In this episode of "Sound Advice With Jacquire King," Grammy Award-winning producer, engineer, and mixer Jacquire King discusses the best ways of checking and evaluating your mix. What sorts of things should you be checking and listening for? What problems should you watch out for? Jacquire discusses the importance of using multiple speakers and headphones to check your mix. While it's critical to have a single pair of speakers that you know well and trust that you use as your primary reference, it's also valuable to use multiple speakers and headphones to check your mix once you think you have it finished. Jacquire talks about the usefulness of having alternatives in the studio itself, and also other alternatives you may want to consider, such as printing a mix that you're working on so you can take it to other systems to evaluate it. One of the best ways to make your mixes translate well is to take them away from the studio and listen to them in various environments out in the real world. Some suggestions include computer speakers, earbuds, car stereo systems, and headphones (including Jacquire's favorite model, the KRK KNS-8400). Also discussed are the properties a good monitor speaker should have, mindset and awareness, and the fresh perspective you can get when you listen to something the next day in a different environment.
