The Social Determinants of Health (SDH) focus on the social, physical and economic factors that impact human health. Human SDH can directly negatively impact guardians’ ability to care for their companion animal, with many facing challenges to managing their companion animals’ welfare needs. SDH has been a framework engaged in human public policy for many years, and by integrating with the Five Domains of animal welfare, together we can inform future programs aiming to improve animal welfare outcomes. For example, in human health, SDH are reported to be 80% responsible for health outcomes of the population. By integrating the framework into animal welfare, it is anticipated that improvements in relinquishment outcomes can be achieved. This approach paves the way for innovative strategies, aimed at preserving the bond between companion animals and their guardians, ultimately preventing potential relinquishment of companion animals.
