I feel like you guys nailed this one. Mostly because it's so dead simple, but still. That bit of Gimme Shelter made me feel things.

I think it was okay. They should try again by busting.

If it’s so simple why didn’t you write it or any of the other dozens of iconic tracks. It’s not simple as nobody plays it exactly like Keith or Mick Taylor who is a virtuoso or Jones or Wood. I find it easy to play lead pentatonic stuff that the so called shredders play but it’s hard to replicate Richards open G sound on a single coil P90 guitar. It’s never quite right just like these guys showed

Hey guys, Appreciate all the feedback and comments as always! With regard to the Ronny wood comments, we basically recreated the sounds from the record, and used Ronny's gear and rig as reference to get somewhere close in sound. We also used a LOT of live footage for reference, simply because the recording quality was better. Most old stones records are so muffled in sound and generally noisy records, it's hard to hear the true tone of the instruments and rigs. Either way, we had fun on this one. Same time next week, for a new episode :-)

Bass part: ·Bill Wyman -Epiphone Allen Woody. Wyman used a short scale semi acoustic, with a big body and humbuckers, like his famous Framus, in the early years. I think this is the best choice because is easy to find it and you can balance the pickups -Vox VX50 BA. This amp is the most affordable Vox bass amp to emulate the classic tone of the Stones. Because of the semi acoustic bass, you should set the amp with more treble than mids -Pick ·Darryl Jones (the actual unofficial bassist) -Squier VM Jazz Bass 70s. Darryls plays with Lackland jazz basses with maple neck. He's got a signature model but it would be for a BY busting the bank. -Ampeg BA 110 V2. He uses Ampeg with the Rolling Stones -Fingers ·Charlie Watts -He's been playing on Gretsch drums for many years, using a jazz kit. Of course Gretsch Catalina studio (20x14 bass drum, 14x14 floor tom, 12x8 rack tom, 14x5 snare) on mahogany. Meinl cymabls give a warm and pretty sound

If you want a cranked amp sound at lower volume, get a low Watt amp (perhaps one with a switch that allows you to switch to an even lower Watt setting) and crank it. It isn’t unheard of for Squier to make Teles with a PAF-style humbucker in the neck rather than a wide-range. I have one! Maybe they don’t have one in the line-up at the moment, though.

I'm always fascinated watching these videos because some artists you buy the gear and you sound like them immediately, whereas other guitarists you can even buy all the identical gear and still not sound like them. Obviously they don't have the Stones actual gear here but I'd be really interested to see them do a 'BY Busting the Bank' video for the Stones because I still think they wouldn't sound super close.

Yeah, it's basically an Ampeg VT-40 in a pedal, which is what the Stones were using in the late 60s and a lot of the 70s and what Josh Homme has used since he was 15. Josh may have modded some of his for different breakup.

Yeah, that low D ringing on the bottom of Open G tuning kind of spoils the sound - why Keith Richards did completely away with the sixth string altogether! Not so easy for the rest of us with only one or maybe two guitars total, but where there is a will there IS a way. The spirit of Keith's playing is PRICELESS!!

I don't know the quality of it, but Anderton's stocks a power attenuator. Instead of buying the pedals, they could have gone with the attenuator, ran it between the output on the back of the Fender Deluxe Reverb and the speaker, soaked the power/volume, and cranked it to 11 without blowing up eardrums. www.andertons.co.uk/p/PDI06-8/audio-solutions/palmer-pdi06-power-attenuator-8-ohm-version

good job guys, as you said a more difficult sound to replicate then people think. I have an American Tele that only had the low E for about 6 months and is permanently tuned Open G. If you put that through a Fender Blues Deluxe with the overdrive at about 3-4 you'll get close to the sound. (Blues Deluxe don't have a great overdrive channel but it works for The Stones) For satisfaction I think it was originally recorded on an Epiphone Casino so the P90's give that slightly fatter tone. Anyway good job.

Thank you Matt and Rabea! I hope you both realize that one of the best part of these videos is not always what gear to get, but the nuances you both spell out to GET those sounds. I would have totally written off the less expensive guitars as not being able to do The Stones justice, but you flat out nailed it by spelling it out about the amps AND showing how some pedals would help get the cranked up Amp sounds, even when the Stones themselves don't use any pedals at all. This is GOLD for those of us "Bedroom Stones" players. PLEASE at some point do this for Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. They have such fantastic tones, but it seems impossible to get close to those sounds, probably for the same reason as the Stones. They probably crank their amps up and have shields in front of the speakers so they don't go deaf. I would love to see what you would chose to use for gear...AND what flavors you add to push it all into the "Sounds Like" area. Cheers!

Dookie era Green Day please! It might prove quite challenging, due to Billie using a modded Marshall amp back in those days, plus he played with an angled humbucker, similarly angled like an sss bridge pickup. Keith actually used an old danelectro that someone had left at his house to record Gimme Shelter. Apparently the guitar was in such bad shape that the neck broke off as he played the last note. Again, this comes from Keith who is known for telling fibs (probably unintentionally), so who knows.

The Fender Princetons are part of the "Tweed" family of amps, and the newer Princeton reissues do have the tweed cover. sooo... just cause that particular modern reissue has the shiny cloth cover they used on the Twins doesn't change the character of the amp.

MickeyKraut419 actually, it is an entirely different circuit and sound, the silverface fender Princeton reverb as opposed to the 50s style tweed princeton
@jakestewartmusic
@jakestewartmusic 6 лет назад
They made tweed Princetons, brownface Princetons, blackface Princetons, and silverface Princetons. All of those different iterations of the Princeton sounded different. The newer Princeton reissues are either based on the '65 blackface or like a '68 silverface with a "bassman" preamp channel and a Celestion speaker upgrade. Fender does not have a reissue tweed Princeton

I have a Princeton 65 amp..... I got it for ~150USD because it has a weird discoloration on the cloth cover over the speaker. Other than that it's perfect. And for a guy who does 99.98% of my playing at home just sitting around its perfect

Did you guys leave the compressor on when the fuzz was on? I think that little chirp in the beginning you're talking about might be the comp catching the leading edge. If you run just the fuzz w/o compressor it might get you there, but like you said then you're losing the break-up sound going into the amp

You guys have GOT to do a John Sykes segment - the recorded guitars from the Whitesnake 1987 album are - and I will take no argument on this - quite simply the best metal tones that have ever been committed to tape 😀

Fulltone '69 is the best germanium fuzz out there imo. Don't weep for not having the EH. This was a step up imho. But you missed a budget item for true Keef tone... a dime bag and a 5th of whiskey... ;) Love that Tele. I have the Mexi '72 Custom classic version, a step up from the Squier, but the Squier does the job nicely here. I am weird with Teles, love the bridge pickup, but never met a traditional Tele neck pickup I liked... the '72 with neck humbucker and Les Paul controls makes it the Tele for _ME_... No other Tele model does it for me like the '72 Customs. The guitar is more accurate than you think, Keef played a '72 Custom for a lot of years... it's not Micawber, but a Black 70s custom was his main guitar from 70s into 80s.
