Nah, for a tourist, Asakusa is a really great area that has everything in a short walking distance. Both a Buddhist and Shinto temple, the pagoda as well as the giant lantern in the gate; plus, the stalls have all the tourist essentials such as snacks and toys. There's the underground street and a shotengai nearby, arcades, a Don Quijote, plenty of decent restaurants and food stalls around, a park by the river, the golden turd, and SkyTree across the river. Pre-pandemic, there was a public bathhouse that was very tourist/tattoo friendly with a rotenburo, but it's permanently closed now. Just by visiting this location, you can knock out all the generic tourist stuff in a single day.

lol and the rickshaw, because of how it is designed and balanced, isn't actually that hard to pull. Wheels make a big difference, and the whole thing is balanced such that the driver isn't taking much of a downward load either, as the wheels are supporting the weight of the passengers.

Well, from the viewpoint of the same culture as Iofi... We have teachings from our parents about how we should live our life( social norms, etc) and in our eyes, when we see the person carrying him/herself a cart seated by people, we got flashbacks of our ancestors struggling with work as a slave of a then colonial nation.. our mind can't accept such a thing much less being symbolically a part of the agressor.. so really the part of saying "it must have been heavy" is basically just saying "i don't want to be a part of that that looks anything resembling the past colonization life"

Well, I am Indonesian. It is quite understandable for Iofi to act like that. It is part of her culture ( I think she is Sundanese) that similar to me as Javanese, that we usually feel bad for the people who does a quite heavy job like that. We have public transportation like rickshaw in asakusa, called "becak". Even I know it's his job, I feel so bad for becak driver to carry me around the city. Usually, we pay more than usual for his job. Hope this information is useful.

As fellow Sundanese, I agree with Denny. Rather than riding the rickshaw, I would be more happy to just give the money and some food for the driver. The custom already in our blood since birth so it's kinda hard to change. Let's just say it's part of 'culture-gap''

The imagery of using another human being the way a farmer uses cattle to pull a plow is just wrong from my perspective. You could say “they chose this job”, but not likely, most people don’t have much of a choice in a class-based society because they need income to survive.
