I hope you all remember this bus from the 90s, it's the TTC New Flyer D40-90!
The Commission had awarded a $17.2 million contract to New Flyer Industries for the supply of 79 diesel buses to be delivered in 1990. These were also the first buses for the conventional fleet came with air conditioning and were exactly identical to the previous orders with small differences, they were similar looking on the exterior except the rear portion. They were delivered in the "CLRV" livery used from the 1980s into the 1990s and the first buses to be delivered with electronic Luminator destination signs as well as the first Cummins diesel engines in the conventional fleet. They were delivered alongside 6640-6745 and 9370-9394.
This series of buses have a different interior scheme with the seating arrangement altered. Similar to the past orders, they had standard cream and brown colour scheme on the inside and was configured for 40 passengers using the Otaco Model 6468 passenger seats that has padded brown vinyl seat inserts. Additional features that also came were the ZF 4HP500 4 speed transmission and the kneeling capability that allows the elderly to board the buses as indicated by the "Easier Access" sticker.
These buses have received a 6-year rebuild between 1997 through 2001 with the seats replaced with unpadded red fabric from Holdsworth. The ZF 4HP500 were also been replaced by Allison V730 transmissions after they were proved to be unreliable with components failing in under six months.
Sadly, these buses retired in between September 2001 and June 2004 due to mechanical and corrosion problems (as always). They're replaced by 220 low floor buses from Orion (which is Orion VII EGR).
May these buses RIP :'(
Engine: Cummins LTA10B 240 hp
Transmission: Allison V730 3 speed (previously have ZF 4HP500 4 speed)
Note: These buses are different than the New Flyers D40-87, 88, and 89 because it has no rear window. Also, this audio is not mine, it's from this website here that recorded by Allen Dicion (I think): www.transithub....

Can’t believe GM Fishbowl outlived everything. I guess they were easier to maintain than newer busses which had AC and other extra tech things to go wrong.

The D40-90 had a different engine, probably to account for the AC unit that would sap some performance

The 6V-71 may have been a workhorse, but the agencies know they have only so long before they would need a much more powerful engine. The subsequent 1991-92 Orion V diesels (6640-6745) used the 6V-92TA engine; these were the only new TTC buses to do so. They originally used ZF ECOMAT transmissions, but were changed to Allison B400Rs after logging around 250,000 miles.

Their D40 cousins from MARTA had the L10 and Voith combo and the D35s had the L10 and ZF combo.

@@stinkyroadhog1347 true that I think if the buses didn't have catastrophic mechanical failures they would've done frame work on these buses

How about an OC Transpo bus next? There is plenty to choose from in the sound files.

Probably should've went with the 6v92 repower since the v730 lack the retarder
@ClassicTVMan1981X

They did consider going with the VR-731 initially, but decided to take the cheap route and use the surplus V-730s from the retired 1977-80 GM New Looks. The Voith D863.2-ADR (W7) was out of the question, because I read somewhere that Voith and its authorized dealers would only allow complete powertrains (both engine+transmission) for replacement, not just a transmission replacement alone, because of the stipulations in Voith's warranty program.
@maddmaxx14
@maddmaxx14 10 месяцев назад
@@ClassicTVMan1981X could be the way the transmission retrofits with the engine design. A full repower would've worked way better for these buses the 92 series is more powerful than the l10ta in these buses plus they're more compatible with the v730 series would've been more cost effective and wouldn't have lost these buses as quickly
@ClassicTVMan1981X
@ClassicTVMan1981X 9 месяцев назад
@@maddmaxx14 Specifically, this was what I was told about the L10/Voith retrofits... While they are well made, Voith is very clear in their warranty terms that they will only accept complete units for rebuilding themselves, or by a warranty approved 3rd party. Voith will not even normally sell you internal components unless through those channels. In a nutshell, voith is much stricter who it lets open up their product. Allison, and historically ZF, will honour transmissions rebuilt by customers, provided the technicians have been trained in certain proprietary seminars. One exception to this is the rebuilding or ZF drop box rear axles, used on Orion 6s, van hools, and nova lfses. In Ontario, they are normally overhauled as a complete unit by Tarten equipment.

@@ClassicTVMan1981X ohhh I never new that about voith. I also heard that voith transmissions are the most expensive
