i live in Chicago and was trying to rally and go to the detroit show, to no avail. I woke to a text from a friend at 5:30 informing me of the devestating news. Anyone that knows me, can attest to my love for this band, starting a lil late...1990. I know how this sounds, but it took me almost 2 years to shake off Chris' tragedy. I'm not what one may call an obsessive, over reactin' drama queen. I just shared a lot of the same difficulties and I'm not much younger than Chris. When I was able to focus on the severity and relate....well I suppose it woke a part of me. I guess I can be grateful in a way. Still...It's difficult and hard for me at times...Anyway..this band made me a far better musician and I'm still learning. Much Love. Chris Cashin

i have to leave a comment as I went thru the same and RIGHT now in 2024 im still absolutely heartbroken but was feeling a lot worse when this tragedy happened, maybe the biggest tragedy of all time in music history kings are gine forgotten, but fr me Chris walked on water the jesus christ of music and MY King

And to think that with all of that honor it still wasn't enough to give him the will to press on. That is a real indictment of the false values of our age. Sickness. Kurt Cobain is another example of this lesson. So many of my music heroes have lived this out in real time for me not to notice it as a truth. God bless them all, and keep them; I hope that they are finally free from the pain that tormented them.

Haha, me too, I am listening to this now because me at 19 years old listened to this every day but I can't sing along at all like I can with other albums like Ride the Lightning, Bleach, etc. I saw SG in 1990 at a small club and then Badmotorfinger came out and I didn't like it so much.

I remember being 18 years old and moving to Port Orchard, Washington. There was a record store/guitar shop down the road. They had this cassette for sale there. I bought it. I thought, what hell is this. I loved it but at in the same breath, I kinda of hated it. Not the mix, it sucked but the band. I was jealous because this to me was the music I had imagine making with a band. I remember sitting in my room, my white Les Paul Custom Lite and Marshall amp just trying to learn this album. Moving there was the best time of my life. I was able to see and meet Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. The big 3 from that time. I was able to meet some other great bands at that time but those three like most of us at that age, was the shit! To me though, it was Soundgarden that shaped me as a musician. Meeting Chris many years later again when he was a solo artist was fantastic. He actually remembered me and allowed us to stay on the side stage while the rest of the people were asked to leave. I still still remember him pointing at their security and saying, not him. Meeting him again a couple years later was just as cool. Was backstage again doing my PR work and I saw him about 10 feet away. It was a quick glance but he pointed and asked, you are staying for the show? I said, of course. He said, make sure you do and gave me a smile. Lol, as if I a was just there to visit but not watch the show. Lol. We talked a little after the remarkable show. I will say that many may disagree but Chris seemed happy and he seemed on top of his game with his solo band. They always nailed a great show. It was the best of Cornell from all his bands and solo work. It awesome. I am still devastated that he is no longer with us. It doesn't seem right at all. Yes, we have the music but we don't have him on earth anymore. He was always so kind and gracious. He is missed. He was and will always be a legend. RIP Chris and thank you.

That's a great story and glad you had the opportunity to meet him. I say this with humor, but Chris sensed your aura and new how much you were inspired by his music. Thats why he let you stay by the stage and "told everybody else take a hike"! (Not literally, but figuratively). He knew you would take the experience of meeting him and turn your music into something special. That's why he let you hang around. I'm happy for you! 💗💗

With these guys since "Deep Six", and they definitely have rearranged my DNA in ways wonderful and strange. To say they have their own sound is an understatement that rivals I think Die Trumpster might be a tad cuckoo. Metal without being metallic, and hardcore as all get out, these guys owe me some socks 'cause mine have been rocked off.

SoundGarden is one of those bands that with RARELY exceptions ALL the members are top level musicians, just like the Beatles or PinkFloyd, where all the members were talented and multifaceted. The bassist (Ben Shepherd) is a monster, the drummer (Matt Cameron) is a killer, the guitarist (Kim Thayil) is breathtaking in the tuning and complexity of the riffs, and Cornell sings like a God of Olympus, as well as playing very well, it's a band that has everything in terms of music, composition, chords, sonority, it's like a classical music show where the Maestro is rock n roll.

This is the equivalent of the remix Brendan O'Brien did for "Ten". Just bare bones, in your face, bereft of reverb, like it was always meant to be.

Thanks! This album connects with me on the emotional level somehow better than their subsequent albums, that connect better on the intellectual level.

I was stationed in Kitsap County in the Navy, circa 1991-1993. Soundgarden was a major part of my music collection at that time. Brings back memories of sailing out the San Juan de Fuca.

That the original release of Beyond the Wheel sounds better than the reissue (unlike every other song on the album) and the Early Version sounds better than both other versions is proof of just how fuckin' raw that song is. The messier the better.
