One of the reasons Avatar has such outstanding 3D is that there is almost always some horizontal camera movement going on. The parallaxing effect can add depth to even a 2D transfer, but it just exacerbates the effect in 3D. Other directors, even when they shot in 3D, did not think to have the same horizontal camera movement and it just makes the 3D seem less impressive. Good set design is another thing that greatly helps, having lots of different objects at different depths to help separate everything. The movie itself is OK at best, but yeah that 3D is probably as good as it's gonna get, until Avatar 2 anyway.

I have to agree. I saw this film in IMAX 3D not a few days ago and it was outstanding, even by the today's modern 3D standards. I like the IMAX 3D experience better than the Blu-ray 3D one, simply because it had the bigger screen and immersive sound. But man, this still a lot of fun to watch. I will have to say I did actually get HFR at the theater. But it was only present in a few scenes, and it was slightly distracting. Everything was brighter than its Blu-ray 3D counterpart. I don't know if that was the HDR working, though. None the less, this still built for IMAX 3D and well worth seeing.

Shane, first and most of all, thank you for even doing a review / overview like this. You're probably the only one still doing any work to accommodate 3D enthusiasts like us. My thoughts based on this video and my 3D experience with plasma and a C6 OLED: While I would love to see what you're seeing, after transitioning to passive 3D glasses, I came to the conclusion that 3D will never make a comeback with active glasses. They're too cumbersome and too much work. People just want to sit down and watch a movie without troubleshooting every single time you turn the system on. And glasses is almost too much of an ask without making them heavier and introducing flicker. What the real shame is is that flagship TVs no longer have 3D. As much as you talked about brightness, contrast, and color saturation with a projector, I am confident that new and future OLED TVs would blow your system (in this video) out of the water with 3D PQ. It is a real shame that we may never get such technology.
@yas1945
@yas1945 Год назад
I strongly agree. I just rewatched the first avatar on my old C6 3D OLED, and it was really nice. The 4k screen allows the full res of the dual 1080 bluray format to come through, and the fact that it is an HDR screen as well lets me compensate for the polarization with higher black level and boosted gamma. I can even add a 10% motion smoothing, which I usually detest, but I find at low levels it makes 3D content more comfortable. (for some reason I'm more sensitive to judder in 3D content, and I'm the type who keeps the MS firmly and totally OFF for all 2D content) Then a couple days later I went to see avatar 2 in IMAX 4k with high frame rate, and found it to be a rather lower quality 3D experience than my home setup. The brightness was OK, but the gamma was poorly set, and the HFR I felt was distracting and I found that it pulled me out of the story. I also found the screen was almost too big to be comfortable, even though I was seated in the last row. It's a real shame they only made really good passive home 3D displays for only one or two year, after a nearly a decade of far poorer ones. And most of the standard 3D theater showings even today are far too dim. It's no wonder the format does so poorly when people can so rarely see it at it's true potential... Alas, I feel luck I got my OLED when I did, and I'll be sad when it goes...

Awesome, video and coverage Shane! I definitely agree with you that there was some head scratching DNR applied in the new release of Avatar in theatres. Took a look at my 2D/3D Blu-ray of Avatar, as well as the extended version Blu-ray, and the creature effects offer, more tangible, refined detail. Things looked much more cartoony in the IMAX presentation I saw... from what I’ve read, different theatres were supplied different masters, based on theater spec and projector capabilities. But in some cases, the particular systems are having issues playing the content back. I assume because there could be misrepresentation in the technical specs along the way and you get a master that’s actually performing negatively with the equipment, and not doing the film justice. Quality control is paramount throughout the chain and I don’t think the movie theatres are doing their part from a technical perspective and service. I just think there’s much more room for error if you’re dealing with various masters of the same movie going out to movie houses. The same way that you could have a phenomenal piece of source content but if you don’t have your home cinema equipment properly set up or calibrated or in the hands of a technical team that can showcase the material, properly, you can get very mixed results. That could explain why my experience also had a raised brightness, limiting black level, color volume and overall dynamic range. If you’re seeking out this film in theaters, I would have a conversation with the cinema just to get a sense of what exactly it is you’re going to be watching (for example, which master, HDR, 4K, HFR… and if the projector is laser and so on…)

Gaming and watching movies on a 120inch screen is a game changer. 3D movies on this set up look MIND BLOWING.......especially Avatar. To get this kind of size and experience with a traditional TV, you'd need to spend around 50k.

@@jeffreybankers3988 who on earth can afford a 120inch 4K HDR TV with the colour accuracy of my triple laser UST projector? Practically no one. You'd have to spend around $150,000 for a TV like that. UST projectors are the future of home cinema. And by the way OLED TV's suck balls. My old OLED TV burnt in from gaming and the black levels they produce are totally over rated. They are too dark and details get crushed in the black areas. They also lack in brightness. My UST projector is a triple laser and produces MORE colours than OLED so im afraid you don't know what you're talking about. Respectfully.

So, is the new Sony 3D enabled but just doesnt have an RF emitter for RF shutter glasses? Does it have DLP sync for DLP glasses? And I have the Epson 2250 which I bought right after launch, but apparently they discontinued 3D on that model shortly after release due to element shortages during Covid. But I have also noticed that during 3D playback, frame interpolation is available sometimes and unavailable at other times (although I dont typically use it), really havent figured out the rhyme or reason.

Disagree, the white zones are too over exposed in the blu-ray. Also, the movie is better in the 2.39:1 3D aspect ratio. Agree with you with the crosstalk stuff. I have a benqtk850 projector and despite the rainbow effect it sometimes does, there is no crosstalk at all. I noticed some crosstalk on every single cinema, perhaps 9 or 10 shots in the entire movie. Also, the detail stuff you mention is due they over focussed the blu-ray prints. That over focussed stuff does not works at all on a 25 meters long screen. It destroys the continuity between the cg shots and the real shots. This passion about "crisp" is why I call "The over-focus myth". I have seen the fist Avatar several times on cinema. The best version possible is the first 2.39:1 3D version. Everything was at the same level: same exposition, not too over focussed stuff, same colours for real and cgi shots, and everything looked the same. That doesn't happen with any blu-ray transfer, and it's even worse in all the digital/streaming versions.

That other cable that came in the box is for connecting to the jvc 3D sync port, so maybe when you find yourself testing one next time you can do the same 3D test and report back. Great video as always!

In my experience motion smoothing can often introduce really bad artifacts in 3D blurays. I think it just isn't designed/tuned for it, at least on my TV. Fortunately, I can adjust the strength way down to like 10%, and I do find at that low setting that it helps eliminate the judder I experience with 3D while at the same time keeping the artifacts unnoticeable. I also like the fact that my TV remembers that I keep MS turned completely off for 2D content, and switches automatically.

A number of 4K projectors and many the older 4K TV's feature compatibility with the orignal Blu-Ray 3D frame packer standard , --> have the ability to up sample 1080 P 3D content to there 4K display , to the best of my knowledge there is no home viewing technology that is able to deliver 4K high frame rate "Yet" (The UHD Blu-ray standard does not "yet" include support for 3D stereoscopic content presentation) Avatar The Way of Water was released in Digital Cinema package's that are dependent upon the projection technology of the cinema where you watched the film At. Many cinemas surprisingly have older projectors that are limited to 2K content in 3D at 24 FPS , Given an advanced projector the studios would then issue a DCP with 4K, 48 FPS Dolby Vision , so the limitation is in presentation technology they have available, playing 4K high frame rate 3D is going to require many cinemas to invest in new projectors that will support this standard. they only thing I can think of at home that would support this standard at home right now are the newer 4K capable VR headsets , like the Playstation 2 VR unit . 3D really does Benefit from high native Frame rate as our visual cortex is much more sensitive to low frame rate issues with 3D content ,, Q and A dailog with Cameron on this subject , note what he has to say about 90 % of all cinimas out there , it was a real issue and he takes this issue very seriously it was found to be a big problem .. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RppIUq-YHGs.html

Get a Stewart they're around $4k. Well depending on size and style could be the same. Plus they have a better industry history and reputation. This is a $30k+ projector, don't go cheap on the screen. It'll outlast several projectors.

@@therealshanelee my front projector jvc. Rs 1000 but the cost of the screens markup probably more then 90% I don't know anybody here who would pay $4000 at the end of the day it's just a screen I'm disappointed not in my projector but in prices for a screen I also noticed the stores don't list price of screens they don't want you know the prices that right there is a red flag this may be the last front projector I buy

SONY pricing is all mixed up! The price of the 5000 is the same in UK as the USA, before taxes, but the 7000 in the UK is half the USA price! Oh, and the 6000 is off the menu in Europe - not available but I guess you would buy the half price 7000 instead if you had the spare cash.

The new Avatar sequel may re-ignite interest in 3D again, but unlikely for at home. Its the fact that you need to put on a pair of glasses that's always been the 3D killer. Autostereoscopic is what the people are demanding. Until that happens, then as a long term fan of 3D, at the home cinema at least, I think it is dead. At least the biggest TV manufacturers seem to believe so, since they stopped including in their mainstream tvs and Sky TV switched off their dedicated 3d channel. In terms of physical software, I think Australia is the only country to offer Lost World Dominion on 3D Blu ray. But Avatar has to be seen in a 3d imax 👍😁 I was very fond of my Panasinic 65" 3D OLED before I sold it on😁

I saw Avatar 3 times in its original release-no small feat because of its mediocrity as a story. Once in Dolby's system, once in RealD-I think and once in 2-D. The 2-D was the best. The 3-D was just a distraction. I won't bother with Avatar 2 in 3-D I also saw The Hobbit in HFR 3-D out of respect for Peter Jackson. It looked like crap.
