Cinema is an art of sound and vision, but it’s the rare film that explores both with equal vitality. In a remarkably assured feature debut, Darius Marder finds a cinematic language that’s perfectly matched to this story of a man fighting to hold on to what defines him.
Riz Ahmed is a noise metal drummer. Shirtless and full of coiled intensity, he hammers out ferocious sets with his girlfriend and bandmate (Olivia Cooke). But with each show, a persistent ringing in his ears worsens until sound drops out altogether. For a deaf musician and his partner who’ve built their precarious existence doing what they know and love, what happens now? If he can’t recover his hearing, who will he become?
Marder, who co-wrote the screenplay for Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines (TIFF ’12), begins in similar territory here - characters living by their own rules. But this film moves in new directions, and according to its own beat. As this drummer explores medical interventions to restore his hearing and begins to learn about both the experience and the culture of deafness, he confronts the gap between external sounds and that tinny inner noise he can’t shake: the sound of metal. Marder and his team do groundbreaking work to convey that subjective sonic experience, while Ahmed is simply brilliant and fully immersed in his character. As the story takes one surprising turn and then another, it builds to a journey that looks - and sounds - like life.
“A picture which uses the medium of cinema to its fullest extent, both visually and aurally” -Wendy Ide, Screen Daily

A movie of pure magic. So much wisdom and spirituality in this movie. Be still. Be vulnerable. Let go of control. Accept life. ♡

I watched this movie last night by myself and just about had a panic attack along with “Ruben”. I showed the trailer to my husband today and he could not even watch all of it. We have struggled with my husband’s severe hearing loss for many years. We do ok on a day to day basis with phones that type out messages, keeping a certain amount of quietness in our home and not exposing ourselves to an overly amount of noisy places and big crowds. The culture today is loudness everywhere. Restaurants are loud by nature with all hard surfaces. Even homes are being designed with all hard surfaces. I worry about our young people who expose themselves to really loud concerts and earbud music all day every day. We are at the tip of the iceberg on hearing loss.

You are quite right, the children with their straight piping of noise into their ear canals at incredibly high levels will cause an epidemic of deafness, which the causative tech will then happily charge huge $ to partially remedy.

When we are passionately in love with something and we suddenly lose a tool without which you cannot pursue your passion then your world goes upside down within few moments and our mentality cannot adopt to that sudden rapid descent movement in our life.. During this course of time we lose few more important things due to that loss of tool.. This film exactly captures that particular losing phase of life and it justifies it so well by its execution.. Sound is one of the important things in this film, if they had done even a little mistake this wouldn't have created an impact like it did... The kind of subjective experience this film gives us is very rare in today's movies.. suddenly it goes to a wide shot and gives us the objective experience through the sound which i think is impeccable and it's wonderful to see a debutant director making a movie like this.. I love the very first scene, it starts with some brilliant sound and lighting and it sets up the tone of the movie very well..I liked how he tries to understand the new self but how he also can't live with what he is missing..Generally we expect the dialogues to fill the gaps in between the silences in a story like this but it has brought more impact on the movie, it makes the silence more terrifying and emotional..Riz Ahmed's every minute detail in his performance moves us closer to his psyche..though Olivia cookie is there for a short amount of time there are moments where her subtle expressions speak soooo much to Riz Ahmed's character.. Physical problems are often looked up as just "physical problems" but it is as mental as it is physical..the problem becomes bigger when the person in pain or the people around can't understand how to deal with it and it's hard to accept it or make it a part of our lives but if we won't do that, it will destroy us mentally too..this movie shows this feeling in a tremendous way

SOUND OF METAL Trailer | TIFF 2020 0231am 8.1.24 who was made to feel uncomfortable watching this film? ..........ummmmmm.... there's not really much to feel uncomfortable about. other than to, kindda, sympathize with the guy stuck in some damnable community with folk who can't really grasp why he doesn't want to be amongst the deaf people. if you have had to suffer spite and ire of the deaf community you maybe might comprehend why he didnt want to be amongst them. i got the impression the two musicians were deaf people, anyway, trynna keep it real? .................................................................................................. as for music being the be-all and end-all. yeah, i suppose. on that level it's of interest. other than that it's a testament to a closed shop. i felt the film walker dealt with deafness in a far more realistic manner. go watch that movie. it's far superior.

SOUND OF METAL Trailer | TIFF 2020 0237am 8.1.24 ummmmmmmm... for some reason i thought this was an antipodean production. Americans would have made far more schmaltz than was necessary if it had been a yank film... was this an Australian movie? only asking... refer to mel gibson's initial cinematic outing: tim.
