Ep 065 - Sorcerer (1977) revisited
Cinema: A to B takes a look back at a film that had been on Ben's to-see list for quite some time: the late William Friedkin's 1977 thriller Sorcerer starring Roy Scheider. Alec questions whether some creative decisions work in 2024. Ben lauds the tension built in the film's most memorable scene. The guys discuss some of the nuance Friedkin was attempting to build into the film as well as its ending. The conversation shifts to a discussion on the latter portion of Friedkin's career as well as his volatile personality. The guys discuss the importance of risk taking in cinema.

1950: George Arnaud releases his novel "LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR" (THE WAGES OF FEAR) 1953: Henri George Clouzot films it as "LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR" (THE WAGES OF FEAR) 1958: Howard W. Koch films it as "VIOLENT ROAD" AKA "HELL'S HIGHWAY" 1977: William Friedkin films it as "SORCERER" - after it tanks at the U.S box office it re-named "WAGES OF FEAR" for overseas release, it was also savagely re-edited by the studio removing all of the first hour of the movie, reinserting the backstories as flash backs. This version also differs to Bill Friedkin's preferred director's cut with several unique scenes - the opening is also slightly different with a long helicopter shot instead of the stone carving

We still don't understand what possessed Friedkin to come up with that title. A real shame.
