If you're interested in learning how to record and post process dialogue sound for video, please look at my courses available at school.learnlig...
In this week's Sound for Video Session we have a special guest: Allen Cavedo. Allen is a production sound mixer who has worked on a variety of commercial and narrative projects (links below). He’s here to help bring another perspective while we answer your questions:
- Please compare the Zoom F8 vs the Sound Devices MixPre-6?
- What are some good audio recorder options for a solo operator for even shoots?
- Why is my carefully normalized audio suddenly start clipping when I bring it from Audition to Premiere?
- When I have a dual mono clip, should I drop one of the channels before processing the audio?
- Will the NTG2 work ok with the Tascam DR-60DmkII in terms of noise performance?
- When should I use faders vs gain trim?
- Tips for recording 2 person interviews with one shotgun microphone?
- What are the general steps for processing recorded live music?
- What is the difference between Dialogue De-noise, Spectral De-noise, and Dialogue isolate in Izotope RX6?
- Should I always use the high pass filter on my microphone to eliminate low frequency noise?

Great information as always! Thanks for the comment on Sennheiser MKH-50 low cut filter. After your comment I went back and reviewed the MKH-50 manual. Sure enough it's not a normal low cut filter for low freq rumble; it's instead designed for proximity effect removal ( -4db reduction below 500hz). That's why it can effect dialog quality.

Thanks for the questions Gregg! On other mics, it can be a good strategy, particularly if your mixer doesn't have an analogue filter in front of the preamp.

Missed this somehow until today. I appreciate the opinions offered and as always, well done, and thanks! I have a selfish interest in this episode as my MixPre6 shipped yesterday from B&H. It's feature set for the money seems pretty good for my needs. Looking forward to more opinions on that unit and I look forward using it!

Thanks Horatio, Just received mine yesterday and used it on a voice-over job today. Sounding really great so far and should have an initial impressions episode up in the next 24 hours or so. Good luck with yours!

Curtis Judd Super cool. Looking forward to seeing what you have to say about it. Just finishing up playing with the inferno and gh5,fs7 and a99ii. Digging it very much and got all the kinks worked out with the gh5...working well now. Be well!

A cheap way to get into Sound Devices is with the original MixPre. You have pro XLR out, but with a 25db padded cable you can feed the mic input of a DSLR / DSLM camera. I've added a plate with a 1/4-20 hole on the bottom for mounting.

On the dual mono question, I don't totally go along with the "dead centre" rule of thumb for dialogue. When I do two-headed dialogues, such as a two person presentation, I routinely slightly pan L-head to L and R-head to R. Since they are stationary there's really not much work involved. Perhaps ultimately only I notice, but I like the effect.

+kipling1957 and good as long as the audience views with a stereo playback. Can be effected if played back mono.

This interview is almost 18 months old - although you do add the disclaimer that you're not familiar with the MixPre6. Please do an update.

Hi Curtis, thank you so much for all the great content that you do, it's really amazing!! I'm a cameraman and shoot corporate content and TV documentary stuff and am thinking about buying my own audio gear so I can provide my assistant with it myself on smaller productions. I am thinking about buying a mixpre-3 and would like to use it with my FS7 as a dual system recorder with nano lockit boxes. But for TV I have to be able to provide a single system solution. That's why I was thinking about getting a DI Box to convert the unbalanced output of the mixpre into two xlr connectors. I have spent the last couple of days trying to understand these boxes :) But I still don't get them fully Would you recommend an active or passive one if the goal is to get the signal from a mixpre to a Sony FS7 I am considering the Radial Engineering ProD2 (passive) and the Radial Engineering J48 Stereo (active). What I am not sure about is this: If you put a line signal into a passive DI box it comes out as a Mic Signal, right? So I would have to use the preamps of the FS7 to record the signal coming from the Mixpre through the ProD2. Correct?? That would kind of defeat the purpose of having such an amazing mixer with a low noisfloor right? On the other hand the J48 is powered by Phantom Power and thereby can output a line signal, but I can't set my FS7 to Line and Phanton Power at the same time. I can only activate the phantom power in combination with the mic input. so "mic+48" By adjusting my FS7 inputs to this setting the signal from the j48 stereo (active DI box) would be way too loud right??? As you can see I am confused. I really hope you can help me. Otherwise I have to get the Zoom F4 which does not have the analogue limiters that I would like to have :) Thank you so much again!!! Gabriel

Hi Gabriel, thanks! A question: When you work on TV jobs, will you have the MixPre-3 mounted on the camera rig? I'm thinking you could have an even simpler solution with unbalanced output to XLR adapters and go into the camera without a DI box at all (this combination almost always works). Then you could go into the camera line level. However, if you do need to run cables more than a meter or two, a DI box is a good idea and the Radial Engineering are good options. You would have to go through the microphone input on camera, so this would not be my preferred option.

Thank you for your answer Curtis! Unfortunately mounting the mixpre onto my camera is not an option for me because its too clunky and I would like a second person to adjust the levels for me. I did find this device on a forum: Palmer PLI-02. Its a two channel isolating transformer which is supposed to be able to turn the unbalanced signal into a balanced one without gain loss. And its also a passive device. So a line signal stays a line signal. I think I'll try that. Do you think this might work?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
That looks like a promising solution. Let us know how it goes!

Unbalanced signals works well with no problem until 18 feet. If you want more distance considerate behringer DI20, a 9V battery lasts 10 days I think.
