I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who's watched this video! I know it's not big by RU-vid standards, but for a small RU-vidr, it's very exciting to see so many views coming on one of my videos.

I just finished reading the book and I have to agree with you, it was a bit of a tough read based on how thin the characters were and the lack of conflict in the plot, but I still enjoyed it in the end. All the best man, looking forward to seeing more videos from you:)

great explanation! I'm currently reading the book and I agree with the fact that it is a summation of descriptions of philosophers from the beginning to modern.

You might want to try keeping your camera on manual focus so it doesn't constantly readjust if you move around a bit. Other than that I think you did a great job explaining the premise and the strong/weak points without giving too much away. The "who would like this" mentions are great includes imo. One other suggestion is to consider giving a brief overview of the characters and how you felt about them specifically, as a lot of readers read books for the characters and that could help them decide if they want to read it. The same can be said for plot, and worldbuilding.

Thank you Josh. That's really helpful feedback! I'm going to try a new camera on the next video and I'll remember to use the manual focus function. I'll give a more specific overview of the characters etc

I like the way you reviewed the book. Being a teacher of literature, I need to know a bit of Philosophy. My students need it as well. That’s why, listened to your review with great interest.

This review is spot on. I felt exactly like you, the informative side is amazing but the story and literary side is weak. But it's still a good read.

Ehhh I struggle to read any book when the story and literature is weak, but I’m still going to tackle it this coming week. Thanks for the input.

I liked both the first and the second part very much. While the first part is a still "normal", yet extremely informative novel about philosophy, the second part shows Gaarder's genius for me. Sophie realizes she might be "only" a thought or a fictional character of an "almighty" author, and she tries to find a way to reach out of her "frame of existence" into the "world of the author" to change her fate. The most important topics of especially of the 20th century come into play now: self-reference, "is there a God?", "what is God?", "what is (my/the) world?" , obectivity, subjectivity, the limits of understanding, the newly-redescovered Plato, Gödel, Hofstadter, Wolfram ... This was such a blow, surely no novel has fascinated me that much as this book did.

It has its faults but I loved it. I am however always put off when an author uses the insulting term "Dark Ages" for the brilliant Middle Ages. Perhaps that was just the translation (what does the original Norwegian say?); I just put it down to a slightly bigoted character in a book. Anyway, it prompted me to start reading "The World According to Anna". Josh, to which films/books do you refer which have the same "reveal" at the end? BTW I have Bertrand Russell's book lined up, but I've thumbed through it, and his bias and bigotry shine bright, so I'm not really looking forward to that. Full disclosure, I have Masters in Philosophy, and another Masters in History. My Philosophy dissertation was on Nietzsche's "Genealogy".
