Your videos are extremely addictive. You are like the miniature painter's Bob Ross, but painting things that are a bit more interesting :P.

as much as I love your work as a painter ( you convinced me to try, and with sucess because of your excellent teachings ) I couldn't stress enough how wonderful the editing on those videos is. The subtle camera moves when presenting an important color, the smooth transitions, the sense of zen but also a nice pacing to keep us in awe, that is a very very very good work. You sir, made something as boring as watching paint dry, exciting. Hard to figure what is the most impressive between the painting or the filming in your videos.

+Western Zoo What a wonderful comment; thank you so much! I am very sensitive to things like pacing, transitions, etc and like to treat the video itself as a work of art as much as I do the miniature I'm painting, so it sure is nice to feel appreciated. Thanks again!

Don't forget the excellent music that fits the theme and doesn't distract from the commentary. His production values are probably why he can't pump out painting videos every day but I think the wait is worth it.

I'd really like to say thank you for these tutorials. Wonderfully made, clear and interesting to watch. I a few year's ago after my first son was born nostalgia brought me back to Miniatures mostly large vehicles (that I made from scratch). At the start of the year I bought zombicide I found the transition from vehicles to miniatures much harder than I imagined, your tutorials really helped bridge the knowledge gap.

Hi Sorastro, I'm not sure if you'll see this comment because this video is so old but I wanted to leave it just the same. I just picked up Black Plague and the Necromancer is the first figure in that box that I'm going to attempt to paint. Hey Sorastro, I thought I'd post this update to my previous comment here in the hopes that it will save other painters the aggravation that I dealt with when I began my Black Plague painting odyssey lol. I didn't have a green toned primer like your army painters necrotic flesh so I bought Krylon Colormaxx paint + primer indoor outdoor Satin Avocado. It went on great and the color matches the army painter brand primer nearly exact. After giving it 24 hours to dry the trouble began when I started applying the base coats (citadel and army painter acrylics) to the mini. The paint was beading up into little pools and clumps on the surface of the primer like water does on the surface of a rainx treated car windshield. I had to go back and re-spray every mini with matte varnish to cover up the primer and then reapply my base coats. Not the end of the world but a time costing nuisance none the less. Hope this helps anyone else. Take care.

Yeah, I hope I'm also able to paint it so it looks at least not terrible. ;) Still waiting for my order of Zombicide and the colors. Do you have any experience with the Varnish Sprays from GW or Army Painter? Got three different products, but I'm not sure which one to pick. Army Painmter Anti-Shine Matt Varnish Army Painter Aegis Suit Satin Varnish GW Purity Seal The one you are using is very expensive compared to the other ones. At least here in Germany. ;)
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 7 лет назад
Hi Michael! Of the three products you list I would suggest trying the Army Painter Anti-Shine Matt Varnish. I've tried it before and it worked fine for me (except the nozzle got blocked despite my doing the usual turn-it-upside-down-and-clear thing) :)

Nicely done as always Sorastro, but I would advice people to have a look ad the Army Painter's paints made for Zombicide Black Plague, their Necromancer Cloak paint would be good to be used instead of the mix of Xereus Purple and German Grey, and the Necromancer Cloak paint is also good for making a soft highlight for black colors, also I made a Army Painter list of colors in the comment in the Sorastro's Zombicide: Black Plague Painting Guide - The Abomination video if anyone would be interested.

I love watching your tutorials Sorastro! I can see the result, which is awesome, but why combine the green with the red to dull it? Would you always use a complimentary colour in this way, or is it just because you are shading him to the slightly green anyway? Keep up the great tutorials, looking forward to more Zombicide: BP ones, so inspiring!

Hi! I'm afraid I've really no idea how much I'd charge; it would have to be quite a lot due to the number of hours it would take me, but it's a moot point since I'm not a commission painter anyway :)

Did you notice any advantage in the W&N brush over the Rosemary? Could you tell us the comparable army painter wash to the citadel wash colors you used? Thanks again for another great video!!
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 8 лет назад
Hi! The W&N has shorter bristles, but they're both nice brushes and I could see myself switching between then to paint different parts of a model. I'm afraid I don't really use Army Painter washes so can't really advise (Citadel may be more expensive but they're really excellent!) :)

Hi Sorastro, I'd be interested in the factors you consider with each model when determining what colour to prime the miniature in, and what benefits black primer has over white etc.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 8 лет назад
Hi Jason! I generally chose black for darker-colored miniatures since painting a dark color over white would take more layers to get a solid finish. I also like using black for miniatures that have lots of "bling" like the necromancer since we don't strictly have to get the brush into all of the little recesses as they're black by default :)

Does the matte varnish not kill the shine for the metallic armor and chains? If it does and I wanted to keep the shine, can I bring it back with the ardcoat or would that make it look strange? EDIT: Sorry forgot to mention that I love your videos man, great work.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 6 лет назад
Thanks Venti! The Dullcote sure does produce a very matte finish, but that doesn't mean the metallic flakes in the metallic paints aren't still reflective. But you could layer some gloss varnish on the armour for a shinier look for sure :)

Hi Sorastro have you ever used a wet palette? and if so would you recommend one?
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 7 лет назад
Hi! Regarding the use of a wet palette - I quite like to use one when I'm playing with ideas and working out my color schemes as they are handy for keeping the paint from drying and they do encourage a more "free-form" approach to mixing colors. I think I prefer a traditional palette for the tutorials however as it makes it easier for me to present nice clear ratios for people to follow :)

Hello my friend I've watched all your vids and I think you're amazing. I've recently bought Black Plague and want to start collecting paints, which would you say are the best to start with as I was going to buy the large army painter set for around£75 . I would really appreciate your opinion as I intend to use your excellent vids to teach myself from
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 7 лет назад
Hi Sean! Thanks for the kind words! In honestly I haven't tried enough of the Army Painter paints to really be able to offer a recommendation. I believe they're pretty good value for money though. I do have a lot of Vallejo paints and can therefor always recommend them (I have lots of Citadel too which are also good but more expensive and many people don't like the pots they come in). :)

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my message, roughly 25 years ago I used to collect war hammer miniatures and I was also quite an accomplished model constructor and painter, but as I said that was years ago so I have doubts concerning my ability now. I see your videos as a new introduction to a hobby that I used to love. In the past, my favourite part of miniature painting was the heros as I felt that I was creating a person, as you know paint flows differently with each model as you can paint two of the same character at the same time using the same colours and they will both have little nuances that give them their own characteristics. Thank you so much for giving me the confidence to at least begin on my new journey in to a world of hobby that I have loved since the early 80's.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 7 лет назад
You're very welcome Sean! I also left the hobby for a number of years, and returned to find myself enjoying it more than ever; I don't know if that's just my having a level of patience and skill that I lacked in my youth, but I'm happy to have helped others re-kindle the love of miniature painting! :)

I primed my necromancer already with the plagueskin as I did all the base figures. Is there a safe way to strip it? Would the Simple Green that I use with Reaper Bones work just as well?

Why did you decide to not do the zenithal priming for this model? I noticed in a lot of your other videos it's almost automatic that you do this style of priming.

So if I am a total newbie and wanted to start painting and following along what equipment do you reccomend picking up? Brushes, Paints, Palette, etc? Would probably start with Stormtroopers from IA because they seem easiest, not to mention replaceable.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 8 лет назад
Hi Keith! Apart from the essentials you've already mentioned, a craft knife for scraping mold lines off would be handy, as well some matte varnish (I get mine from here: www.antenocitisworkshop.com/testors-dullcote-spray.html). Any old paint palette will do. I would suggest starting with some zombies and trying the Quickshade out (see the first episode) as they're so much fun and pretty easy to do; they'll also help build your confidence before moving onto the trickier heroes etc. For paints I would recommend Citadel or Vallejo (or perhaps P3, Reaper etc. but Citadel and Vallejo might be easier to get hold of). :)
@keithbrown2711
@keithbrown2711 8 лет назад
Sorastro's Painting Thanks for the response you rock! I was probably going to go for Vallejo because of price and hear the squeeze bottles have advantages. It's a bit tricky though because I have to figure out what an equivalent color would be when you are using Citadel ones. What size brushes would you consider essential? You should think about doing a "starter equipment" kinda video would be really helpful.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 8 лет назад
Yeh - I have actually begun scripting a "Complete Beginner's Guide to Miniature Painting" but it may be a while.. regarding brushes I would seriously just get a size 1 and a size 2 (the Rosemary and Co. brushes listed in the video description would be great). For the zombies you can be quite free with the colors you choose, but there are conversion charts available that might help when converting colors from one range to another: (www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart) :)

i see a lot of people saying to use a wet palet. but all most of the tutorial vids i see dont use them. i use one but find it hard to get a constant consistancy with the paint. just wondering what your thoughts an them are.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 7 лет назад
Hi Eric! I often use a wet palette when I'm just trying ideas out (or if I ever just paint for myself which isn't often!) but I prefer a traditional palette for the videos to try to make them as easy-to-follow as possible. I tend to get a bit messy when I use a wet palette which is fine for me but it's not how I'd like to present the videos so much :)
@BradLacke
@BradLacke 7 лет назад
Eric Simoneau There's a bit of a learning curve definitely, which can be frustrating. It is very easy to make the palette too wet which causes you to lose control of your paint consistency. What I found to help was 1.) Use a name brand parchment/baking paper 2.) If you use the Sta-Wet, ditch the sponge and use a single sheet of paper towel 3.) Don't flip your paper to equally wet both sides - tons of How-to's say to do this, but its counterproductive and makes the palette paper too wet 4.) before putting paint on your palette, take a cloth or paper towel and remove any extra moisture 5.) err on the side of "too dry" - I let my paints gradually dry out and then save them with drops of water or medium. This way I stay in control. still, it takes hours for them to need help. This is infinitely preferable to having the paints hoover up a bunch of water right off the bat and turn into colored soup. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the fast reply. Few more questions. Why do you use the pallet that you use instead of something like a wet pallet? Also, after you hit your 2,000 dollar milestone and get a new computer would there be anymore milestones for new equipment or anything else to make these videos easier for you?
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 7 лет назад
+Joshua Terrazas Hi Joshua! Although I do sometimes like to use a wet palette when I'm testing ideas out, I quite like to use a traditional palette for the tutorials because it allows me to keep the ratios of paint used nice and clear and easy to follow (hopefully!). I think if I hit the next milestone I will then plan to upgrade my camera (again!) to allow 4K production but also to maybe have a dual-cam set up with one on the palette and one on the "action" (and another just for taking the still, transitional shots - which is what I do now). That would minimise the amount of camera re-positioning I have to do for sure :)

I'm a big fan of yours, Sorastro, but a tutorial for "beginners"? You have layering, wet-blends, and at least two stages of highlighting. Not sure that is for a beginner....at least not how I understand the term. Sorry, just don't want anyone to get frustrated if they aren't pulling this off.
@Sorastro
@Sorastro 8 лет назад
Thank you Jason! I do take you point. I suppose the term "beginners" has to be taken in context of the series; The layering and highlighting in multiple stages was introduced quite thoroughly in the previous episode, (not to mention that 60+ zombies were covered in episode 1) so I suppose technically anyone who has worked through the previous episodes is no longer a beginner as such!
