This is Lizzard's brother, who still has no name. Do you have a good name for him? We are open to suggestions! This is what a happy male muscovy duck sounds like when he is talking to you.
I'm relieved I'm not the only one with a male muscovy duck that shows their love by biting lol😭😭. I have a 11 year old big dude and he has always been very close to me but still bites me on any given chance lmao
Yeah, I have two one female and one male. The male I raised since he was a baby and he shows his love too his girlfriend by nibbling her gently it’s really cute ☺️.
I’m in Florida, and I feed them EVERYDAY! ( the mother even trusts me with her babies! ) It’s my way of Decompressing. So cute and friendly to me. PS they LOVE PEANUTS!
I'm sorry. Oh wth. Ducks can get cancer? 12?? The only way for my ducks to live that long is to wait for my stepdad's dogs to die. My stepdad's stupid dogs killed my two mallard ducks. I knew that they'd eventually kill them. They'd get close. Even if they were trained, dogs still have instincts to kill any bird. My neighbor trained all of her dogs. One of her dogs stopped and let me grab my hen. She got in their backyard. I don't like taking the birds out. They go in all directions. The coup is long. My stepdad's fault too. I warned him to secure the dog area. They got out and it was too late. My ears mf suck and I guess I need hearing aids. I didn't hear them. And I constantly check on the birds. Him, my mom and brother found them. One died instantly but I heard him quack one last time and the other died that night or early in the morning. I assume the one that died instantly was bitten on the chest and bled. The other was bit on the neck. He was limping, trembling and couldn't stand up for a long time. The other one Idk. I thought she died too but she ran to the river. She escaped death. Months later, maybe something bit her or she got sick. She was hot, trembling, breathing heavy and layed down for a long time. It was dark and I tried to put her in. She quacked loud like she was in pain. She had convulsions I guess and she rolled her neck back. Then she sat and nibbled my leg like this duck. But directly on my skin. She died in front of me. She was a pekin. The others were male mallard ducks. The males were brothers. I had three more ducks and they died. She died in august and they died in june. I miss them so much. My stepdad got three muscovy ducks because I was upset. Idiot showed the older ducks to the dogs. I don't take them out anymore. They seem to like the coup. He moved the dogs downstairs. I really hate them and I can't wait until they die. Then they can't harm my ducks, hens or turkey. One recently took feathers off of a hen. I warn my stepdad and he doesn't listen. He's stupid. I want the ducks to live at least four years like the old ones. They were turning five in may. They escaped death multiple times. Dogs aren't the only predators. Also I have to care for the dogs. It's painful to look at them and get reminded that they killed my ducks. They also nearly killed my turkey. I hate taking her out even though she needs freedom. She either vanishes and almost goes to the forest or gets close to the dogs. I lost a lot of animals btw. It's hard to bond with muscovy ducks. But today, the female nibbled my hand. I'm ready to taste her eggs. The new ducks are seven months old. 🥺
Is this the sound of a happy duck? When I give them food the girls make the “pewww pewww pwwww” happy noise but when the male sees me he does this. Not sure what it means and I want to know if he wants to kill me
Yes. Muskovy (pardon me, if I write it wrong, in my home country, they're called 'mute ducks', given they're not very talkative) and other ducks, for the males, they squack, a raspier sound. Female ducks quack loudly. But yes, this Muskovy drake is very happy. Just look how he wags his tail, ducks do that when they're happy.
I've raised about 47 different Muscovies. Yes, it can seem scary. But, some neat facts in fact might make them seem less scary or ugly. 1) Muscovies don't share the Mallard as their ancestor. They're the only duck species to not be of that family. Their ancestor is the "Greater Wood Ducks" Which is why they have those sharp talons. They purch onto trees high as 20+ft to nest from predators that could get them. 2) Muscovies do not quack, they hiss, and pip. These are sounds that shouldn't be feared, most of them are friendly and that's just how evolution breed and made Muscovies, well, Muscovies. Their sounds are interesting because you can't hear it from any other duck. (Well, hissing maybe from a goose). But, they enjoy humans (Who have raised them) and are very chatty with their loving owners. Think of like a dog. 3) They do have different names. Muscovies have different names from all around, in Mexico (one of their many native homes) they're known as "quiet ducks". because most Muscovies are silent. In USA, some people call them "Puppy ducks",and "Dragon Ducks". 4) They come in many beautiful colors. (Domestic Muscovies) come in many different colors. These colors can range from; Chocolate, Pecan, all white, all black, black and brown, black with green tint wings, white and brown, gray, gray and black, and more. The colors are very wonderful to look at, gives your duck farm a colorful experience 😀 5) They wag their tails, Bob their heads, and hiss. Muscovies wag their tails as communication ways. When they wag and hiss, they're just chatting, the bobbing head is only a talking sign, or expressing themselves. They also can wag their tail as a way for greeting their owners in joy and excitement. Some Muscovies even ran up to me and hug me in their own way. 6) The red wart mask on their face, isn't just for genetics. The mask on their face isn't just for their DNA, it's meant for protection in fact. Muscovies aren't labeled as "water birds" but rather "perch birds", water birds bodies are build uniquely to match with the water environment and to grub in the dirt that is in of the water. But Muscovies grub in the muck when it rains, the mask on their face protects them from anything that may be sharp to cut them, but it also acts as a water repellent since they cannot oil their face, their mask is naturally one. It's also a mating thing, brighter masks on the Muscovies only mean the better chance of mating. 7) They have different personalities. What is different from Muscovies and other species, is that every muscovy isn't "default emotion" so they don't follow the same general rules of their ancestor behavior. For example. My two female Muscovies, Princess a full black Muscovy, and Sweetie, a white muscovy. Both, super nice, Sweetie when she had her first clutch, she was more mellow on me and my family petting them, she rarely got aggressive. However, Princess was very protective, she even took her babies away from us until a family member helped Princess and she allowed them to finally hold her babies. it's a very nice thing to witness, since most don't expect a duck to have different emotions. 8) Muscovies only bite aggressively if someone in their pack gets out of line. Muscovies have a ranking system, both with males and females, they typically do not bite for no reason at their owners (Unless their owner is a piece of crap), but normally if a muscovy tried to challenge the alpha, then retaliation will happen. Overall, they're very friendly. Or they're just going through some hormones and teen phases. (For the young drakes) 9) Muscovies are intelligent. Muscovies are a smart species of ducks, they can communicate with each other and form strong bonds with their owners and others. But, you can definitely have a smart duck. When I had Oscar, my hand raised duck. He would talk to me when I called his name, I let him bond with me and he even slept with me, just on my pillow. But, he saw me as a part of his flock, for when my family members came back, one checked on me, and according to them, Oscar rose his head up, raised his mohawk and hissed. He never intended on harming, but he was very smart to wake up and immediately take guard. Muscovies are intelligent enough to understand human body language even (To an extent, but also my own personal experience). 10) They're your pests enemy. If you have a garden, Muscovies are your friend. They eat all sorts of grubs and even will eat weeds at time to help you in the summer. They're quiet, patient, but protective of their kin and home. Thankfully they're not territorial. The males will fight during mating season, but again, that's normal. If things do get bad, best if you do split the fight. But other than that, those are some facts about Muscovies. Either it helps or not, I hope this does inform you nicely on that Muscovies aren't always bad, that goes for any animal, but, I Definitely recommend researching them cause they are a wonderful duck. ☺️
