Stranger of Paradise also has some pretty heavy souls elements. It was made in Nioh’s engine, it’s got a Sekiro parry with a posture meter, Souls-esque level design, but since it’s a Final Fantasy game it’s also got some elements unique to that. I think it’s worth checking out if you haven’t already.
I'm a diehard Bloodborne fan so I absolutely will be checking out Crowsworn I love how these indie devs are starting to innovate at a freakishly fast pace and evolve on the framework of established genres, it seriously feels like we're getting more and more consistent about doing better than triple AAA games for sure

Have you ever heard of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos? It's a game I can warmly recommend. Came out in the first half of 2023 and is a prequel to the Zeno Clash games, which were first-person brawlers/beat-em-ups in a very unique world. But Clash takes third-person perspective and seems to have Soulslike influences. Many people put it in that category. If you're interested in learning about it, read on. (pretty big comment). To establish the setting: Zenozoik as the land is called, has kind of very, very early civilization, in a more obscure prehistoric time frame. It has wildlife based on animals such as the Entelodont ("Hell pig"), Deinotherium and Platybelodon, but most of the inhabitants are absolute freaks who look like they came from medieval monster paintings. Hieronymus Bosch and Drolatic Dreams of Pantagruel-type stuff. And even weirder. There's hardly any true humans, and the Zenos vary in such a way that there's not really any subspecies to speak of. Everyone's a different flavour of freak. Clash: Artifacts of Chaos specifically, as said before, is like a third-person brawler or beat-em-up. Closest comparisons i could make would be the PS2 game God Hand, with a bit of Absolver and Sifu. Instead of a focus on weapons, you have two "slots" for martial arts styles to switch between and three Special Attack inputs to customize. There are weapons, but they replace the main combo string, have durability and only come in Light and Heavy varieties. All fighting style inputs are similar: - Combo string - directional dodge, of which the dodge itself can become a directional attack (forward, backwards and sideways) - Attack from a run - Attack from a charge - Attack from a jump But all the *animations* are completely different from one another. Here's where it becomes more like a Souls-type game. - You can only Save by approaching a campfire and you have limited health flasks. - The world design is a bit corridor-like has many shortcuts for a more straightforward run back, after going through a tougher segment. - There is a "stamina" meter. - There is a "parry". I put the stamina and parry between quotations because they operate in a very different way from most Soulslikes, to my knowledge. - The Stamina bar is more of a Guard bar. As long as there's even a *little* bit of the meter left in the bar, you only experience 50% of the damage of a hit, and suffer less knockback. It depletes by running, attacking and getting hit, and recharges on its own after a bit. - The parry is a quick block move. This builds up a Special meter, and when an enemy hits it, they move slower for a few seconds. Alternatively, you can catch and return projectiles by putting up the parry/block at the right moment. Now here's a mechanic that it shares with Mortal Shell, albeit not as in-depth. - When you go to sleep using the tent at the campfire, you enter Pseudo's (the player character's) imaginary form. This thing can access through thorn bushes and has unique armor sets to find at nighttime compared to daytime Pseudo. And here's a thing all its own, which is also central to the lore and setting of the game: - There is only one law in the land. If you challenge someone to The Ritual, they have to comply. The Ritual is a short game of dice where you roll your dice on a little mat, then take turns placing value modifiers. You choose one of the titular Artifacts on your possession, which are essentially a special condition. The winner gets to enforce that condition in the upcoming fistfight, but the Artifact will be spent. Effects range from placing an arena of sticks and the first one to get knocked out has to take a free hit, to the loser having to smear themselves in something that attracts wasps which will deal damage when they're not moving, to banning weapons. Or tying their leg to a short pole with a length of rope to reduce their mobility, to even binding an opponent to a Summon artifact that you can use as an ally in a later fight. The Ritual is nigh completely optional too, bar three instances or so.If you don't want to bother-- the option's there! I find it hard to classify as an outright Soulslike, but i do see a number of influences or similarities to the genre which could have led to people categorizing it as one. What's your thoughts on it based on this comment? I very much hope that i have raised your interest with what I've mentioned here. Music is fffffUPPING fantastic, art style and direction is really incredible, and the voice acting, gameplay and story are good. Heck, at its worst (which would be in regards to how people got lost sometimes) i'd still say Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is solid.

I've never played a non FromSoft Soulslike game that was even close to as good as the worst FromSoft souls game, the Souls games make me want to replay them over and over, I've never felt like replaying a non From Soulslike, my favorite is probably Lords of The Fallen, I actually really enjoyed that one just because the outfits were fire, the game is pretty jank overall but I still had a lot of fun with it compared to any of the others I tried.
@@L_inkle Demons Souls is def my least fav, PS5 version too, I've never actually replayed it but I at least thought about it, whereas other Soulslikes I haven't really even considered trying again

If you’re having fun with 1 then stick with it, if you think it’s a bit slow or just not fun then I would try out 3. Starting with Ds1 is probably harder anyway. There’s also no “wrong,” way to play, if you wanna go in order go for it. If you want to jump in and out between then do it. The only thing you might sacrifice is lore connections, and you could watch lore videos if that’s an issue. As long as it’s fun go for it man

@DionPanday Im not gonna be too critical on Demon Souls because it was the first attempt in the genre, but I just don't like it because, unfortunately, it suffers from that fact, but to fair its an old game. As far as Dark Souls 2, I don't know if I was just trash at it during my playthrough but nearly everything about that game frustrated me except the story. The bosses felt unfun, the enemy placement aggravated me. Idk bro, DS2 just might not be for me, I beat the game but I never went back to it.
@@L_inkle I’ll agree with you on Dark souls 2 being not the best but it’s still fun. And Demons souls is a masterpiece. In what From game do you have a boss that permanently de-levels you or a boss that doesn’t attack you and defeats itself? Or a mechanic like World tendency, where if you die the game doesn’t help you but instead gets more challenging. Or even a soundtrack that actually mimics what a boss does. Demons souls is in a class of its own because there’s nothing quite like it.
