In the olden days the grain mill was most often the “Heart” of a community. Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. And hopefully bring back some of that “Heart” and maybe a little more Love.
You can find us on Instagram at Metcalf Mills.

We love growing our sugar cane also. Only difference I see is we fertilize ours heavy so it will grow fast and large so we can get all the juice we can out of it. Ours works out 10 gallons of juice per 100 stalks usually. 10 gallons of juice makes 1 gallon of syrup usually.

Fascinating video! We just call it syrup. My Papaw Wade was the main syrup maker in this area. Folks would ask him to come around and help them every fall. But he nor my daddy never grew it in my lifetime. I wish I had a place to grow it and I'd at least try. Papaw Wade was born in Madison County.

@@metcalfmills5679 That would be fun! His last name was Wilson. His father was Benjamin Wilson often called Bird. There's a Wilson family cemetery in the tip top of a pasture I've been there twice, but can't tell you how I got there 😀 We did drive through Marshall on the way. Both Ben and Papaw Wade are buried here though. Papaw's mother was a Graham also from Madison. Her father was Thomas and her name was Dorie.

Cataloging these skills in video and putting them on RU-vid is a great service. Thank you. I grew what I think is coral variety of sorghum two seasons ago and saved a head of it. I ended up planting it out and its up in the garden. I got a bit of mennonite sorghum and that is out on the rented land. Not sure if it is up yet. Rain has been sparse down here in the Piedmont region of NC.

When winnowing, throw a rag of scrap fabric in the copper troth to stop the bouncing early on. You should also tap out the bucket each time you empty it because the light stuff does stick around in the bottom of the bucket.

I would love to see you do a video on how you save all your different seeds. Tell how you save and store them and how long the seed stays good, and what equipment you use to plant the seed, or by hand. I've heard they've found many seeds in the Egyptian tombs that were still good. Makes you wonder why seeds you buy in the store go bad so quickly. I know you are very busy but maybe you'll get the chance to do an all seed video one day.😊

To viewers of this page, I have five 5 lb bags of Sugar Drip Sorghum seed that has been in the freezer 4 years. I am sure it will germinate because I have had seed in the freezer longer than that which made a crop. If you pay the shipping I will send it to you.

One thing I been wondering about now that I am growing more grains is seed cleaning machinery. Any recommendations on equipment for cleaning all manner of grain? I am about to harvest wheat and will do the harvest by hand and get at the seed by hand. But hopefully I will be growing wheat larger scale on the rented land next year. Also have upland rice that I been saving seed from. Also hope to grow rye this winter.

Wow than it is a lot of work, specially if anyone uses it as flour for bread . if u grow a lot it is overwhelming to do it by hand. In an other note but it is related. I know ur starting a business making mills do u have a mill that can do wet and dry. I’m looking into options for mills that can do wet and dry. For example in my country our staple is corn and we grind it in wet but the mill can also grind in dry. When there is season for wheat we use the mill to grind it dry and then make the dough but for the corn we first cook the corn and then grind it in wet. Do u have a mill like that?
