How to soundproof a ceiling from structural noise is much better than soundproofing a ceiling from airborne noise. There are ways to sound proof your ceiling the right way and the wrong way. In this video I will show you how you can have your ceiling soundproofing project a success.
Just adding mass on the ceiling will not get rid of foot steps and stomping noise you will need to decouple the ceiling from the joist using resilient channel to have the sound decimate in the studs without reaching the ceiling!

Thank you, great advice! Might want to mention flanking as well when talking about impact noises as well as a couple things people can do to contest these issues. Firstly use a calibrated mic to take measurements of the noise. Building codes always include IIC ratings for multi dwelling constructions. A FIIC test can be conducted to see if the structure meets code or not. What is unfortunate is often the HOA or administration are ignorant of these issues and the details around them. Complaints of footfall noise are often ignored or seen as not important. Its important when I measure 70-90db @ 40HZ!! That's loud! Big old boom boom like a sub was installed in my ceiling.

In my apartment I live on the bottom floor on the 3rd floor is young 3 college students upstairs stomping around I can hear loud foot stomping all the way into my apartment down here, the impact footsteps comes through the walls upstairs to my wall. I can hear foot stomping above it's not my 2nd story neighbors.

Omg we live in the 2nd floor too and the 3rd floor neighbor is so effin noisy with theit footsteps, stomping noise. Its hard on the head and giving me a headache, such a disturbance and they have no freakin discipline. And they just moved in but a nightmare. 🥺 Weve been here for 13 years and right now my husband and I and my furchildren are contemplating finding another place. Our only hope now is to find a place in the same area (cause we love the area and near our workplace) I hope God grant our desires🥺🙏

Thank you for explaining what would work with impact vs sound! Question: if I were to only impact-noise proof my bedroom (over upstairs entrance & living room), would that be sufficient? Or would it not make a difference because the rest of the condo isn’t impact-noise proofed?

I second the two layers of drywall. I've always done insulation with decent success but thought I'd give the two layers a shot. I feel it does close to ZERO help when it comes to impacts. I'm glad the home owner had me do it. Cuz I would have felt bad selling them that option.
@piggly-wiggly

Thanks for going over the different strategies for airborne vs impact noise. I think a good way to organize ceiling soundproofing is also by whether you can rip out the ceiling or not. It would be weird, I think, to rip out the ceiling but not put in soundproofing insulation. Similarly, it would be weird to rip out the ceiling but not use a resilient channel for the new drywall (if you can afford it). What's the added cost of a resilient channel if you've pulled down the ceiling? What's the added cost of adding soundproofing insulation if you've pulled down the ceiling? On the other hand, if you've added an extra layer of drywall because you didn't think you could afford pulling down a ceiling, how happy are you going to be? Are you going to wind up pulling down the ceiling anyway because it didn't do much?

It should be against the law to not have apts and condos soundproof. It's absolutely terrible how much noise you have to endure when living under Inconsiderate, Lowly Humans!! Pple who play loud music will never go deaf. Kids will not stop running & jumping. Babies will not stop crying. Adults & teenagers will not stop screaming, fighting, dropping stones, slamming doors, blasting the TV, stomping their brick feet & bumping their cheap sqeaking beds against the walls day and night!!! Acoustic Tiles will do NOTHING to stop that NOISE!! In the meantime, there are three things you can do: (1) Keep filing complaints & lawsuits. (2) Stop the noise by making noise. It seems contradictory but the noise you give them back, is not like the noise you hear. And the noise they receive from you is not like the noise they consistently make. It Will Drive Them Crazy! So be ready!! It's a fight til the finish line! or (3) Get some noise cancelling headphones, try to save your money as best you can and MOVE.💯

Great info, thank you! I wrote to you on the main page (?), I hope you access it. We are going to finish the basement to make an apartment. We’ve had one BBIG FAT FAIL OF $5000 to re-do the existing ceiling of one room that was already done when we bought the house. The expert put 2x4s and rigid foam insulation and 5/8 sheet rock. This was all on top of an already finished ceiling. It did little to reduce impact noise. Now we want to finish the apt. Living room and bedroom LESS EXPENSIVELY and ecologically friendly. Why not reuse old carpet inside the ceiling? Thank you for your reply and you are welcome to come make a video.😊

Hi, Thank you for the video. I live on the ground floor, the architecture of the building is, above my master bedroom, upstairs neighbor has a living room, kitchen and a stairs going to the ground floor, the stair is shared by two units. I hear footsteps in the master bedroom so it seems its the impact noise I am dealing with. I don’t think I want to do major construction for ripping the ceiling to decouple the above floor with the ceiling. Is there any solution which does not requires any construction to lower the impact noise? And I am also curious, when looking at building to move in, what questions needs to be asked to make sure there is no impact noise from upstairs? I understand the airborne noise is avoided if there is double pane windows, for the impact noises what do I need to ask? Thank you!

I live in a location that is about to be renovated soon. The above rooms are part of a short-term rental, and I deal with a lot of impact and audible noise. The audible noise is the least of the problem. The impact noise is the worst. I've been able to mitigate the audible noise by running fans and putting on some relaxing music. It doesn't eliminate it all together but it does seem to help somewhat. However, the impact noise cuts through this. Decoupling sounds like a great idea. But the problem is that the ceilings in my space are extremely low. Because of this I am very limited on height. So this is not going to be feasible. With that said, the floor above can be adjusted... Is there anything that can be done from this aspect?

Thinking about doing the rails on the ceiling and then just 2 layers of 5/8 drywall with green glue on the walls, also on ceiling obviously. Listen carefully to me, if impact boise affets you. MOVE out, you won't be able to fix them regardless of how much you spend. The main structure is to blame nad you cannot change that. Just move, I failed to fix it and had to move frok my own apartment gunna see if I can rent it or sell it later to cut my costs. Even with decoipling and resilient channels, pros only told me they could at most reduce the boise by hopefully 35% at MOST if Im lucky and expensive as hell. 35% is not MUCH if the impact boise is pretty loud and you can hear it through headphones, MOVE. It's hard to accept defeat but trust me, your mental happiness will thank you for doing so

Move or get noise canceling headphones.

@@Brian-rj5rl it’s okay now, they moved already But I don’t know why the responsibility, in your opinion, is on me to move; I really think I shouldn’t have to have be woken up, with her yelling that he should get his f’king water get f’king get back to bed and him screaming at the top of his lungs - but you do you

@peetabrown5813 it's hard to deal with disrespectful neighbors, glad they left. You could complain, but it's unlikely that would change their behavior. The only way for construction to block noise is concrete floors between each level, solid core doors and isolated walls. Rents would probably be 3 or 4 times price for a building like that

No. Complete nonsense. Only things that work are decoupling and changing resonant frequency of panels. This assumes all air gaps are sealed shut.

Decoupling works perfect for both types of sound but not necessary if you’re only problem is airborne noise. Thanks for commenting.

What is the best way to soundproof a roof that have tray design. Like a 2 level/layer design with 4" drop for each level. Was thinking about coupling method along with insulation, but my concern is the hollow/space areas that will be left because of the 2 level tray system. as there will be a 4" hollow section on each level of the tray because of the drop, so that about a 8" hollow section from plus atleast another 1/2"to 1" to the concrete ceiling and spacing behind the middle section of the flat drywall. What would you suggest?

If it’s not only steps, it’s also furniture being dragged, what do you recommend?
