperia 1v and really hope sony brings it back. 4k is nice, although i would be fine with something like 1200p, granted the price drops to match.
I'm a Sony fanboy, and had the Xperia I ii, and quite simply it was the best mobile device i ever used. I was going to buy the new vi, but I just can't get over the fact that Sony isn't going to provide more than 3 years of android updates. Pixel is now 7 years and so are samsung flagship phones. I really wish Sony wasn't so stubborn on that, and its pricing.
Been using Sony for almost 14 years, today just bought the Mark V after using the Xperia 5 and Mark III combined the past 4.5 years, unless I feel very differently, this may be my last Sony phone ever. I appreciated Sony for having the guts to think different yet price their phones similar to Samsungs and Apple. With 1 iii they gave earphones, charger, cable and a nice box. For almost 1450$ the Xperia 1 VI gets a poverty spec box reminiscent of what we get in supermarket egg cartons, no notification lights, no dynamic vibration system, no 4K (ok its overrated) and zero accessories. I grudgingly bought the 1 V 512 gb for 1100$ due to poor battery life after 3 years of use in 1 iii, no notification lights, an egg carton box which I threw out immediately and zero accessories. I feel like a donkey for endorsing Sony's 4K marketing and a very weird 21:9 ratio which many were making fun of, only to have Sony make a U-Turn and then say they were wrong in the past and 1080p is just as good and 19.5:9 ratio is better, they just pissed me off with that. Been a pleasure being your customer, Sony, alas we must part ways at this point, your 1 VI is just insanely priced. The 1 V may serve me a couple of years, after that its Apple for me, way more consistent.
Yeah nah. I prefer 1 V for the 21:9 and 4k. Don't care for battery life that much... To pay THAT much more money. They could go for a thicker device to get a bigger battery like 6k mAh... I think most people wouldn't mind it. A step in the wrong direction.
Coming from 1iii now I have 1VI Oh boy!! is such a huge upgrade every single thing is better from old one from 4K to fullHD you cannot tell the difference. It's more brighter overall better
The MK6's unified camera app is indeed a huge downgrade. There is a good reason to seperate the camera app into 3 different apps in the old design which is never mentioned in any GSMArena review. Indeed in motion video world there are two different classes of video format and they have two different workflows addressing different requirements - video base and film based. Even Sony also offer two different lineup of hardware in her own professional solution division. Video base is more towards broadcasting and film based is more towards movie industry. E.g. video base = XDCAM camcoders Film based = CineAlta camcoders The old Video Pro app is indeed mimicking XDCAM operations and Cinema Pro app is mimicking CineAlta camcoders.
@@R3mbo69 why need porsche? Why need private jet? Why need mansion? Same reason as why need 4k. Because you can and you have something most people do not. And that feels great
Thanks for fair review. I wish SONY had provided zoom quality as SAMSUNG does, then it would undoubtedly been my first choice. I am still using my S8 and waiting to buy another brand
I've got a 1iii and love it, but the moment the price drops on the vi I'm in. Battery life is the clincher it's the only thing that lets the 1iii down.
The 1vi is the better phone overall but downgrading the screen and using the same sensors should've resulted a cheaper price to make it acceptable to Sony users. 21:9 was a main selling point for most buyers. I don't see 1V users buying this just for a bit better performance you won't notice, better battery life and better speakers while losing 21:9 4k screen and the pro camera apps
So I've been rocking a Galaxy S20+ since it released and have not been interested in upgrading since. But now I feel sometime in the near future I may want to upgrade to a new phone, and the Sony ones have been on my eye for quite while. What would be a good upgrade to go from a Galaxy S20+ user? The Xperia 5 V or the Xperia 1 VI?
