arrogant but only in the sense that hes got a right to be, because he and everyone else knows how good he is. i wouldnt even call it arrogant. arrogant is more 'im superior to you', whereas noel is more 'im good and i know im good, but i dont think im superior to you as a person'.
This guy's a MASTER at interviews. Always comes across so laidback n not giving a toss BUT in reality he's obviously very ambitious and determined to succeed even though he always so blase about success and fame.
People into heavy metal don't slit their wrists, your thinking of screamo...when you hear heavy metal you think of black Sabbath, Metallica or iron maiden, all 3 are not emo do not slit their wrists and are normal people, it's like me saying that people who listen to oasis slit their wrists
"There's a reason why they slit their wrists." funniest damn thing iv'e heard in a long time xD. im a metal head but tat comment was fucking hilarious. btw Noel, goth/emo and metal are ENTIRELY different lol
@AgentOfOblivion and Metallica are a typical sounding heavy metal band. But that's only because they influenced so many heavy metal bands, and the same goes for Oasis, they only sound like a typical indie rock band, because they influenced so many indie rock bands. No one sounded like Oasis before Oasis, but a lot of bands sound like Oasis, since Oasis came out.
@AgentOfOblivion Oasis and The Beatles never even sounded alike, there was always a clear Beatles influence in their music, but if you were to show someone who had never heard of The Beatles or Oasis' music, they would most likely not notice any similarities. And Oasis were responsible for making the whole Britpop genre popular, and so in a sense, along with the likes of Blur & Pulp, they created the sub-genre.
I do love Noel, respect his opinion and I don't get offended if he feels that way about metal, but yeah there's so much experimental and excellent metal music out there most people will never discover. It's shame that general public will miss so many great bands, in favor of all the shait that's in mainstream media.
When he talks about metal and then says 'goth music' lol I wonder what sort of bands he's even talking about? Megadeth? Metallica? Tool? Dream Theater? How can he not appreciate these bands, especially as a musician... I like Noel and Oasis, but they are really streamlined and simple compared to most metal, especially prog. I expect he's talking about scene bands like Bring me the horizon or some shit
Noel's "lost artist" of the age - a band called "Smaller" who could have been "bigger" Was this an actual band or a moment of impeccable wit from Noel?
amcd981 lol... yeah they were a band, led by digsy - the guy the oasis song digsy's dinner was based on. check out their tracks 'wherever love lies' and 'wasted'...
I'm not the biggest fan of metal, but even I know that at least some should be respected for their great musicianship. The things that some of them do on the guitar I haven't seen you do Noel.
Neil D'Monte Well that is a very sweeping statement. You could say a sweeping statement that metal is all drop d power chords and ridiculous shredding and fast solos. It means you are skilled yes, but skill doesn't always equate to good music. The Beatles are simple enough to play (IMO) does that make them boring or shit? Bob Dylan is shit because he didn't play Pantera?
Neil D'Monte The Beatles may suck in your opinion but you can't deny the influence they have had in all genres of music especially metal. Two words, Helter Skelter.
I "like" Oasis' first few albums, but I could EASILY imagine a world without those two albums. A world without Revolver, The Beatles (White Album) or Abbey Road? I don't want to live in that sad world. Now that's an actual question. ;)
8:50 only Noel "i'd like to think that my inmense and inmensurable talent would've somehow forced its way into the wolrd stage at some point" he laughs at his own arrogance lol
I love metal, doesn't bother me in the least that he doesn't like it. He is his own person and there is a lot of shit metal out there. haha. I learned long ago that you don't have to agree with your heros, or even like them that much.
Maybe metalheads (myself included) would be more open to him if he actually wrote something exciting. He also bitches on about Radiohead, saying they don't deserve their consistently good reviews because he can't understand them, or because they haven't defined a generation like he keeps believing Oasis did. I think the narrow minded person here is not the metalheads like he says, but only himself.
Maybe the generation defined Oasis...? Maybe in the UK where they had a bit more success, not so much in New Zealand. But look how much of a legacy they don't have in comparison to the artists that really did define an era. My memories of the 90's include Presidents of the USA's "Peaches". When all the bands started doing that "alternative rock" thing, where stuff got a bit weird without entirely freaking people out.
They definitely did in the UK, not so much in the US, where they were successful, but nothing compared to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. were much more influential in the US, IDK about the rest of the world.
Don't know why Noel Gallagher's hatred of metal surprises anyone here..Gallagher's early formative years were around or just after the punk explosion of the late seventies/early 80s ( he loves the Sex Pistols)..Punks hated heavy metal..the Clash hated Deep Purple..The Jam hated Iron Maiden and so on...for anyone , their early musical tastes will always have some influence , regardless of how tastes change over the years.
00:51 Noel says on the band reuniting "Liam said the thought of it makes him want to vomit which in my opinion is reason enough to get the band back together" love the response but it ain't gonna happen given the volatile relationship between them. But it always was like that but i guess in Noel's case you have a breaking point and remove yourself permanently from that situation.
noiseofthesilence Ciao Noise, sei Francesco?
the whole ripping of the posters to get to the questions is alright.. for the the first time but then its gets old real quick and its a bit shit in the end
As if the quality of a rock musician is decided by whether they can play metal... Neil D'Monte Anybody can play The Trooper solo. Especially Adrian's part.
Wow there's a lot of fucking idiots on the comments of this video. Noel's a shit guitarist? He's an exceptional guitarist compared to most guitarists and he's an exceptional songwriter too. Metal is stupid and being able to play it is NOT a right of passage
Hey, about criticising Heavy Metal, it's totally fine by Me, because I fucking hate it these days anyway! This is why I genuinely like Oasis, because they speak their minds with satisfaction and don't hold back!!!!
in a non homosexual way, he looks really good. looks better then when he was in his 30s. love that comment about smoking womens cigarettes. he kind of contradicts himself though. back in 1994 and on, he would say how he wants to be famous and all that that goes with being in a world famous band. now he says he didnt go chasing celebrity? make up your mind mate. still, he is a fucking genius who wrote the soundtrack to my teenage years
Jill Marabella i believe he said he wanted to be a rock star not i want to live a celebrities life he wanted all the perks with none of the hassle pretty much.
13:26 Ha bastard. An interview where he and his bro are arguing Liam says sumfing like "Sex Pistols is the greatest band" and he goes "They made ONE album !"
Gregor Viriot Noel slags off everything he doesn't like and then he makes a fuckface of himself by saying he likes The Sex Pistols. The Sex Pistols are fucking garbage.
It seems ridiculous to me that in this day and age , two brothers would not combine and inspire the best of both.. There's nothin I wouldn't do for my brother.
Don't forget that they did that for about 2 decades! Give them time. I guarantee you they'll eventually reunite. The Oasis reunion tour is without a doubt the most eagerly awaited reunion of the present. If they never get back together I'll be a sad man. A proper reunion with the original lineup with Bonehead and Guigsy would be pure bliss!
Oasis should have finished years before they did. Or be like U2 and go on for 150 years. Make your point and finish at the top of your game. Like Paul Weller with The Jam.
probably the only metal he has heard is the shite he sees on sky tv yeah that stuff is shite, there's a good few nwobhm tracks I could see him enjoying shame he won't ever get to hear them
He an interesting guy.but there are loads of people who end up in the wrong place. Life doesn't let us all be rockstars or millionaires and lots of band's don't make it.
Yes and no. He obviously is talking half about her and using his infatuation for her in representation of his genre and how it affects other women as well (while saying he only likes the thick ones XD) but yeah. It's drawing on the fact that he's 1/2+ a love song writer and he's illuminating that in the song. At least, that's what I took from it.
He's got a great turn of phrase, and unabashed confidence comes with the territory, but dismissive comments such as "the little people" jar somewhat, all the more considering he comes from a working class background in a northern city where that type of assertion is guaranteed to get you a slap. Too much time in London, me ol' china.
They should've had a big dueling rivalry type show, massive massive show, then half way through they should've joined up and that shit would've exploded likea bomb. It would've been disgustingly sick, but in a good way. Or bad I guess if you're in the band haha
I like Noel, hes a cool guy and i like to listen to him. However, as a guitarist (a mediocre one at that) youd think hed appreciate Metal, a genre where most of its musicians are far superior musicians compared to him and far superior lyrically. Maybe he doesnt have the mind to appreciate it
Heavy Metal was so bankrupt, sound wise in the mid 80s, a lot of the up and coming metal bands had to appropriate the hardcore punk sound and give it a much needed kick in the pants. The one metal band heads above anyone was and is, is Motorhead. Lemmy was a roadie for Hendrix whereas , all apologies to him, Noel was a roadie for Inspiral Carpets.
Classic Noel as usuall... although interesting to remember he is mates with Twiggy from Marilyn Manson, who has done a few b-side remixes for them... pretty funny to hear him slag off exactly their kind of schtick
From 12:07 to 12:50 : the BEST part of the interview!!!!!!!!! Jazz,... "all right is that how they call it now?? because it's used to be called SHIT when I was growing up.... heavy metal,... fcking hell...."
No... he said he hates it!! Does not matter how good you think a metal band or a metal song is... some people just don't like it as its too noisy. He would probably enjoy many different renditions of many metal songs if they were performed in other genres.
Heavy metal just isn't for some people. One heavy metal band isn't going to change someone's, who doesn't like heavy metal, opinion on the genre as a whole.
when i met my girlfriend i used to smoke Marlboro Red, now i smoke fucking Marlboro Light as she does. Se never quit tough. But women changes men, Noel is right.
you must be kidding .. he is here because of oasis .. he is just giving the honest answer take it or leave it .. and that is how rockers are suppose to act .. !
Hating on Bloc Party is a bit strong, Silent Alarm was a classic... lets be honest Noel is still living off those first 3 albums 20 years and a few hits after, his new stuff is alright but it aint setting the world alight, he's more famous for his opinion now than his music. Most people who go to his gigs are only really there for him to play the odd Oasis song, he's no Morrissey thats for sure. Bloc Party not been the same band since the drummer and bassist left, same as Kula Shakur werent the same when Jay Darlington left.
I've become somewhat disillusioned with metal myself, and not just because it has almost permanently turned the world of rock music into a one with a negative atmosphere (although that is one reason to hate it). Yes, I love the classics like Iron Maiden, Pantera, early Metallica, early stuff like Sabbath and Led Zep, plus some newer alt metal and even Dream Theater and some of the more interesting metalcore, but ultimately I feel the way it is today it has wounded the ambitions of young music fans. Here in the US it's always "I've got a guitar, I'm going to start a metal band!" and you end up with a billion metal bands in one local scene, and all of the songs are just really long, repetitive breakdowns and very dark, brain-dead screamed lyrics; it's either metalcore or some banal pop-punk; goodness, rock is dead, nobody's trying anymore.
garymimpy They were a rock band whose sound and aesthetic heavily influenced metal, so I count them as a sort of heavy metal band, at least one of the earliest ones.
Yes I understand your point of view but personally I never found they sound/ look like heavy metal even in its early form (but yeah they may have influenced them), because I think Black Sabbath is a better example of what an early heavy band was af the same era. Anyway it is always difficult to categorize a band.... But I don't like Led Zeppelin being called an heavy metal band, that's the point ! ^^ (sorry for the bad english, not my first language)
garymimpy It's ok, I understand everything you were saying. But it wouldn't be right if somebody came along and said "if there was no Led Zeppelin metal would still be as good as it is", true? So counting them as heavy metal might not be right, but associating them w/ it is being respectful and pointing out the impact they had on music and different sub-genres! :)
Thank you! This guy is one of the funniest and most interesting musicians around, you could listen to this guy all day! If only there were more like him.
