Sorting the Doctor into Hogwarts Houses (Doctor Who Meets Harry Potter)

Sometimes it's just fun to mash up your preferred fandoms. So today, for no reason other than I just want to, I'm going to mash together the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Doctor Who. And I'm going to do it by sorting every incarnation of the Doctor (all fourteen to date) into one of the Hogwarts houses. So who will end up in Gryffindor? What about Slytherin? Ravenclaw must be home to a few. Any in Hufflepuff? Well, let's find out and let the angry disagreements commence, because when I'm bringing together two easily riled fandoms I can't imagine it's going to be polite agreement with what I'm about to lay out.

Eddie Redmayne channeling Matt Smith was glorious to see. Newt is one of my favorite male leads in a movie because he subverts or just ignores so much of what the audience EXPECTS male leads to be. He's not an action hero, he's not outgoing and confident. He's just a guy with lots of book smarts and a lot of love in his heart. My feelings for the latest movie aside, I love Newt to death.

I wouldn't have thought of the Ninth Doctor in Hufflepuff, but when you think about his reaction in "The Doctor Dances", you kind of realize this is the first time we see the real him. The joy at being able to save everyone for once really invigorates him for the remainder of the season. It's also literally my favorite moment from the show's entire history. So, I agree. Hufflepuff. You mentioned a lot of Hufflepuff at the end, and I think there is a reason for that trend as the Doctor obviously went through a lot in the Time War. It is as if he is trying to hold himself to higher moral standard after everything he has seen. I think that the Doctor's character involves traits from all houses, but I think that Hufflepuff is the one fartherst from his natural instincts after the war. That is why he feels it to be the most important. It is as if he is continually going against his inate nature and choosing Hufflepuff. And in the end, it is our choices far more than our abilities that determine who we are. We see this again and again in the NewWho Doctors. You mentioned Nine's choice in Parting of the Ways. But Ten also made a similar decision in the Sontaran two-parter, when he gives up his tactical advantage as he decides to go back on the ship and risk being destroyed himself only to make sure that he gives them a fair choice. When Eleven talks about "good men don't need rules", it talks to his darker impulses and his discipline to keep them in check. But it is perhaps seen clearest in Twelve, with his obsession with being "a good man", and also when he explains that it isn't about winning, but rather what is right and decent and kind. These are the Doctor's driving motivations. Without hope, without witness, without reward. I believe that the Doctor (or at least most of the latest incarnations) would all want to be sorted into Hufflepuff, since that is the definition of being "the Doctor" inside the Doctor's own mind.
@cedar7560
@cedar7560 5 лет назад
Honestly, ive only seen 9-11, I'm trying to catch up by finishing 11's chronologically, and I have to agree. The doctor seems to be trying to cling to Hufflepuff traits as it's imo the most empathetic traits. I even get a sense that 10 is a bit of a Hufflepuff, but I totally agree hes a Gryffindor bc of his confidence. Watching 10 I very much got the vibe that he really loves humans and the worlds in general and wants to protect them, but he does have that cocky grandiose of a Gryffindor.
@Kaiularalei
@Kaiularalei 5 лет назад
That would also explain why from 9 onwards there's a noticeable lack of any slytherin incarnations. The war doctor was, by necessity, a slytherin so it would make sense that all the incarnations of the doctor after him would instinctively shy away from any characteristics related to that version of themselves. Also it's interesting that before the war doctor, slytherin was the more common house in general, with even some of the others placed elsewhere having slytherin potential, yet that completely vanished afterwards.

@reynoldsVincent
@reynoldsVincent 5 лет назад
Luna is superficially scientific in a very left field, unconventional and illogical way. She knows things that turn out to be true and real, its just that most people are new or uninitiated or blind to the phenomena and theories she presents. Her whole family are devoted to experiments and heedless of risks involved. The Fourth Doctor has sufficient courage and self-esteem and comradeship to be a Gryffindor but is in practice always distracted in a very Ravenclaw manner and not very deeply people-oriented. Reminds me of Hermione in blending the two aspects, but he is, like Luna, interested in strange phenomena and prone to very dodgy ad hoc theories, AKA making things up, while collecting data. 12th Doctor very like, only he tends to persevere in his quirky investigations to find deeper details, and this makes him more grounded, more accountable to rationality and more capable of feelings toward unusual characters that impress him. I would tend to buy to notion that Missy commands his loyalty due to their shared roots and heritage than to a sense of experimentalism. 12 and Clara really got into each other's heads and hidden personality traits and this led to an almost dangerous co-dependence with each manipulating the other to new excess, so they shared Slytherin tendencies, at least he chose to relate to Clara's Slytheriness. Well down below others argue Four is totally Slytherin and I can see that. His lunacy and distraction could all be an act to get others to dismiss him. I remember when he ran for President of Gallifrey to escape charges, and everyone totally bought his being drunk on power. I wonder if Trump is a Slytherin now.

I think we can agree that some doctors present themselves differently to how they are inside. For example, 7 presented himself cheery and kind but was the darkest doctor and would do bad things to meet an end. The 9th doctor presented himself as ruthless and dark but when it came to it, he chose to die a coward than kill everyone. I feel 13 might be dark but present herself as kind as 12 said to be kind before he regenerated. But I feel she has some bad morales suffocating those spiders and willing to sacrifice Ryan's dad and not caring for people's feelings like when Ryan got slapped or Graham lost Grace. Some people present themselves differently to cover up their insecurity. A shy person might present themselves as confident to cover up their insecurity of being a lonely uncharismatic shy person.

I disagree on the War Doctor only. I think he's a gryffindor. He asked for a warrior, if you want a warrior you don't go to slytherin, slytherins are spies, assassins, tacticians and officers, they make the plans, give the orders, hunk every detail through a play it smart, taking as few risks as possible. A warrior is a Gryffindor, strong at heart, never scared to run into a battle whenever necessary.

I can see every decision you made, but there's one that I want to make an argument against. I would say Ten is definitely a Slytherin. He is trying to do the right thing, but this is never in his own accord. In Fires of Pompei it'sa Donna, who has to remind him to save SOMEONE, if he can't save everyone. In the Family of Blood two part story he gives the family a chance, but in the end he is outright mean and nasty by giving them what they want. His relationship with Martha is a very selfish one. He may be oblivious about Marthas feelings for him, but he keeps Martha around, because he wants someone by his side first and only to show Martha the wonders of the Universe as an afterthought. In turn left you see what Ten would be without someone showing him the right path. In Waters of Mars he gives in to his superiority Complex. Ten is a Slytherin, who is kept in check by the people around him. AND you forgot to sort the Valeyard (and maybe the Dreamdoctor) since he is an incarnation of the Doctor.
@quinnsinclair7028
@quinnsinclair7028 5 лет назад
RedClaw87 I would argue that Ten had the Griffindor’s hubris. Slytherin’s self assuredness comes from the idea that they personally are better than everyone else. Griffindor’s arrogance comes from the belief that they are infallibly on the right side. Ten always considered himself on the moral high ground. Not the most powerful, the most right.
@JoshuaHillmanatorHillman
@JoshuaHillmanatorHillman 5 лет назад
I would argue that ten was a literal Harry Potter case. He had elements of both Gryffindor, through his belief in his own moral high ground, as seen when confronting Harriet Jones, but he also just thinks he’s inherently better than people, and acts like a Slytherin, as shown through his initial treatment of Mickey, him disregarding the laws of time in Waters of Mars, and him saying to Lumic “I’d call you a genius except I’m in the room. He even tries to talk his way out of everything and quests for knowledge like a Ravenclaw. I think it’d be a Hat stall, followed by the hat placing him in either Gryffindor or Slytherin, as per his choice, and 10 would choose Gryffindor.
@inkmaster5480
@inkmaster5480 5 лет назад
I would disagree with the point of The Fires of Pompeii. In that episode he doesn't initially leave because he doesn't care about the people of Pompeii. He obviously does, all you have to do is look at him to see that. He doesn't save anyone because he thinks that he can't, and so he doesn't try. Donna finally convinces him to because she makes him realize that he could at least save _someone_ , even if he can't save everybody. He keeps Martha around not just because he wants someone to travel with, but because he likes her and wants her to travel with him. He only realizes that he needs someone to travel with him either while or after Martha traveled with him. It wasn't so much that he didn't have morals, just that he sometimes lost track of what they were. He lets his rage get the better of him, which I would argue is a very Gryffindor trait to have. Admittedly he was a bit arrogant and cocky, which is a very Gryffindor trait, but it wasn't so much of a superiority complex until he couldn't stand to hear people dying when he knew that he could do something about it, even though it meant breaking the rules. In breaking the rules it temporarily made him think that he was above the rules, until Captain Brooke's suicide snapped him out of it. Also, by the Dreamdoctor, do you mean the Dream Lord?

His great speeches were very ravenclaw His feelings and relationships with his companions are very puff His ability to keep his head cool in stressful situations is very gryffindor His resourcefulness, especially in the day of the doctor, is very slytherin. Ninth Doctor is a Slytherin. He is very ambitious when he said he will rescue Rose and blow up every Dalek. He chooses his companions very carefully. Almost like a purist. Tenth Doctor is a Gryffindor with all the swagger. Eleventh Doctor is a Ravenclaw because he just uses his mouth and wit to scare off his opponents. Twelfth Doctor is a Hufflepuff. @yonatanyonatano1192
@yonatanyonatano1192 3 года назад
One ambitious moment doesn’t really define your entire personality. By that standard, Eleven is a slytherin because he ambitiously went to rescue Amy and take down that entire organization. And saying he “chooses his companions very carefully” doesn’t feel right since the only person he said “no” to was Mickey in the first episode. Twelve uses his wit to scare people more often than Eleven does. Eleven doesn’t really use his words to scare people. It happened in his first episode, but that was after he already did something to end the threat. Almost every episode he succeeds in is from his actions and not his talking. Twelve on the other hand has spoken his way out of a few situations. It’s not every time he succeeds, but with the Zygons, the Mummy, Missy and a couple of others, it’s his words that win the day.

@@Ben-vf5gk That's not based on race or class, though. His standards are purely from a moral and personal level. I pretty much agree with your regeneration breakdown. Over all, though, when you look at the Doctor as the same man with that unchanging core, I'd say he's a Ravenclaw. Always his first resort is his knowledge and his gadgets, especially self-made gadgets. He has an insatiable thirst to KNOW, his curiosity gets him into nearly all the trouble he finds, and his brains are what get him out again. It's kinda interesting to me that the two big loves of his life have been a Gryffindor (Rose) and a Slytherin (River).

But he's also the clostest to Dumbledore in characterisation. Remember - Dumbledore, just like the second Doctor, had this person of the loveable old guy that appeared as a grandfather or fathre figure to those around him, but in reality he was a manipulative puppet master just like the seventh Doctor was. And Dumbledore was a Gryffindor. Plus, the novels later hinted at the Doctor not being Merlin, but that another Time Lord was Merlin and that the Doctor basically just babysat him.

Those are just masking the devious mastermind at work. Manipulating his 'pawns' (companions), his enemies, the schemes wrapped within schemes, wrapped within schemes. If the War Doctor was never to exists and you needed to pick one of the normal incarnations for the Time War, 7th Doctor would have been your best bet. He would do whatever it took without a doubt. He knew 'nice' and 'good' were two very different things, and if that meant betraying friendship for the sake of moulding that friend into a super-weapon for the greater good, so be it.

I can definately see why you put Jodie Whittaker into Hufflepuff, but my first instinct would be to place her in Ravenclaw. To me, her outstanding trait is her unending supply of curiousity. Previous Doctors have wanted us to believe that they always know what's going on at all times, and are keeping quiet about it until it's most impressive to show off their knowledge. But 13 never hides the fact that she has questions about everything and is in a constant process of putting all the puzzle pieces together until she finds the answer.

I would Argue that Smith really isn't anywhere near to a Hufflepuff because of what is under his childlike outward appearance. The Troughton did it because he wanted his enemies to underestimate him, but Smith did it because he couldn't live with what he became in the time war. You can see that at any moment he can snap into an ruthless and brutal Slytherin. The moment anything puts him under duress, he just has to finish his goal no matter what. In his second episode he has to choose what to do with the star whale and you can tell how furious he is with everyone when he finds out what's going on. His childlike glee drops and he channels his inner 5th Davison and tries to do what he thinks is right, no matter the cost to the star whale. Next episode when he sees a Dalek he completely loses his mind and starts whacking it with a spanner. In A Good Man Goes To War you have the entire Colonel Runaway scene and the "good men don't need rules, today's not the day I find out why I have so many" line. He wants to be a Hufflepuff but deep down he knows that no matter how hard he tries he still thinks he killed almost two and a half billion children. Troughton acted like a child to hide from his enemies, Smith did it to hide from himself.

Really liked your choices! The only one I'd disagree with is the War Doctor. You're right, he wouldn't be able to be a Gryffindor and do what he had to do. But I'd argue he also lacks the agency to be a Slytherin. He's a Hufflepuff footsoldier, loyal to the Time Lords and fighting their war for them. He's not making the decisions, he's following orders. That's why he snaps and goes rogue at the end. And that isn't because he's not a Hufflepuff at heart, it's because that loyalty was used against him, to force him to do what he knew to be evil. A Slytherin would have done what the Master did and just bolted.
@reynoldsVincent

The War Doctor is a tough one. I get the feeling the nature of war made him snap, but what of that strange indecision? Doomsday Device Rose had to cajole him and press him, make him see, and then he remained pliable to the other Doctors arguments and particularly to Clara, who we have established as a manipulative (but in a good way) Slytherin. Clara performs to remind him of his Doctor obligations, just as Ten needed reminding by his companions, sometimes by actual Rose. Hmm I begin to think you are right, War is a Hufflepuff, responsive to his friends and loyal to his people, to the point where he must end their madness by unthinkable deed. A deplorable dilemma for a Hufflepuff, but good argument.
@tomnorton4277

John Hurt's Doctor is definitely a Gryffindor. Remember, he wanted nothing to do with the Time War and knew the Time Lords were becoming as bad as the Daleks. There's a reason Paul McGann specifically referred to himself as "one of the nice ones". John Hurt was the rogue element that neither side could control, not an ordinary foot soldier. Even the way he carried himself conveyed a man who's fully aware that he's the most powerful man in the universe and because of this, he could afford to be affable when he wasn't on a battlefield. Hurt's Doctor was a perfect example of "Never underestimate an old man in a profession where men die young". There's a little moment where he's relaxing on the TARDIS' railing while Matt Smith makes a phone call, looking like he knows that dealing with a bunch of Zygons is going to be child's play compared to the Time War. Peter Capaldi had to rely on The Doctor of War's reputation in Hell Bent because he's only half the Doctor John Hurt was. Similar to Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi had to stand on the shoulders of giants because he would have utterly ruined Doctor Who on his own. He's just lucky that, unlike Jodie Whittaker, everybody around him managed to prop him up. So Capaldi's absolutely a Slytherin. Even the way he treated people he supposedly cared about like Clara Oswald was manipulative and sociopathic until he FINALLY proved that he cared in Heaven Sent. I remember Peter Capaldi's face when he said "Stay with me" in Face the Raven. I didn't buy that he actually cared that Clara was about to die. His eyes were wet but I instantly assumed they were crocodile tears because the rest of his face looked like he was about to tell her that he INTENDED for this to happen. Why is Peter Capaldi considered one of Scotland's best actors? The man's expressions, body language and deliveries are far more suitable for villains than the Doctor. He's not even in the same ballpark as David Tennant and even Sylvester McCoy proved that he's better at delivering an explanation for why he treats his companions like crap. For all the problems in Power of the Doctor, McCoy excelled in his scene with Ace whereas Capaldi acted like a sociopath who knew he'd been caught and was desperately grasping for excuses when he pretended that he respected Clara in Kill The Moon. Honestly, I'm still pissed off that John Hurt and Peter Capaldi weren't swapped around. Clara's brief interactions with John Hurt in Day of the Doctor were glimpses of how damn good Seasons 8 and 9 would have been if she teamed up with him. Peter Capaldi single handedly ruined Season 8 and parts of Season 9 so if Clara, Missy and even Davros and Ashildr hadn't been carrying his dead weight, I wouldn't consider him a legitimate Doctor.

Wrt the "funny little man" Doctors--Two, Seven, and I know someone who groups Eleven with them--the ones who use silliness to be underestimated and put their enemies off-guard: I don't think it's *all* affection. I think Two definitely has that excitability and likeability is at least partly real: look how he is woth his companions, after all. He's not a sharp man pretending to be nice, he's a nice man who knows how to be sharp. Seven is the most genuinely cold of the three. He acts friendly to most "ordinary" people (that is, neither foe nor close ally) because he *prefers* being able to be nice. It's fake, but it's fakeness that comes from a place of kindness. Eleven is putting on a show, but he's putting it on even for himself. He's throwing himself into childishness and silliness so as to not have to face the darkness.

In my opinion, sometimes people don't get Ravenclaw because of the misconception of intelligence. Ravenclaw is not the house of book nerdies and stuff, it's the house of intuition and imagination. That's explain why Hermione is less Ravenclaw than Luna and why Luna is a Ravenclaw: it's the capacity to think outside the boxes, the capacity to use both part of the brain, the logic-mathematics one and the creative one. It's pretty clear in the questions the Ravenclaw door asked and the answer Luna gave; Hermione is way to rigid for Ravenclaw. And be sorted it's more about the way you approach the world as first thing and the undercore which runs underneat: Eleven first approach goes through people and relations, not through intuitive observation such as a Ravenclaw; corkyness and strangery are just a plus. Same thing for Ten: he has strong elements towards Slytherin, but his primary approach to the world is through bravery, owning the room and big words to full his mouth. This is tipically Gryffindor. I would say: Slytherin and Ravenclaw are the observer, but on different fronts: A Ravenclaw observes something and tries to discover the inner mechanism, to imagine the why and the how, while the Slytherin observes something to weight pros and cons, he sticks more on the situation without the imagination of a Ravenclaw. A Hufflepuff is a carer, relies on people, takes energies from relationships and their lost drains him. If a Hufflepuff observes, he does it through the eyes of his family/friends/companions present and their reactions to things. A Griffyndor is the leader, the one who takes charge and believes to be always in the right due to a high personal standard. He doesn't observe, just goes into action. Action drives him.

I mostly agree, except for our current doctor. My sorting hat had a hat-stall and allowed her to decide between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. That intense exploratory nature fits both houses, and while she definitely cares about her friends (which led to the Hufflepuff idea), if you look at the first few episodes, she was originally trying to immediately leave and just do her own thing (which is very Ravenclaw). It's too early in her run for me to know which house she chose.

@Rebecca Woolf Ah. Ravenclaw with Hufflepuff tendencies here (although not at hat-stall levels; my Ravenclaw is clearly dominant, while my Hufflepuff is decent and decidedly higher than the other two houses). I can buy it that she'd be Hufflepuff with Ravenclaw tendencies. As I said, my sorting hat had a hat-stall, so I'd find it believable if she had something around 40-40 Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, and either could be more Hufflepuff like you or more Ravenclaw (but still more like you since I'm dominant Ravenclaw). But I do think she's got both at high and near-equal levels. Which is cool, 'cause both houses are awesome! :)

This is the problem with trying to sort _any_ Doctors into anything but Ravenclaw, though, isn't it? The Doctor in general almost always has strong Gryffindor and Ravenclaw leanings - and, depending on whether you favour the cosmic superhero angle to/interpretation of them or the mysterious traveller one, you could easily make the case that the Doctor in all is a Gryffindor or a Ravenclaw. So I think, to some degree, these tendencies have to be corrected for if we're to have an interesting discussion about sorting individual Doctors. And, as a Ravenclaw (with tendencies from all other houses) - I don't think Thirteen really has (pronouncedly) _more_ of a Ravenclaw streak than many/most of the other Doctors, so I think Hufflepuff is a better fit. I still think you can sort Doctors into Gryffindor and Ravenclaw with this system, mind you! I sort Ten into Gryffindor and Twelve into Ravenclaw (with tendencies from all other houses - one of the most likely Doctors to be a hatstall, IMO). That's because Ten has an even stronger Gryffindor streak than _most_ Doctors do - and it's evident that it informs, to a greater extent, his personal philosophy - while Twelve's personal philosophy has more Ravenclaw elements to counterbalance the Gryffindor ones than most Doctors ever seem to do... and he was mostly a Slytherin-type character in his earlier days, something he retained a few edgy qualities from - but later on, he developed a lot more into holding tight to Gryffindor-esque and Hufflepuff-ish morals and sensibilities and never letting them go.

Great idea for a video, and your arguments were all very well reasoned. There is an argument that deep down, ALL the Doctors are Gryffindors, since it seems to me that the core of who the Doctor is, is a person who is willing to risk/give their lives to help others.

That is more of a Hufflepuff trait. Yes, Gryffindors are very heroic and that fits with the doctors, but the Hufflepuffs do the heroic and dangerous thing because it is the right thing to do. They aren't being brave, but doing whatever is needed of them. I think that is much more in line with the Doctor's core philosophy.

I seem to like Ravenclaws and Slytherins the most, apparently. My favourites are 4, 5, 7, and 12.

i'd argue for 11 being a slytherin. there isn't a rule anywhere that says that slytherins can't enjoy quirky things. 11 took amy with him because there was something off about her childhood & he wanted to figure her out (and also, as was later made clear in "the god complex", he took her with him bc he wanted to be adored). He tricked the silence into orchestrating their own genocide. He kept his suspicions of amy's pregnancy from her until the last moment, then blew up an entire cyberman fleet to flex (and to save her). He closed the door on old amy in The Girl Who Waited. He traveled with Clara, again, to sort out her mystery (and this weird dynamic comes to a head in JTTCOTT: "what are you, a trick? a trap?"). All these things he's done because he's pragmatic and wants to find out the answers and doesn't concern himself (due to his own ignorance about social behaviors?) about how the people around him will feel. He tends to get attached sometime during this process, but before then he mostly uses people as pawns (see also: 11 making the TARDIS team watch his own "death") I mean, you can also argue that all the bad things he's done aren't necessarily slytherin things, and there's no rule that says a hufflepuff can't have a dark side. If anything, this video has sort of opened my eyes to the notion that hufflepuffs and slytherins can be kind of more alike than i thought.
