Nice piece of kit, Reolink keep getting better. I think the elephant in the room is that it's somewhat fugly. They do some good looking domes. Maybe this would be a struggle to fit it into a dome without it being enormous but it is still fugly. Anyway good on em and you Paul. Hope Saturday is good to you.
This reference had me explaining the movie Short Circuit to my two boys. You are doing the lord's work reminding us to watch quality films with our kids.
80's films were so imaginative, funny, had the best music, and lovingly written and produced. I'm definately going to confiscate my kids' phones and tie them to chairs in front of the TV with a selection of 80's films to watch! LOL!
reolink are amazing. when i had 2 attempted thefts of my bike, anoth youtuber biker in london did a whole video on the 2 attempts and even talked about the camera system, even the people commenting were impressed
Looks like a very nice camera. Double lens makes perfect sense, such a great idea. A word of warning about Power over Ethernet ... keep those connections wrapped up like crazy. Whatever they tell you, they are not waterproof, and I've learned the hard way that its easy for any rain to fry your whole camera.
I have two of the older version and it has a few issues. They don't have a hardwired version so the spot lights could be brighter. And the RTSP push only has high and low. Missing mid so when you add it into your NVR system like Avertx it auto switches into black. And the ONVIF support is not very good and setting it up of the first time requires a lot of guess work.
When you're in playback, click the 3 dashes to the right of the date, that organises the playback into grid view. Much easier to find what you're looking for
One problem I have with Reolink is that you only get Alexa integration on individual cameras, I don’t get to view my cameras that came as a kit with the NVR.
I bought a couple of their bullet cams and an NVR in the last sales and finally got one fitted today. Lots of controls exposed in Home Assistant (I think I'll have to make an automation to give me individual zoom in and out 'buttons' though). IR and floodlights are very bright, mic is good, not tried the speaker yet. Loving all this local stuff from Reolink, also have the doorbell, so this might be a future upgrade if I feel the need for 180° fov.
I kind of want to mount one on an automatic bollard so it's hidden / protected when I'm home then rises up out of the ground when I leave. Gives no extra functionality except giving it an impressive entrance into the scene lol
Reolink has an official integration for Home Assistant, and it works really well - does it not support the Duo 3? Also, that intro with the Seal song was top notch.
I've been asking Reolink for two years now for a snooze mode. They also need to break down the human, pet and car notification schedules. I don't want stray cats setting off my notifications at 02:00, but I do want human notifications then. Truthfully though, I don't think their phone app or PC client is that bad, in fact I like the PC client very much and it is one of the main reasons I buy Reolink cameras.
Dude, I love your stuff.. I have a feeling we are in the same age group.. and I love the BttF chimes when you zoomed out! Huge BttF nerd myself. I used to own Griff's BMW from the 2nd film! See you in the future!
NUMBER 5!!!!! I literally screamed when you the comparison with it 😂😂😂😂. The younger kids probably think it’s a cousin from WALL-E 😂😂. But all jokes aside cool video as always 😎👍🏻
I have an older reolink (about 4y old), the mic is really good, you can hear people talk from about 5 or so meters away. Not sure if it has a speaker though.
Hi. Please consider doing a video on different smart button solutions. Would like to see if there are any trade-offs in price and capability between brands.
Great video. Did you compare costs at all to other cameras? I know costs change but that would have been a useful topic to cover to. Thanks thought I might just order one.
IMO if your going thru the trouble of hardwire PoE one might as well get an actual CCTV dvr system. Yes it will cost more but..😁Johnny 5 was awesome placement
I have the poe Duo 2 which is absolutely fantastic. It works in home assistant quite easily because the camera has ONVIF and RTSP (I won’t pretend I know what that means, but ‘it just woooorks!’. I presume this one is the same. I thought the Duo 2 was the best camera ever. Now I want this one. Thanks Paul.
interested to know if the motion detection has improved from the reolink 2? Had a mouse infestation and it just wouldn’t pick the little critters up. Ended up getting the Annke dual lens which captured everything perfectly.
Good to know! I think most cameras are trained to avoid anything that small, but you can set the motion detection for “animals”, so maybe it would do a better job!
I might be wrong but I don't remember Johnny 5 calling anyone a shlaaag. Did they mention what the price of the Duo 3 was going to be? I'm presuming if I get the Reolink NVR too, I'll be able to output the signal to a TV so I can view the image continuously.
I've had an 8MP (4 x 2MP) 180deg camera since 2017 🙂. I'm hoping to upgrade to a 32MP version in the future (4 x 8MP). They're great things to see a full 180 without fish-eye distortion. You mention blurring at 1:54, that is an example of a small 1/2.7" cmos at 8mp vs a properly sized 1/1.2" cmos for 8MP. (Reolink have yet to release a camera with such a better quality cmos sensor so there's some little blurring! 🙁).
So I'm making my morning latte, my Pomeranian(😄😄😄 yeah kinda) Bijou, who is not sure if she's a bitchy bipolar cat or a fetch loving guard dog decided to lose her mind for no reason as I'm watching you're video on my phone. So I go to yell at her and make sure there's not actually someone at my house cause, no, and that's right when you started with the, it puts the stick in the mouth, bit, so i didn't know what mouth was getting sticked. 😄 Please don't let anyone ever dull your potty humor, it's what makes me love your videos. Also. You had me at look at the view.. you lost me at the correction. 😭 No could storage? I'm out. Seriously though, I wish nest would put out cameras like the older generation before they put batteries in them. I hate those, we have those in the less important areas of concern. On an unrelated but yet related note, I've had cameras in my house for years cause kids are little bad ass lying assholes and I'm a sucker for the truth. So yeah have always had cameras. Recently had a medical issue that restricted my ability to drive for the next 6 months, so now I'm under the equivalent of house arrest under 24 hr surveillance! This is a good thing though. My bf works 20 minutes away and we're on the phone together all day as well, cause if my medical issue decides to come back he needs to be able to see me and what's going on. 😮💨 I wish these companies would look at the great medical applications their cameras can be applied to and focus on them as well, but it didn't matter to me until I got sick so I guess I'm niche in that. Anyway, to bring it back to what I was actually saying, I'm glad they don't have cloud storage cause that would suck to switch from nest to something else, i have 8 cameras.. Arggghhhh... Why can't it all be easy plug and play, view and record easily? 😭😵💫😒 Have a great weekend and another awesome vid! ETA: 😂😂😂 Schlong... I love the out takes, I watch the whole thing but love them the most.. Can I request a whole video one weekend of just your outtakes? Or maybe an option for your Patreon subscribers. (If you haven't already done or thought of it yet. Lol) 🥰
Didn't like the join in the middle. 3D sport cams are almost seamless these days, so I'd have thought they could have made a better effort on that front. Otherwise looked pretty decent.
I should have included in the video that you can adjust where it joins until there’s practically no seam. I did this once the camera was in one position but then I moved the camera not realising you need to then manually shift the seam, I guess because of different average focal points between the two locations.
Interesting and entertaining as always. Although no comments about what looked liked poor image stitching or adjustments. If the app takes a long time to start the play video then surely Amazon and Google are going to be the same? Or is the app just randomly clunky?? Sounds like a buffering issue because it's 16k Personally I don't light white lights on cameras, it's like a big flag that says here i am come and vandalise me with your sling shot... 😂
To clarify the delays, it was randomly delayed for playback of recorded videos (and not always) but solid for loading the live feed through the app. The delay for a live feed only seems to occur on Google and Amazon. The stitching was my bad, you can shift it manually and I set it up for one location not realising when I moved the camera to another location I would need to manually shift it to accommodate. I’m still not sure why that’s required, different average focal point I guess!
Now come along Paul, just how much time did you waste creating that ode to a broken seal then? Was it on the level of mini-Paul (as in, actual mini Paul, and, not THAT miniature Paul) riding a ladybird to triumph, or, did it take MUCH longer? 🤔
In general, I think that 8K is a bit of a scam, but in the case of security cameras, I can see the value of being able to zoom in on what I want to see. I lack that capacity on my venerable (read that as "bloody old") back of the garage cam with which I can generally determine that someone walking by it is essentially humanoid but I'm not at all able to discern much else when the subject doesn't cooperate and walk up to where the camera is and look up. [Aside on the guy dancing in the airport: Bluetooth earbuds have made it so that we don't immediately assume that someone who's having a conversation with thin air is reality-challenged. Now it looks as though I'll have to reconsider my assumptions of people who dance to no discernable music.] [Aside 2: You'd think by now the blond-haired guy would know not to let his child watch your videos.] NVR capability: On high-end security cameras, I like this option. There are a few questions: How many cameras you can hook up to one NVR unit? How much storage does the NVR have? [Aside 3: It would be interesting for there to be an option for the camera "eyes" to glow red in a menacing manner.] The app: It's too bad that camera manufacturers do such a good job of making good-quality cameras with lots of features, but they really need to work on their apps. All the great features in the world don't seem as great when you're trying to use them through a clunky app. Lack of Homekit and Home Assistant integration: I really do wish that camera manufacturers would make this sort of thing an obvious priority. Right now I'm using Blue Iris to integrate some nice cameras that really should be able to do that without something else doing the lifting for them. I'm not fond of having to work around something that takes just a little bit of time and effort to build in. Thanks again for a great review. I'm seriously going to look into this camera to replace one of my decrepit older ones.
Somehow, the Amazon delivery people are able to evade my current camera above the front door to my house. They must be trained Bezos ninjas. My camera has a limited field of view. This camera might solve that problem. I'd also like to see how well this works with Blue Iris. BI is my favorite software to use instead of the manufacturers nvr and software. Light years ahead.
Great video Paul as usual but isn't this locked into the Reolink eco system? I didn't hear you mention that in the "what's wrong". Also in my book two 4k cameras does not mean it's 8k. I have two 4k TV's, does that mean if I have them side by side I have an 8k TV, nope.
All the research I did suggested no ties to Reolink! 👍🏻 If you put two 4K TVs side by side and spread the picture across them then yes, the picture could technically be classed as 8K as the industry measures the pixels horizontally, at least in cameras where you’re not interested in looking at the sky
Depends on how many cameras you want. I would buy 4 of these and a Reolink NVR if money would allow! Be wary though, I can’t remember if someone said most of the Reolink NVR’s couldn’t make full use of the 8K!
Hmm, I think the marketing page J saw for this camera linked to a compatible NVR that was 16mp, I could be wrong but it would be pretty weird for them to unveil a 16MP camera that they couldn’t actually support with their own gear!
Most other brands of NVRs list based on 'decoding' or 'bandwidth' capability. E.g. Max bandwidth is 200MB/S which could be any combination of high/low resolution cameras with the total
Correct, a resolution of 7680x2160 pixels is commonly considered 8K. It meets the horizontal pixel count criterion for 8K resolution, which is typically defined as 7680 pixels.
They’re coming! I just did the math to see how long it will take me to get to a million subs at my current rate of growth. The good news is it’s only 63 years! 😂
Oh my god Paul! the short circuit references were absolutely amazing. that's exactly what I thought when I first saw this camera.. what's even more funny is you laugh just like Johnny number 5 does!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y7wj3bB6OU4.htmlsi=Wvx_Vl5R_jtxTumM
You need to be very careful legal when recording on a NAS that you are not breaking data protection laws when it comes to the length off time you can legally keep footage if you are public space or neighbours garden or driveway. The problem with having such a good microphone is you might be picking up peoples Private conversations which could also be a breach of data protection law.
I’m curious about this, I watch a few RU-vidrs that film people in the street without their permission and get into arguments with them about how they’re not protected in a public space. They then upload that to RU-vid AND even monetise it. I think RU-vid only block that stuff if it has kids in the footage unblurred, which suggests that privacy laws in the US allow for filming in a space where privacy cannot be expected. I suspect therefore that a CCTV camera recording your property and the street is not going to get you in any trouble, but would be interested to know more about the laws around this, ChatGPT is really woolly on it 🙄
@@paulhibbert you should team up with black belt banister do a video together. You could give us the technical side of different systems and he could give us the legal side off using different systems.
It used to be sufficient to have a CCTV sign visible (for companies at least) and my understanding is you can record but not share publicly (without permission) if the person can be identified. Agree that BBB would be a good brain to pick about this. Careful with the lighting, two baldies could blind us (with your brilliance).
@@paulhibbertYou can record peoples conversation without their knowledge but you can only play it back for personal use, that means you couldnt put what they say on youtube without their permission.
Thanks for the review, good idea to compare in a spreadsheet, or else they will just all end up being the best one since the last one. Oh and I've just realised that with your laugh, you're morphing into him more and more each video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gVrm6Qc6neM.htmlsi=OO2ryzw-1x3duUM0. 🤣 600k subs soon 👍
"If you're heavily into security this could be th camera for you". Sorry Paul, but people in the know will buy proper commercial grade CCTV cameras with better sensors from brands like Dahua and Hikvision for similar money. To be fair, I owned a Reolink many moons ago before I went and learnt what a proper CCTV setup should be from a forum for CCTV nerds - this is called a "toy" brand on there 😅
Yes, I am aware. Being Chinese doesn't mean anything though. They are in different market segments. Reolink makes consumer grade cameras and the other two make commercial grade. And as far as the banning goes, that is a political thing, nothing to do with the quality of the products.
Meh they all look like shit.why can't they make them with the same quality as phone can get? I can take pictures of the dam moon with my pixel 7 pro, yet I can't t read a license plate clearly with any security camera????
There will always be a small percentage who like your wit and jokes, but slag, really? stick to being a good presenter, giving a good basic overview and opinion and provide a deeper dive as an optional stream. First great to have a higher res camera and promoting NVR but also cover the limitations on how many cameras Vs res Vs Live stream V's FPS you might the compromise heart breaking. Also consider how many instances of AI e.g. face recognition, line cross, ANPR, loitering and count as you surely purchase with the future in mind rather than change the whole system?
That night footage shows how over blown the brightness is. The camera didn't capture the text on that board at all. Not ideal if you're trying to identify a car number plate
Reading from the SD card is very slow on my doorbell by them as well, but recordings from the branded NVR respond much quicker. Also, if you use home assistant, you can setup automations for enabling/disabling features such as the alarm.
I wanna love the Duo series but there's A LOT of design flaws: the whole mount is held together by a single bottom screw, the power cable is directly exposed and there's NO way to hide it, the provided mount is way too long and makes the camera wobble a lot and the sd card port is literally at the front in plain sight where everyone can see it. The camera doesn't even provide an alarm in case someone physically moves it. Ccan you imagine installing this camera in a reachable 2-3 meter wall (which is the recommended height by Reolink btw). It definitely doesn't pass the vandal/thief test. Not to mention is really ugly and sticks out a lot.
Depends what value you place on being able to zoom in on the image and make out faces at a greater distance, or in this case see the entire width of your yard!
