Naledi Matshega is a professional ululator in Botswana, hired to celebrate weddings and other ceremonies.
The high-pitched sound of an ululator echoes across the plains of rural Botswana when Naledi Matshega is at work. When this professional ululator is hired, she puts on her shawl and heads to local ceremonies, where her distinctive sound rings out at key moments of celebration. Matshega explains her gift and how she came to practice her craft, and we see her at work at a days-long traditional wedding.
Karin Slater is an experienced South African director and cinematographer. The recipient of many awards, including at MIPDOC and the Innovative Film Festival in Switzerland, she is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (which presents the Oscars awards) and has had films showcased at Sundance, Berlinale and MoMA.

In OShiwambo culture of Namibia, we ullulate during all happy events. However, everyone is able to do it. Of course some like my mother who brought me up, just like the beautiful lady here, are very very talented then others, so when they do it, everyone is kind of in awe of their almost perfect and distinctive ululating sound. For us however, the tongue does not hit on the horizontal corners of the mouth as is the case here, it hits the upper part of the mouth just after the teeth. It's always so good to see our African traditions similarities. Keep ululating our beautiful based :) .

In my 72 years I have never heard of ululator, so I looked it up: Ululation, trilling or lele, is a long, wavering, high-pitched vocal sound resembling a howl with a trilling quality. It is produced by emitting a high-pitched loud voice accompanied with a rapid back and forth movement of the tongue and the uvula. You learn something every day. الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِين
