Thanks. Very interesting video. Amazing you could find a replacement piece of glass. It looked like it was taken from another panel as it had putty remnants on it. Have you ever drilled a hole into a piece to remove it? I was thinking that you could get at a non-edge piece that way. I have also seen a grinder used to remove just one "edge" of a piece of H-came so the new glass piece could be inserted. Then, copper foil was used to solder in the new piece of glass to the old came, followed by patina. However, the result may not be as good as the high quality work you always show.

I've seen that copper foil technique which I think would work ok but would be hard to pull off vertically - although actually next weeks video is all about vertical soldering. Yes, the replacement piece was salvaged from one of their neighbours windows. And no, I have never drilled a hole but I have scored and broken damaged glass to remove it.

@@SophiesStainedGlass You are right! Soldering copper foil on a vertical panel would be very hard. Hadn't thought of that! I look forward to your video about vertical soldering. I always worry about breaking other pieces when I remove a piece from a panel. It takes me forever. It is always a wonder to me at how professionals like yourself work so quickly.

Thanks! Great video. Do you ever use a small roller to get the came to lay back down after you fit the glass in. I have only done copper foil. Getting ready to take lead came glass!

Not a roller, a fid. My all time, multi-purpose favourite tool! Good luck with the lead!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It seems there is a reinforcing steel bar at mid-height but the panel moves a lot when you're working on it. Can you get it more tighten or add another bar or do you think it is enough as is ? I guess entry doors are common subjects for such problems...
@SophiesStainedGlass
@SophiesStainedGlass 2 года назад
Actually the ties on the bar had become detached so the bar wasn't doing it's job. Next week's video shows me soldering new ties on.

Where to get glazing cement or make it yourself
@SophiesStainedGlass
@SophiesStainedGlass 9 месяцев назад
Stained glass supply shops sell it (I don't know where you're based) or you can make it - or you can get regular putty and add black pigment.
@wendybroad5910

what was the cement called please
@SophiesStainedGlass
@SophiesStainedGlass 4 месяца назад
I can't remember what I used. It will either be the cement I use in my workshop which I make myself or ordinary putty with black pigment added.

What if only the solder is broken. Not the glass
@SophiesStainedGlass
@SophiesStainedGlass Год назад
It is possible to repair only the solder - it may not be the longest lasting of repairs but probably worth a go.
