This video covers another SOTA Bandito expedition. This took place on January 30, 2021. Joel, KC4WZB, and I, N4HNH, hiked to the summit of Coosa Bald, SOTA designation W4G/NG-006, to take my LNR Precision MTR4B V2 on its maiden activation. Coosa Bald is a 10-point summit at 4,300 feet ASL. It has a 3-point Winter Bonus between December 1 and March 15. We earned those 3 Winter Bonus points during this expedition. The temperature at the summit was in the 20’s but the wind chill must have been around 12.
When we reached the summit we saw three people at the rock outcropping. Two of them had an FT-60R. Someone has advised them well. They also had an N9TAX roll-up J-Pole antenna. KO4KVG and KO4KVH, shown in a snapshot during this video, earned the Technician Class license two weeks ago. This was their second activation. They asked for some pointers and of course we helped. Our friend Jay, KC4JD, was monitoring 146.520 and he gave them their first contact. We have a great simplex footprint in North Georgia, with powerful stations, like Jay, listening out on 146.520, helping us SOTA activators.
