Keith Richards on Robert Johnson: "When I first heard it, I said to Brian, “Who’s that?” “Robert Johnson”. I said, “Yeah, but who’s the other guy playing with him?” Because I was hearing two guitars, and it took me a long time to realize he was actually doing it all by himself."

I'm a bass player and don't really have any interest in watching all the video so give me shit if they mention it, but one of the theories behind Robert Johnson's "unique" sound is he was recorded playing a lot slower but when it was transferred to vinyl it speeded up increasing the pitch too. Only a theory though. Think I prefer to believe he just sold his soul at a crossroad :-)

@theakstonsrock

Yeah which explains why he sounds the way he does. It was recorded at one speed but the size of vinyl the recording was put on later played at a faster speed and the originals have gone missing... so we'll never know for sure.

Trouble is, all these are pretty sweet sounding X braced guitars. They're ALL really nice, but Johnson played a ladder braced L1, which naturally has less sustain and sounds more plunky. You'd be, in many ways, better off with a cheap Recording King plunker.

Let's be fair here. Given that this was an impossible task at short notice I think Mick did a bloody good job with that Gibson. Ironically if I had to look anywhere on the planet for a muso to do this vid it would be a certain gentleman who has a home in Guildford.

Another option at the low end is the Epiphone EL-00. It's not near as nice as the Gibson L-00 but it's still a very solid guitar. I found one ultra cheap on Craigslist then replaced the nut, saddle and pins with Graph Tech Tusq and I removed the pickguard. It sounds pretty sweet and is a great option if you don't want to spend huge money on a Gibson

Yes. Robert Johnson only recorded only a small number of known songs before he "died' / "was poisoned " at age 29. Thank you for educating your crowd on such a GREAT blues man!

Even if you would have thrown those guitars down the stairs into your basement and left them there for twenty years, sold your soul, AND could play rhythm and lead at the same time while singing, you still wouldn't even be able to come close to his playing style and sound. Very nice effort, though. Always look forward to Mick and Pete videos.

To my ears clapton style playing with guitars that don't prevent a smh response... a few of the comments were helpful though and your post is a powerful reminder of the stones in my pathway. I find that the 12 fret configuration give better low end response, mostly because the bridge is further back across a wider portion of the lower body. I have a 12 fret Grand Concert taylor that sounds like nothing else out there I have yet to hear.

17:28 Spot on! I had the same thing with my first Robert Johnson CD. This would be the real thing. Well, that was very tiny and thin sounding, next to my High Infidelty album of REO Speedwagon ;-) However, Dust my broom had already settled in my ears and in my heart with a compilation album by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers featuring both Clapton and Green. But, hey, everything was electric then, still trembling from punk and new wave, no Unplugged in sight. Let alone parlors.

Interesting video listening to the two guitars Robert Johnson was photographed with two different guitars the Gibson with 12 frets to the body and another with 14 to the body. But I think he recorded with a 14 fret to the body guitar because listening to the two different guitars the 14 Fret sounds closer. Robert played multiple guitars because he would sell them when he needed money.
