As someone who’s completely new to guitar pedals and effects, it blows my mind to know that so many of these effects are not some pre-programmed backing track, but sounds that occur in realtime as a response to Matt Bellamy’s playing. It explains the improvisation during live performances being so amazing, and my respect for Muse has skyrocketed even more.

Hi Harry. Love the sound like videos. They’ve helped me expand my pedal board and taught me allot. I was just wondering if it would be possible to make a video on how to use Logic Pro X to control the digitech whammy? I really want to recreate the sound. I’m really not very good with being able to use Logic Pro so it would be really appreciated if you could help. I appreciate it may not be possible though. Thanks, looking forward to the next content 😀🎸

I don’t know about that. The chords for the song are pretty much the same the whole way through. Slight variations on places. But it’s very straight forward

Henry Holz I use Logic Pro and draw in the midi messages and then loop them where I need to. Devices like the molten midi are not ideal to get the right tone

Great question. You're going to need an audio interface. You'll need one that has a midi out on it. It'll need to be able to communicate with your DAW, in this case for me Logic Pro. If its connected properly it will send the midi data to the whammy

i don't use reapers or ableton for my setup so im not much use there. you'd be better off looking at tutorials for using midi for those DAWs. i also don't share the midi file with anyone im afraid. the sequence is easy to find on the internet.

@@harrychrisrobin could you maybe tell me where you found your sequence cuz ive been searching all night with no result, i did manage that reaper worked. heres the sequence that i found but when i used it it didnt sound like muses. 1. off down off up off up off down off up off up off down off up 2. off up off down off up off down off down off up off down off up 3. off up off down off up off up off down off up off down off up its the three sequences all played on a different part. are these correct?

Hey Harry, great video.. Correct me if you can but do you get a midi cable and put it into the mac, then open logic pro and what do you do from there and what do you click to get on to the same page as you?

Thanks bud. I connect the midi cable to my audio interface which is connected to logic. To add midi messages you can open up the step editor which will let you write midi data You’ll need to make sure that logic is sending midi data that the whammy can detect and use

@@harrychrisrobin Thank you! But my amp isn't a online amp but can I still use it by using a audio in jack to connect it to my amp? Can I also connect the midi cable straight to the mac?

@@zac9528 as long as you can send midi to the whammy in real time and sync that pitch shifting with the song it’ll work. You don’t need the simulate your amp like I do for the pitch shifting effect to work

Hi there! Really nice job. Thanks for sharing - I learnt a lot! I used Ableton Live and "Whammy V-01" so in my model the channels used are 2 and 8 instead 1 and 7 as on yours. For all viewers please keep in mind this and check your manual to know the MIDI channels you need to program or it wont sound the same ;-) By the way, I'm not sure in which part you used the "patch C" with the Fuzz Factory. Is it really used? Thanks again and cheers from Spain.

I am aware that the whammy 4 and the whammy 5 need slightly different midi messages but I can only account for the gear I use so that is why I only show the data I use. If anyone is going to be programming their whammy pedals to do this they will be aware of this fact and would make the appropriate changes. I have not provided the midi data for this as I believe people should do the research themselves to programme this effect in themselves and not have me do it for them. It’s a much more rewarding experience this way. I had to figure out how to programme this myself years ago when I did it. All of the information needed is out there. The pitch shifting sequence particularly is very easy to find and as demonstrated in this video, it’s easy to program in logic for example. As I said, I can only reference the gear I have at my disposal so I cannot give a guide for ableton live, cue base, pro tools or any other daw as that is not what I use.

@@msreula I don't use the fuzz factory in this song as the sound doesn't fit well. I just showed what was in patch C as it was in the bank I was using. Since making that video i've moved from the PXL 8 to the boss ES 8 where I can now make much more song specific patches

How can you achieve sending MIDI messages to external device via Ableton? I ended up using cubase just for this because I didn't find out a way in Ableton. Thanks!

But I don't get it! Are you triggering the sequence directly from your computer? So, let's say, in a live situation you would have to bring your computer with you? Or are you using any other device (to trigger the sequence)? I read some comments and you say that the Molten is not that good for this effect… Would the RIFF STEP from STEP AUDIO do the work? Thank you so much in advance! You're amazing, by the way!

I trigger the midi sequence from my logic file. If I were to do this in a live setting I’d need to bring that with me. If it were with a band set up it would have to be done with a click track to keep everyone in time, if this were to go even slightly out of time the whole performance would be ruined.

Yeah, we use click track all the time so that wouldn't be a problem, what I don't want is to have a laptop right next to me (along with everything else) just to trigger this sequence in one song. Thank you so much! I think I will buy and try the RIFF STEP for this. Let's see how it goes :S

@@karimgurrola6472 Hey, I own a Riff Step and you can definitively program theses sequences ( I used the "one Shot" process, 16 steps, 2 bars and tempo around 63)

hey harry great video, quick question, i have a usb interface and it works by plugging in a lead from your guitar into the interface into the computer. would it work if i plug my wammy via the midi cable and get a adaptor to make it 1/4 jack, into my interface into my laptop. hopefully it makes sense. my interface is called aprogee jam

I don’t believe that would work. You need an audio interface that has a midi out port on it

@@zac9528 good question. im not sure, whenever i've sent midi to a whammy its been via an audio interface. the way to send midi in logic to external devices is to identify the target and im not sure you can do that with just a usb to midi cable. you might want to look into a midi interface, that should do the same job as what i use my audio interface for in this instance.

Does your whammy make a clicking sound when turning on and off?

The unit makes a clicking noise yes but it won’t come through much when you’re playing so you don’t have to worry about unwanted noise

Yeah the DT will do the same thing. The only difference is the midi messages you need to send. The manual for the DT will tell you what midi messages control which parameters
