This is an in depth long term review of the Sony Zeiss Distagon FE 35mm f/1.4 Lens. After using it for a couple of years and a couple hundred shoots I can safely say it is one of my all time favorite lenses. Its one of the most versatile lenses in Sony's line up and works extremely well in almost any situation I have put it in. This lens is made for full frame cameras such as the a7iii but also performs very well on aps-c bodies, like the a6600. In this video I give an honest review of what I think are all the pros and cons of this lens and compare it to other similar lenses to help you decide if this lens if right for you.

Nice video man, there are too few reviews on this lens on RU-vid. I just bought my first E-mount body, and I knew that for my first glass I wanted a 35 prime. It was a huge split decision for me on this and the sigma 35 1.2 dn. It was a really hard choice, but I was dying to get that sigma on the a7riv. It is an awesome pairing!

Thanks! I'm planning on renting that sigma soon and comparing them. I've heard some people say the autofocus on it is amazing and some say it's a little lacking, so I'd really like to test that out myself. Depending on that I may have to switch over. Either way I'll do a video of the comparison!

I have this lens. I am not satisfied with the sharpness. It has an interesting character and nice colors, but focusing tends to be problematic. But I'd say the with a7iv is more accurate than the a7iii. My overall impression is embarrassed. Maybe I just have a bad copy (bought new in 2021). I probably wouldn't buy again, to be honest. But since I already own it, I don't want to sell it cheap. I'am keeping it for the dreamy character and colors. But 35mm is not my favorite, I prefer 50mm, 35mm I use little.

I did hear that all reported issues of this lens were corrected on copies after 2018, that sony even update it ssm motor, do you know something about? Which production date is yours? I’m really torn between this and the 1.8.

I did not hear about that, but that is very good news! Mine would definitely be an earlier copy. With all the kinks worked out I would easily recommend this one. It has so much character. In my opinion it's worth the extra money.

Stewart Media Digital I couldn’t find the person emails who told me about it but just in case If I buy one, I’ll be sure it is a copy from late 2018 , better from 2019 and up

Can be, because I bought mine in mid 2019 brand new from a retail shop and I have no issues with the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 at all. Also as expected from a Zeiss lens , the build quality is pretty top notch and you have that feel of luxury when holding or operating the lens. The only thing I am missing is weather sealing which I think should be a standard on a lens at this price tag. But hey, this lens is already 5 years old.

I am also using a Zeiss 35 lens. I feel that when shooting at apertures 1.4-2.5 it will be soft focus and everything is perfect at an aperture of 2.8-16. Can you tell me if my lens is faulty?
