From 1979 to 1986 this bus was property of Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HHA) (No. 1983 / license plate 'HH-XR 1583').
The recording was made in October 2016, on the occasion of the Day of Historic Traffic ("Verkehrshistorischer Tag").
From the mid-1970s onwards, the development of the second VOV bus generation (Verband der offentlichen Verkehrsbetriebe = Association of Public Transport Companies) of standard buses (SL) started.
In contrast to buses of the first-generation (eg MB O 305, MAN SL 200), passengers should be facilitated at the entering by a lower vehicle floor.
The equipment with 55 percent low-cross-section tires (50 tires) should allow entering the bus with just one step.
In addition, the passenger information (larger target display) should be improved.
With the support of the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, in 1976 the company Fahrzeugwerkstatten Falkenried (FFG) presented a test bus, from which the prototype S80 (urban bus of the 1980s) was later developed.
Between 1979 and 1982 the companies MAN, Daimler-Benz and Neoplan built numerous prototypes with the designation S80.
For intercity traffic the U80 prototypes were developed, which were produced by the companies MAN, Daimler-Benz, Neoplan and Setra.
MAN/Goppel also built articulated buses of the type G80, but only three copies were delivered to the Rheinbahn Dusseldorf.
Later, the models MB O 405, MAN SL 202 and Neoplan N 416 models were developed from the S80 prototypes.
However, some innovations of the S80 did not reach the standard maturity, for example the 55 percent tires or the arrow-shaped turn signal at the rear.
The S80 prototypes were delivered to the following transport companies:
Hamburger Hochbahn AG (HHA) (6 x Daimler-Benz S80)
Rheinbahn AG Dusseldorf (6 x MAN S80)
Stadtwerke Munchen (SWM, Munich) (2 x MAN S80)
Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) (2 x Daimler-Benz S80)
Kieler Verkehrs-AG (KVG) (2 x Daimler-Benz S80)
Kasseler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft AG (KVG) (2 x Daimler-Benz S80)
Omnibus-Verkehr Ruoff GmbH, Waiblingen (Rems-Murr district) (2 x MAN S80)
Stadtwerke Trier GmbH (SWT) (2 x MAN S80)
Stadtwerke Monchengladbach (1 x MAN S80)
Kraftverkehr B. Menchen GmbH & Co. KG, Borken (1 x Neoplan S80)
By a loan or the subsequent resale of the buses the S80 also got to some other companies, where they were tested and used.
Until the mid-1990s, the last S80 were retired.
In addition to the historic bus 1983 in the HOV's collection (Hamburger Omnibusverein e.V.), there is also a MAN S80 (ex Rheinbahn AG, No. 8515) in the museum stock of the association Linie D e.V. in Dusseldorf.
