before the WW2, Japan was importing scrap metal from USA, due to being unable to produce high quality steel like USA, and the major material for "military sword(not traditional Japanese sword but partly like saber)" was actually the scrapped vehicle's flat spring. so his style is somehow "semi-traditional"
@islandblacksmith
@islandblacksmith 6 лет назад
this is not pre-war era steel, this is 125+ year old pre-industrial steel often made by a layering and forging process and with very similar simple alloy to traditional antique sword steel...hard to find but it is my treasure to work with it!

My senses convey to my mind, and into the sanguine chambers of my beating heart, something I cannot hope to fully express with language, nor truly decipher with cognition. It is fleetingly rare, like a wisp in the woods, that the very core of my being is so completely quaked and my imagination made so incendiary by a process such as this. Each process of this eminence becomes a bewitching performance of craftsmanship honed from the crucibles of dedication and epochal efforts. These rare displays of talent are witnessed so sparsely in a lifetime that they become extratemporal entrancements, sublimations of sensorium. From the ashes before me gracefully emerges a glowing blade of limitless purity and refinement. These raw materials are fused with such elegance that their final amalgamation emits whispers of sentience. A blade is born, vision and artistry made manifest, steadfast commitment imbues its adamantine body with a spirit of its own. Sparked into life by hammer and flame, a living blade rises within a cloud, buttressed with the serpentine hissing of water and cyclonic steam, its essence transmuted into legend, held firmly in place by the unerring grasp of a metallic messiah, his gauntlets glimmering in the glorious incandescence of a red-hot hearth. You have my highest possible admiration as a genuine master of an art form.

Hey quick question, you know the bamboo or wooden pegs you drive through Japanese blades, do you have to drill the holes on the tang and handle at slightly different angles to make them stay in better?
@islandblacksmith
@islandblacksmith 6 лет назад
there is no complete quick answer, but it is about the angle of taper and the exact placement of the holes, not about having different angles...mekugi (pegs) are hard timber bamboo, tsuka (handle cores) are japanese magnolia...

This may be a dumb question, but in your experience just how hardy is the bamboo peg construction? I'm not talking about standing up to outright abuse like the batoning that seems to have become so popular, but does it tend to loosen through regular use such as would be put on your tools for satoyama? do pegs ever get replaced due to shrinkage or ware?
@islandblacksmith
@islandblacksmith 6 лет назад
it is important to remember that the whole system works together, but years ago i did some testing of just the rice glue without mekugi or guard at all and the results were surprisingly good: islandblacksmith.ca/2014/03/sokui-rice-paste-glue-strength-testing/ yes, i agree that batoning is abuse (at very least using the wrong tool for the job) and something that should be reserved for survival situations...in the case of takedowns the handle can be quickly removed and the blade used on its own for other purposes (emergency spear, detail work, sterilized in boiling water, etc)...the peg is slightly tapered so it can adjust for changes, and the idea is they are easily replaceable, though it usually does not need to be done more than a couple of times per generation of users...
