Shauno & Jesse are finally making real progress on Sooty MKII! In part 3 of Shaun Whale's 80 series Landcruiser rebuild/restoration, the boys tackle some of the hardest jobs so far:
- Removing & rebuilding wheel hubs, wheel bearings & brakes
- Removing & re-installing diff centres, axles & housings
- Replacing all of the shocks, springs & suspension bushes
- Making sure NO nut & bolt goes untouched!
- Slowly but surely, this true ground up 80 Series 4x4 build is coming together!

For wire brushing nooks and crannies I make a wire brush from old wire rope, splay the end a bit and chuck it in the drill, gets down into corners, even goes around corners.

Honestly Shaun’s, I respect you so much more as you know when to let experts do things, with engines, wiring and diffs, but are willing to do a fair bit and learn. Better than pretty much every other person

The old Landcruisers and Nissan's would have to be the best boys toys, so easy to work on and fix yourself without any fancy tools, loving the rebuild and can't wait to see it on the Cape York tracks. 👍

I’m sure it’s gonna be a BEAST and I can’t wait to see it in action! When you work on your own project it gives you great satisfaction of what you accomplished. When I built my buggy from the ground up I was so amazed at what I’ve done. Because I’ve never built any car before.

I did this to my Cherokee 3 years ago. Best investment ever. Even did complete break system. Its nice have a few years no trouble no worries. Wish i could have Dana 60s in it. But i don't wheel like i did before my back gave out. Live for snow wheeling. Nice build bye the way.

Shauno - I mean this constructively... Its worth downloading and reading the manual. at 19:25 when you install the front locking nut, the process involves tightening the nut, turning it several times, backing the nut off and retightening. Torque figures are pretty important even if you've rebuilt the hubs a bunch of times.
@R.Sole88109
@R.Sole88109 2 года назад
That's the way I was taught to torque things including wheel nuts. Not 30 ugga-duggas with a nutsmacker then a instant click with the torque wrench.

Red Rubber Grease on literally everything, and the seals literally slide in like a glove! Same with interference fit bearing races, lube her up and in they go! You guys not got yourselves a cheap 10tonne floor press? Made building my diffs up with lockers and installing my reduction gears a bloody work of art! Saved the busted knuckled and need for last minute trips to A&E and busted bearing races! 🤣💪🏼💪🏼

Shauno, you don't usually torque wheel bearings you use a balance scale and pull the wheel and it will be set to a certain weight, when in spec. That is how tight they need to be because too tight and the wheel will be locked and cause friction and heat up the bearings. Too loose and the bearings will wear and knock which is why you need to do a pull off test to get them right. It might be the old-fashioned way of doing this but, it is the best method.

"It's only dodgy "IF', it doesn't work".( to quote Shauno) 🤔Hmm? Really cool to see the new soot coming together, can't wait to hear it running and, see it move back and forth for a change instead of up and down on the hoist. Maybe the transfer case issue will be resolved in time for T.L.C.C Willow Glen challenge on the October long weekend. Might be a good place for sooty mk2's shake down run with the new low range reduction gearing. Just a suggestion.

Hey Shauno! Loving the build on sooty MKII she’s looking pretty sweet mate! Just got a question. Not often do we hear much about putting diff breathers in? And was wondering do you guys use them and have you put some in sooty? What do you think of them? I think they are a big part of looking after your diffs and other parts especially doing a lot of water crossing but I feel like a lot of people over look this. Keep up the good work boys! 🍻

I would think they have diff breathers, honestly I think that's one that is considered a good amount of the time. How about transfer and transmission breathers? You really never hear people talk about them. My big truck has all 4 breathers into the passenger compartment, if I can breath sitting in the truck still so can the gear.
