For any of you worried about the hemi tick, they all do it and it's not going to hurt anything as long as the oil is kept changed. Don't try putting in a different weight of oil or anything as it won't really help. I own a farm and we have a dozen bighorn 1500 rams with the 5.7 and they all tick at idle. One has over 300,000 farm miles on it with lots of idling (over 15,000 hours). Sometimes the manifolds snap the bolts and occasionally a water pump leaks but otherwise these are great trucks. Several of my mechanics have reiterated over and over that this is normal for these engines and it isn't bad, we even ripped the cam and lifters out of the 300,000 mile hemi just to inspect them. They all looked fine. The issues start happening with these engines when the oil is allowed to sludge up, then the small passageways for the lifters get clogged and then the lifters become a time bom. In some cases the cam can even get screwed up. Just ignore the oil life meter and change the oil out with full synthetic 5w20 every 3000 miles or 1 year if you idle it for a long time or do a lot of towing and every 5,000 miles or 1 year if you just drive normally. Change the trans fluid in the 8 speed every 50-60k miles. You do have to drop the pan but it's worth it.

Thank you for the advice. I have been saving up and just bought a 2019 limited 40,000 miles with E torque It s so quiet and yet powerful. I bought it for comfort and to tow my Jayco Jay feather 24 ft travel trailer which maxes at 6,500 lbs. Only for weekend and short breaks in Southern California. I was told to make sure I run it on medium grade or above gasoline. Despite the crazy pump prices.

Hey what oil are you using? And do you disable MDS while driving using the gear shift buttons? I read the forums and they are all over the map with oil type and viscosity. My 2018 1500 love the truck has 71k miles and bought it used with 68k miles. I changed the oil when I first got it to Mobil 1 5W20 with a M1 extended filter. Did it again at the 3k mile mark and noticed my oil pressure at fully warm temp went from 29-31 psi to 30-33 psi but it seems like I'm noticing the lifters more and an occasional lifter tick but it sounds pretty much like yours. Some people say M1, others say Pennzoil or Redline. I just want the best oil and filter. I run 89 octane as well.

This is good to hear!! I just finished replacing my exhaust manifolds and after firing it up, it was quieter but I noticed this exact same sound. I was going to scan it tomorrow for cylinder balancing, I still might. But this sounds reassuring. Thanks!!
@BobertDoodle
@BobertDoodle 7 месяцев назад
You are gonna have problems if you run 89 octane, just use regular, it's what it is designed to run, you and run 89 and 91 every now and then(rarely) just to clean out the carbon a bit but the compression is designed for regular gas @@craig5224

I seriously appreciate you uploading this. I have a Ram with the 5.7 and I was dreading that it may be suffering from that notorious Hemi tick. The sounds I have are pretty much identical to yours which as you mentioned, are normal sounds of operation. I'm glad mine is still running strong at approximately 240,000 miles. I do have a slight rough idle though which I need to get checked. Again, thanks a lot brother. This has helped so much.

Thanks for this! Mine sounds just like this and I was worried I had the tick. Honestly I think people blow this out of proportion. This is just an inherently loud motor.
@shoveI
@shoveI 3 года назад
You're right it's just loud... the engine driven fan is great for moving huge amounts of air when towing up a mountain but it's not a whisper! The injectors sound like they got subwoofers and Dolby sound on them... then there's just normal valve noise even under perfect conditions it's a lot of moving parts... all that adds up!

A handy video. Just finished doing a top end rebuild, I had a collapsed lifter and a wiped out lobe, causing a cylinder to be unable to fire. Naturally, I took around a month to finish the rebuild(snails pace), and I forgot what it used to sound like, and I was concerned my Chinese cam and lifters didn't last more than 10kms lol. Truthfully, with proper maintenance, these trucks will hold up well. I have installed a high volume oil pump which helps keep the oil at a high pressure & volume even at idle, which hopefully allows me to be a bit sloppy with my oil change timing.

Love this. I just bought a brand new ram and swore I was hearing the “tick” everyone was talking about, but with only 500 miles on it I could only assume people were being a bit paranoid. Mine sounds exactly like this, and i came from a Silverado where the “chevy tick” is infamous as well 😂

Appreciate the video, the tinking noises scared me when i first heard them at idle, i thought it was the beginning of lifter tick. I gotta 16' 1500 with 82,000 miles. Only problem i have is vibration/shaking at highway speeds, probably just tire balance or alignment but i love this truck!

I will say, that after playing around with two wires, a little 9v battery, and one of the fuel injectors on a hemi in shop today, some of the ticking is indeed from those loud ass fuel injectors

I had the ping pong ball sound at 47000 miles. Almost like a knock under driver side valve cover. I will not own a truck with only 47000 miles and already making knocking sounds. Plus I would have to look forward to the manifold bolts breaking. Plus the dealer ship here is terrible. Wasn’t gonna wait for cam to go so did the next best thing and got rid of it for a Tundra with life time power train warranty. Good luck dodge owners. Wish you all well.

I just bought an ‘18 ram 1500 with 134k miles. Scariest purchase I’ve ever made. I hope this truck will last me considering what I will pay monthly on it now. Ugh so stressful. I know mechanics pretty well so I will be on top of all the proper maintenance but still
@shoveI
@shoveI 10 месяцев назад
They're not fragile trucks, just pretty often people either neglect them to death or do a bunch of insufficiently thought out modifications. Keep in mind the company that engineered your transmission recommends fluid and filter every 50k miles (80k km) so the lifetime recommendation from Ram is a bit of a disservice. I know what kind of interval I'd be keeping :)

Mine sounds pretty much the same as yours but there is a very slight knocking sound to it when I listen from under the front tire wall. what is that high pitched noise at 3:17 its sort of a warbling whistle/whine. Mine makes that noise and even after an upgraded cam and headers it still makes that noise (maybe even louder now). I noticed that some hemis make this noise on youtube as well and then there are those that dont whatsoever
@shoveI
@shoveI Месяц назад
I can't be sure of exactly what part you're picking out at that time, admittedly it's very loud in that scene due to using a sensitive condenser microphone in close proximity. I am hearing induction noise from the throttle body (which I suspect might be what you're asking about) , some belt and bearing noise from the belt driven accessories + the timing assembly (continuous pink noise), some fan noise (the engine driven fan clutch isn't engaged but the fan still spins and makes noise as the tips of the blades move past the radiator's vanes - whooshing noise) valve and rocker noise (midrange rumble), injector noise (high speed clicking "sewing machine nose" mostly) and then the low frequency pulsing which is mostly induction and exhaust sound from both open ends of the system (the fender where the intake draws from and the tailpipe at the back of the truck)
@Muntster32
@Muntster32 Месяц назад
@@shoveIyeah it’s probably the induction noise. It oscillates with the engine
@Muntster32
@Muntster32 Месяц назад
@@shoveI Took off the belt and it still makes that noise. Its coming from the black box on the intake manifold where the oil fill is and the crankcase vent hose.

Mine has 123k, smoothest thing I've driven, but I have a variant rhythm tap (meaning not constantly spaced noise, there's different tones and volumes with each tap) under the truck I don't remember having- but it sounds like this has a very very faint one too (or I'm going crazy) so I guess it's normal? My manifolds and injectors are new.

I have the same thing and it goes away when the engine is hot huh?
@SketchDragon
@SketchDragon 2 года назад
@@stevedelaney8214 yea the tapping is only on a cold start, but after 4 months of that, now there's a real faint, hollow knocking of metal on metal. Both are only in idle. Loudest behind front tires. Temp now tends to get warmer than usual when driving slow too, and acceleration/shifts are sometimes sluggish.

@SketchDragon
@SketchDragon 2 года назад
@@stevedelaney8214 I took mine to dodge soon after hearing the first type of tap and they said exhaust leak lmao. It's hard because the symptoms don't fit exactly into one typical answer of lifters, valves or piston slap etc, and the sound has to echo right to be reproduced.

@@SketchDragon these 5.7 hemi’s are so touchy you know. I love being able to say I have a hemi but they really are a pain in the ass…Well dude, I’ll let you know what dodge says with mine. It seems to knock really loud after I get on the pedal real good. So ima hit it hard just before I drop it off. Oh and mine only has 91,000 miles on but I found a 3rd party extended warranty place to warranty me for 75,000 more miles for $100 a month. So if it shits out I get a new motor.

I don't have a favorite brand - local to me I usually stop at a Chevron & a Safeway station out of convenience. 91 octane because I noticed when I lived in Phoenix (first 5 years owning it, elevation about 1200ft) if I put 91 in it felt more responsive so I just stuck with that. The few times I've put 87 octane in it on road trips it seemed to run fine and I have not bothered to do any detailed comparisons on MPG. I even put 85 in it when I visited Utah years ago and noticed no change in behavior at that elevation.

My 2019 ram 1500 bighorn is making a whining kinda noise while accelerating from low speed and while breaking once it gets to a low speed its hard to describe and its faint but not knowing what it is is bothering me. The bast way i can describe is it sounds like a buzz
@shoveI
@shoveI 2 года назад
If you have the off road package, some people have complained that the skidplate under the power steering rack can transmit vibrations - mine never has. You can take it off and see if the buzz goes away, then if it does go away get some rubber washers to isolate it a little when you reinstall it. Washers go between the skidplate and the frame (or even better if you double isolate, like frame|rubber washer|skid plate|rubber washer|steel washer|bolt) Also if you have auto-4wd (four position 4wd selector) and the front C.A.D. is malfunctioning in 2wd you can get a buzz up front..
