Sorrowful Jones, also known as Damon Runyon's Sorrowful Jones, is a 1949 American comedy-drama film directed by Sidney Lanfield. The film stars Lucille Ball and Bob Hope.
Sorrowful Jones was a remake of a 1934 Shirley Temple film, Little Miss Marker. In the film, a young girl is left with the notoriously cheap Sorrowful Jones (Hope) as a marker for a bet. When her father does not return, he learns that caring for a child interferes with his free-wheeling lifestyle. Lucille Ball plays a nightclub singer who is dating Sorrowful's boss. Ball's singing voice is provided by Annette Warren, who also sang for her in Fancy Pants and later provided the singing voice for Ava Gardner in Show Boat.

Thank you who ever you are for making this available, I'm a 61 year old man, lonely on this Thanksgiving night. This movie reminds me of when I was a child growing up and my father used to watch a lot of stuff like this. God bless you.

😊 Thank you. At 65, Bob Hope and Lucille Ball always make me happy. I can relate to the lonely on Thanksgiving. I had 6 children and have tried to celebrate the BIG holiday (holy days), on another days to avoid the same days of the kids in-laws. My son, not married, who passed away 3 years ago, complained about how lonely it was for him, when he had no place to go on the "DAY" everyone was celebrating. This year, I felt his sorrow and was lonely. I try to keep keep focusing on all of my blessings instead of what I have lost. It's not always easy, but it sure does help, to thank God for all of our blessing, instead of what we lost. Have a great day!!!!

The copy is absolutely perfect watching it on my big screen. The picture is crisp and sharp like it was produced very recently. Bob Hope is a relic of an older time when American entertainers could be relevant for decades. Like Lucille Ball, Bob entertained generations of audiences. When Bob wasn’t making content in Hollywood he traveled worldwide to entertain the troops. Countless people, including Lucille Ball’s own autobiography, said that Bob Hope was a fun guy to work with and he was never moody to his colleagues. It’s very sad that stuff like this will never be made again. Bob Hope and Lucille Ball were two members of the Greatest Generation. It was defined by frank, hard, dedicated workers. Who overcame the Twenties and ensuing Great Depression to serve in WW2. Who were responsible for pushing the Post War economic boom, who built a stable society and whom had integrity. Who were still beloved and cherished even long after their prime. Anyone who saw Bob Hope in the 1990’s can tell you this. They are sorely missed.

A very good comedy/drama film with Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, William Demarest and Bruce Cabot. My favorite character is "Once Over" Sam played by Tom Pedi. He would have made a good capo in 'The Godfather' film. I have not seen this classic in decades. Lucille Ball was one fantastic actress in feature films, but they were B-Movies, but she did say that she learned a lot just being in them and did helped her a lot at being better in her acting skills. The only problem that she had is she really couldn't sing, and her voice was dubbed over by other female singers in some of the films she was in that she portrayed as a singer like this one. Five Stars + and a thumbs up for this classic film.

Thank you for sharing this movie, I’m in my 70s and this brings back a lot of memories for me. I love this movie and two of the best comedians that graced the screen were Bob and Lucy, always going out of their way in entertaining the troops. This story was more of a serious story, but done well with a bit of humor in it as well. Love the horse being used for this film, and how it made a difference in her recovery. I really wish I knew who the little girl was, if it was Shirley Temple, I remember her more from earlier films than this one. My mother was a big fan of hers. It’s so beautiful not to hear or have all the cursing that is in today’s films. It actually doesn’t make the film better, but actually makes it worse, and takes away from the overall quality of the film itself. I’m sick and tired of hearing swearing words in films and if a movie has too much of it in it, I will actually walk out of theaters instead of watching it. This also goes for redundancy with sexual content and sexual overkill of sexual groin jokes and other material that degrades an otherwise good story. I look for good stories, good solid actors/actresses, good quality and substance in the film itself…if it doesn’t have this in them, I won’t watch them. One of my favorites right now is a foreign film called “Resurrection Ertugrul”, a Turkish film that has, for me, become a classic of historical significance and holds the same genre for me to that of the “Ben-Hur” film of the 1950s. It has a very strong historical story taken from various records of the early 1200s era, strong actors/actresses, and various battles and sword fights with the Byzantine empire, Mongolian invasion, Templar Knights, etc. It has qualities of faith, strength, courage, shows love without all the sexual overtones that is in today’s films, including NO vulgar language. Plus, also includes having 6 seasons with about 180 episodes in each season viewing time and lasting about an hour or two for each episode. For me, the quality and depth of this foreign series is very close to what Ben-Hur stood for. I have watched it many times from the beginning to the end of each season. I just wish films would go back to better quality made films than what I have been watching these days…none can hold a candle to the many films that made them classics of the past…that of quality and substance in storylines.

Back when Hope was a funny Comedic actor. His persona was as a weak and scared guy who survives by his wits, not fisticuffs. Lucy was always funny and a natural physical Comedian. Her face and voice were here weapons. She was hilarious! I also enjoyed his Road pictures with his partner and foil Bing Crosby. It was so funny how they constantly insulted each other and tried to one up the other. A great comedic pairing. Martin and Lewis, Abbot and Costello and Laurel and Hardy. One straight man and one crazy fool as the instigator. That formula worked so well. Like the Buddy picture. 48 hrs and Rush Hour. People relate to duos better than one person. It’s always good to have someone to push off of or play against. The tension and camaraderie a duo creates is what makes it entertaining and fun to watch.

I apologize for being negative but this is what America used to be and sadly is no more… Strangely, I was never a fan of Lucille Ball, but I’ve seen every single movie and TV show not to mention visiting her private studio at universal. She was that impactful to me there was something about her that made my mother an Italian immigrant, feel comfortable in America.. You’ll never see another icon like Bob hope. For him to handle a marriage a career and selfless service to our military through the USO is unmatchable buy any clown that thinks they are movie stars today. Bob Hope was a true movie star these clowns today with all those computers think that their something special but they’re not they’re fake.

Bob Hope was an immigrant too, from England, a fact many Americans choose to ignore.

Lucy was often dubbed but not in Dance, Girl Dance; Friendship song in Du Barry was a Lady; and Breezing Along with the Breeze in Long Long Trailer. Her schtick in I Love Lucy was she couldn't sing and couldn't dance - but she could do both. Even if actresses could sing ok they were often dubbed and men were not. Audrey Hepburn practiced to sing in "My Fair Lady," while she was allegedly pretty good, but was dubbed anyway. Thus, she did not win the Academy Award because of that, while Rex Harrison talked sang his songs and won the Academy Award for his part.
