Sony ZV-E1 | Why Sony might regret making this camera 

That demo of autoframing is actually quite impressive. This is more useful than I thought. For vloggers, $2200 is steep, but as B-cam for you pros, it's really good.

I know Gerald Undone says it a lot, and I'm glad you both also said it, but we need more people giving Sony shit for their firmware strategy on their "Old" cameras.

I think the reason 4k120 is coming later, has to be the overheating. I guess the next firmware will contain code to deal with heat management a bit better.

Everything about this camera sounds amazing but at the end of the day I want to shoot with something I know for certain won't overheat on me. Going with the FX30 instead.

Such a healthy dose of honesty in this Manny/Terry! Appreciate the real thoughts on this. It seems to fit that everyday Video Camera feel, not the big studio cam.

This is a really good B-cam or crash cam for a well-educated content creator, but it's also a REALLY good tourist-y camera with a pancake f/2.8 lens in a way that the FX3 and A7RV are not. It's small, it's light, and easily deployable. Since it has the same sensor and processor package as the A7SIII, it's also a really good "cheaper" camera for someone just starting out who DOES know what they're doing, but doesn't have $5K to spend on an FX3 and all the accessories that need to go with it.

Dan Watson got the camera to overheat in FIVE minutes shooting 4K60p in mild Florida sunlight. 4K120p isn't available at launch because Sony doesn't want bad press about the overheating. Quite strange frankly overheating is not mentioned once in this video, its the cameras biggest flaw. You can't cram so many specs and features in such a tiny body and not have severe overheat issues. This is definitely NOT a baby A7SIII/FX3 in actual usage. Those two have passive/active cooling to mitigate overheating. Let's be fully transparent here folks.

I want to get this cameras for real estate videos and will use inside the house but its hot here in Pakistan so wondering if it work for me in 4K 60 fbs will record 10-15 min video max at one time

I heard this somewhere and it makes sense. They didn't add 4k 120 initially so they could advertise no crop. They're going to add it as a firmware update because there's going to be a crop. My guess is that a crop helps reduce heat. The difference in this cam and the A7sii is the size which makes the zve1 worse at heat dissipation. They're going to balance the crop with heat dissipation. Most likely they have some data on how long people generally shoot in 4k 120.

This thing might be not cheap, but we had someone yesterday who wanted to buy an FX3 but he went for the E1. The people loved the camera and videographers just looked at it from the standpoint of an FX3 or A7SIII. I don't see this as THE vloggers camera. This is THE videographers camera. I was really blown away how the customers react on the camera. This is a really big hit for Sony. All the younger guys fall directly in love with it. I personally loved this super stabilized footage. This alone would be the reason for me to buy it, as I hate gimbals. This camera is the first Sony that lets you feel completely free in your movement. I'm really hyped as I didn't expected it to perform this good.

Nice overview. For vlogging it does make a lot of sense. The size seems very convenient. That auto aperture adjustment in automatic mode when multiple people are in the frame is smart. It's impressive how they manage to make the autoframing feature look decent. I did see that Gerald measured overheating times for streaming use that were too short for that style of content (assuming I didn't misinterpret his results), so there are some limitations. Hopefully Sony refreshes the ZV-E10 with the newer sensor. Then they'd really have a great option for the market they appear to be targeting.

When the FX30 comes in for less money, has a built in fan to deal with overheating, etc. it was a no brainer for me. I don't vlog and I use lights/reflectors/wide open lenses, so APS-C wasn't an issue for me.

I am still using the good old A7iii and this camera makes perfect sense to me. Period. It is going to be a huge upgrade for me.

For the vlogging market this is high in regular Photography or Videography it is mid range. But if video was my main thing for the price i would go with a FX30

It feels priced high to me for a camera targeting "vloggers" or more casual video creators. Although that auto tracking feature where you can film yourself and have the frame move with you is INCREDIBLE. I hope they make an a7cII with that feature. I have a74 but want a back up camera that is lighter smaller and can still take great photos unlike the ZV-e1 in terms of stills.

I think this camera is for vloggers who have been vlogging for a bit with their $1k camera and are looking to get a little more serious. The ergo cons might keep me from getting and just go with the fx3. Nonetheless are great camera. New stabilization is epic as well.

How are you supposed to vlog with it when you cant even see the LCD screen in the daytime cause it don't get bright enough

I have an fx3 and I cover tech events, this is perfect for me. The auto features are so convenient.

It may not be meant for people who want to buy an FX3, but by no doubt by the ludicrously mad mind of an update deprived Sony A7S3 rogue Sony technician this camera really is meant for people who want to buy the FX3 or the Sony A7S3, and maybe don't feel the need to film for more than 12 minutes 25fps, not to mention 120fps... I mean who films on that for more than 1 minute "bursts". Sony basically just made the most awesome checkmate of all time (not just on competitors, but on themselves), plus they're going to make us probably pay $100 for the 120fps update, that's just genius, because you know we're all going to buy that no questions asked. I'd say it's a June update so they have time to drop test all the overheating issues before bringing it to us. I pre-ordered it on the day it came out, so they have one sucker in the bag already 😂

...Manny, that video intro was OFF THE CHARTS!! That was AMAZING and truly shows the capabilities of the E1.... You also hit it on the head about current high-end camera owners buying this because they don't want to take their expensive equipment out everyday, or on shoots late at night or in risky/'sketchy' areas... I own an A1 and have always wanted an A7SIII or FX3: I can now buy this, use it for those uses, AND take advantage of the AI auto framing and improved AF - this is an instant buy for me! ON THE OTHER SIDE: If Sony cannot properly update my A1; just WHY should I think of purchasing a future A1II??? 😡

Appreciate the candidness! Another demographic this may be good for is someone like me, I'm a photographer that kinda wants to dabble in capturing video too and this seems to fit the bill of latest features, solid base performance, compact, and decent price!

BTW guys the stabilisation on this camera is a software update. You can achieve the same on any sony with gyro data, so any camera from the second wave. Sony has catalyst browse software and there's also third party software called gyroflow which is free and really good, we use it in fpv.

Might wonder if it's not shipping with 4k120 is due to overheating issues significantly reducing continuous record time limit and they don't want people focusing on that shortcoming during the initial sales out the gate. Other than that, it sounds like there's a lot to like.

I think it may not have shipped with 4k 120 is because it will likely overheat and they are still figuring out how to at least get a few minutes of it without overheating.

FINALLY someone that make an honest review about this camera, it is way too expensive for a "vlogger", not sure what Sony defines as a vlogger these days, hence why many people are angry about this camera and trolls fan boys like Peter Lindgren don't get! It is a B-Cam for a FX 3 user :)

With the A7Siii (other camera i was considering) still priced at £3.5k, it seems theres no contest! This ZV at £2.5k seems a way better choice 🤔

I do agree.. Right now, I got my ZV_E10, which is pretty much so good for me for what I use it for... but for low light stuff .. wish to go for the this new ZV_E1 .. which looks like the ZV_E10 on steroids but for the price tag . Price tag. Then why won't I go in for the X-T5?

It seems like a great camera but 2200 is extremely high for your average vlogger or content creator the A7C being about 600 cheaper rn, would be a better option in my opinion though this camera does look incredible

12:15 I know you were in the moment, but I doubt that it could replace some of your photo cameras. Without a mechanical shutter, and with so much flash you use that's a no go.

Travel camera and BTS camera purchase for me. FX6 and A7RV are my main cameras (video and stills). FX3 is still my main B cam for multicam shooting.

Very helpful video guys! Big thanks! Which lenses do you recommend for me as a travel vlogger? Do I still need a gimbal for this cam or is the dynamic active stabilization good enough for most situations?

I thought about grabbing one of these, but it came down to the record times before battery dying and overheating. Every video gave the sum up of 30-40 minutes and that’s it. That’s just not enough for me 🤷‍♂️ Also, I live in FL, so heat for this camera is its worst downfall.

No doubt Dexter tv show intro influenced you. I just wish you did this with a Canon. I know you were showcasing this camera, but the Canon color science is so nice. 4k 120 is not a deal breaker for me either. I just would run the footage through Topaz at 2x slowmo.

If you had to choose a travel/ hybrid camera, which would be a best option: Sony ZV-E1, Canon R7, R8 or Sony a7iii?

@TerryWarfield The very clear justifiable reason it doesn't have 4K 120p right out of the gate is the issue of thermal management or more like the lack there of. The body is much smaller than the other cameras you mentioned. I am pretty sure when it comes with the firmware in June it will be a time limited recording option.

Agree with the insight. Do the obvious and compare it to the R8 at $1500. For the entry market it’s aimed at, the R8 seems to be a better value and more versatile.

I'm more impressed by the lens performance of the tamron 17-28 than by the camera 😊❤ I would never guess, that you use this lens for that beautiful content!!! So for me I stay with A74 also for videos, and have no problem with its 60fps crop because this tamron lens compensate it with its zoom range

When they mentioned the crop that only applies to the stabilization tool, correct? I think they mentioned a 30% crop

I love the idea of this camera but that $2,200 price point is STEEP. When the FX30 is a workhorse of a camera that only comes in at $1,800. I already own an A7IV and would love a B-cam for vlogging and my professional work but for the price. I gotta go with the FX30. But that ZV-E1 sensor is SUPER CRISPY! So that’s where my conflict lies.

The release of Sony ZV-E1 is a clear sign that Sony is soon going to release an 8K Full-Frame camera with active cooling. It may be called an FX3II.
