Hi Matt. I've used a Mix Pre 6 recently and found the preamps of the 302 to be much nicer. I liked the sound more and it seemed to be able to handle high gain much better. Without limiting, when recording something quite dynamic, the Mix Pre was pretty easy to clip and I was never able to push it past unity while the 302 had more headroom and I could record hotter without worrying about clipping. I've found only positive reviews about the Mix Pre's amazing preamps so it would be great if you could share your opinion on this.
yeah that is to be expected. the 302 is a high quality pro analog mixer with transformers. the mix pre 6 is prosumer gear. the people raving about mixpres are bedroom producers with no experience.
I wish SD would make something like the 442 but smaller and with only 3 channels. Then you could hook it up the the line inputs on the 633 for more fully functioning pre amps. With the 302 you are missing in and out options for the 3rd fader.
Why have a safety track on this unit if the limiters are so good. They're legendary for being almost unclipperble. I know nothing is 'unclipperble' but you know what I mean. I'm thinking of buying this unit.
I am using the 302 mixer with a SD 744T recorder. I have a boom mic (battery powered) going into the first input (Set to: Mic / DYN / and 48V) On the front of this mixer, it is set to go through both outputs (centered). I have my headphones plugged into the 744t and I can see the levels and I can also hear the audio, however when I record, and input the audio into Adobe Audition, I hear nothing, but can see the levels as if something is recorded. (I also have a boom mic and lav going directly into the recorder which works just fine). Any idea why this might be happening?
you need to test with the 302 headphones and check you hear it, or make sure your tracks are record enabled on your 744T or the level is too low, tricky to help without having the unit in front of me
I'm thinking about getting a used 302 on ebay. Is the model too old for 2018? How does it compare to the newer models (both SD and other brands)? Thank you very much
when audio hits the threshold only limiter will start to react, then why you are telling that you will not enable limiter on all channels.. it is always safe to keep the limiter on for all channels right?
