Soul Reaver: Storyline 

Almost twenty years after this game's release and yet its dialogue, acting, music, art direction and general atmosphere still holds up. Incredible!

"I would choose integrity, Kain" one of the simplest, yet most important lines of dialogue in the series.

Opening "Kain was deified, the clans tells tales of him he was mortal. However his contempt for humanity drove him to create me and my brethren" I played this game at 10 years old and I didn't understand half the words said. Games need to be this smart

All of these games deserve a remake for the new consoles. Absolutely phenomenal story and the dialogue is some of the best in video games.

I agree with many that say this game should be remade. I personally find Raziel absolutely intriguing. Hoping a complete makeover won't include drastic change to character appearances. The storyline is the best ever without question as is the music. Upgrade this sh*t and make it happen!!

The Blood Omen and Soul Reaver games are some of the best ever made, i would love the all to be re-made. a fantastic story and brilliant voice acting that made them my all time favorite games.

Remaster This Game/ Series please

I was a kid when I played this game. It's hard to describe, half the dialogue I didn't understand a lick of it. However something (And I think this goes to show just how special the Legacy of Kain series was) in me resonated with the games. I KNEW that the way they spoke, the tone. This not just a game but a work of art. That is truly an accomplishment if you can make a child even realize that, even if they don't understand it.

It used to bug me that Kain didn't suffer the same devolution as his kids. I reckoned that after Raziel's execution, he used the Chronoplast to time-travel to Raziel's return. He might've planned all of this from the start, even before Raziel grew wings. The Nosgoth game (which would take place after Raziel's execution _and_ Kain's sudden disappearance, which left Kain's empire in disarray) would've confirmed my theory if it wasn't canceled.

This story is so compelling!

Oh snap! That writing is on point. So poetic. I will come back to this for some creative inspiration. The story drives all sorts of complexity with magic, mythology, and psychological transformation. Bang boom wow. I ate some magic brownies. Wow this is great.

This's missing one cutscene. :3 If you shift to the Spectral Realm in Dumah's throne room _before_ removing all of the stakes, you'll bump into his giant soul along with some extra dialogue from him (and an unbeatable fight if you try to fight him there).

The significance of Raziel going back in time to eventually become the soul trapped inside the Reaver is the key to understanding the motivations of Mobeus, and the Elder God, and Kain especially.

Better story than most films that I've seen, the combat was great and the weapons and environmental weapons were cool and I loved that if the humans saw you killing vampires they would aid you.

I hope there will be a remake.

One of the sickest, greatest and best storyline for a game series ever. And don't get me started on the dialog... man. They should seriously make a trilogy movie about this game series.

What I really find well made is that the way of explaining the gameplay is done in such a way that it still sounds fitting for the world you play in. Instead of saying something like "When your HP goes to zero you die" it´s "if you fail to feed or absorb to many wounds, this fragile matter will dissolve".

I honestly think that the teams are made of half of the same designers. Ever look at the health bar in Darksiders 2? It's the same as Raziel's.

Okay. This ground-breaking game came out for the original PlayStation, a 5th Generation console, in 1999. Now that the 8th Generation has begun, it would be q great time to reboot the Soul Reaver franchise. This time, however, I think the game's central playable character should be the vampire Raziel as he appears in the opening cinematic scene of this game. He looks so awesome, I can only imagine what a deadly, predatory warrior he would be, especially with his wings. I could imagine a storyline in which his clan is attacked by a Sarafan army or some other threat, and you have to defend your clan its territory. Maybe the story could involve trying to ask Kain for help during the attack and receiving none. After barely fending off the attack, the ending would be Raziel going to Kain for answers, and to warn of a larger impending threat to his clan, but it would end with the intro to Soul Reaver, and instead of helping Raziel, he destroys his wings and casts him into the abyss, allowing his clan to be wiped out. I don't know, that would be a good starting point for the storyline I think, a good basic outline. More details and subplots could be added, as their writers were always so masterful at exploring. Make it happen! Please, o wise video game gods?!

Thats makes me wonder. Raziel says it was just a moment after his execution and everything crumbled to dust. If there is something after death, speaking about real life, or time being dead is like ... blink of an eye.

Raziels calfs are fucking huge

This story deserves a reboot. I would love to play a prequel game as Raziel the vampire, as he looked in the intro to this game. I would love to play as Sarafan Raziel also, maybe start out as Sarafan, then transform into a vampire throughout the course of the story.

Still dislike how this video doesn’t have the main theme of the series playing during Kain and Raziel’s dialogue in the Sanctuary in SR1. It’s so fitting for that moment.

@venomousstring if I remember correctly, in an alternative ending, Raziel would devour the soul of Ariel, and together with Kain rule supreme in a Nosgoth falling apart. Obviously this got skipped quite early with the plans for Soul Reaver 2, but didn't stop them from using the pictures ^^

I think theses games are brilliant! The story within them are fantastic. They inspired me to start writing. As a project of my own I've written two books on the events taking place after Legacy of Kain Defiance. I spent a year studying what fans wanted to see and wrote it in to the story with knowledge of the games overall. I wasn't going to do 2nd one but when info about the Dark Prophesy appeared, I studied that and wrote that with elements of what 'would happen'

I can remember the speech about free will, the profund metaphor about the rock and the river... nostalgic memories.

Favorite video game series, but I never have heard an explanation why Raziel’s bat wings changed suddenly to angelic wings. Design mishap I assume, but wondered if a story had been concocted to explain it.

loved it all but you missed the cutscene with raziel and Dumah in the spectral realm, and also the scene where raziel holds the Ariel reaver in those space doors.

Very nice work to put all cinematics from SR1 together. Good old memories to this great game. I really hope they make someday a third Soul Reaver game. The entire story would be perfect for an hollywood movie. :)

I remember how pissed I was playing this on my PC and seeing "To be continued' I damn near broke the controller.

This entire series needs a remake, Blood Omen and Legacy of Kain. The hours I spent on those was some of the best in games

I remembered this after 24 or something years. Wow.

Also I never noticed this but Melchiah said "Released" when he died. I had a feeling that Raziel's brothers wanted to die, that they simply did not just attack you. They knew you could not die and they knew you could kill them.

I was thinking something similar, actually. That if he had avoided death and the Inn Keeper would've let him stay, he would've probably been assassinated in his room moments later by, possibly, the very same men. This is why this series is so incredible. It's so well-written and time within the game is so well-explained that it's completely possible to envision every outcome, without being a Streamer. I still wonder what would've happened if the rebellion would've defeated Nemesis?

I rewatch these videos and always ask myself why the hell there isn't a remaster of this or something. I know some of the voice actors have passed or moved on, but even with the old audio id love to see this game with more modern graphics. The story is just so good.

I would totally buy a compilation of all the Legacy of Kain games.

You forgot the exchange between Raziel and the Turelim. Also, I distinctly remember Raziel's theme playing when you first fought Kain.
