Okay…time for “Aha live from the Star Vista”. I think Ogre is looking for a Mitch slap and that’s do it. Christmas is coming up soon. “Mary Did You Know” would do it for ya. I’m surprised you guys didn’t do “Christmas is Coming” from the nightmare before Christmas for Halloween. Y’all should do a studio video vs a live performance of the same song just to see how much post production isn’t in their music. They recorded “Daft Punk” on equipment in Avi’s closet and recorded the video part in the kitchen on a $400 budget. It won a Grammy.

If you havent seen Can't Hold Us ...well that's a very different side to the group. And not every song has a Mitch Slap. That, in my opinion, would take away from them as a whole. The outstanding thing about these people is that no one steals the show. They are all equally talented in their own way and they allow each other to shine in different performaces. Matt hits a high note in more recent Hallelujah live shows. And Kevin's fifth the kevin show. Ia an excellent choice. The wizard of Ahhhs has Kirstie center stage. As far as the lyrics interpretation and feeling are personal and I read simewhere soemthing to the effect that Simon and Garfunkel recognizes the concept, Disturbed rendition gives us a warning and PTX gives us hope. I thought that was a great way to describe it. I'm torn between PTX and Disturbed. Disturbed has such command and feeling ita hars nit to love love LOVE IT. And a final note...hkw about thirsty for kirstie lol

I don't think they're ready for Aha... They need more songs before going there.
@dinaghikas7933
@dinaghikas7933 11 месяцев назад
I have to totally disagree with you, their arrangement and performance enhanced the lyrics. Just one example, when Kirstie sang the part "my words, like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence", the others echoed "words...words....words" while Kirsty did a downward vocal run, her words falling into the "well". If that isn't drawing you to pay attention to the lyrics, then what is? I would guess that their more emotional and passionate rendering of the song, just doesn't fit with how you are used to hearing it. They took the meaning of the song in a different direction, that's all. But detracting from the lyrics, no way, that ain't it, guys.
@ShinyElfriend
@ShinyElfriend 11 месяцев назад
Simon and Garfunkel's version is a melancholy warning, Disturbed's is a fatalistic, angry, lament, and Pentatonix's expresses the dark undercurrents but inserts a sense of hopefulness. I'm not sure how standing in a row in in an old warehouse is performative, but I guess that they always emote when they sing, so I think I get what you're saying. Normally, I think that the emotion they express only adds to the feel of whatever song they are doing. Its part of what makes them so fascinating to watch, they are always fully inside the music. Great reaction!

No. according to these Musical Prodigy's They did not know how to do it right. They just sang. There was no "emotion"..... Sure. PTX's body language alone in this video shows more emotion than the reactors misrepresentation of it . They just are really good singers. That is ALL.

Due to their crisp and clean vocals, I can recognized the lyrics as I have never had before. For an A Capella presentation, I think you missed the artistry and arrangement on the lyrics. If you compare it with a musical(instrumental) presentation, you guys have missed the whole point of this interpretation. Pentatonix are on their own league. No comparison could ever be realistic. I heard them sing it live. No voice manipulation, modulation or mixing. Sometimes they even sound better live. (BTW) Peter Hollens, Tim Faust version was heavily manipulated.) Just saying...

@@weaintraisedrightpodcast is also the arrangement. It mirrors the lyric. One of you guys pointed to that when he realized something Kirsty did on her part that he had not noticed before. "Raindrops fell" and their voices bringing that image in as they went down the note's scale. And like that are plenty more examples of how they sing certain verses. @janeramirez8767

Allow me to comment on a point of confusion. I bought the original "Sounds of Silence" vinyl album back in 1966 when it first came out. The title of the ALBUM is "Sounds of Silence," but the title of the SONG is "The Sound of Silence." Perhaps due to confusion or a silly decision by the record label, the single was originally released as "The Sounds of Silence," but Paul Simon has repeatedly insisted that the song title is "The Sound of Silence." In the lyrics, whenever the phrase appears, it is singular--sound of silence--until the very last phrase of the song, which is, "and whispered in the sounds of silence." So taking everything together, there's enough evidence on each side of the argument to indicate that we maybe shouldn't judge anyone too harshly for having a different opinion.

@@weaintraisedrightpodcast I actually meant that part ("harsh judgment") in a more general way, because of the way some of my fellow Pentaholics reacted to your stating an opinion that wasn't 100% absolutely wildly favorable toward this particular performance by PTX. I think I understand what you're talking about when saying that some of the other pieces gave more to the lyrics. I kind of feel that same way about the disturbed version, people talk about how awesome it was and how it was so good and when I listened to it I just didn't see it. Doesn't mean it's not a good cover I just wasn't their audience. With PTX version I think what I focused most on was Kevin Olusola. When the drums came in that's when I felt it was the more about the lyrics than the performance, but then again I love me some drums or bass. After listening to some of the other pieces I realize that PTX doesn't use their dynamics as much as some of the other artists to help illustrate the simplicity of silence. that might have been why it wasn't as satisfying as some of the others.

One thing to keep in mind is the age differences between the different performers, as different age/generations will interpret the lyrics differently. For those that are listening, there really isn't a right or wrong answer as to which is better. It's more about what appeals to your ear and, in far more ways than you may realize, what your life experiences have been in the past, what your life is like in the present, and what you see for your life in the future. In my opinion, that was/is the beauty of the Folk Rock genre. While interpretaions may differ from person to person, the relevance of that interpretation to each of us is equally important. For PTX, they are all younger, all raised in families where religious beliefs are an important factor, all believing in love & acceptance of who and what you are, and that positive things can and will emerge from even the darkest negatives that life can throw at you, IF you let it.

You mentioned the presentation distracted from the lyrics but I thought that in the Hollens & Faust Episode 2 review - the video presentation and the reverbs really distracted. Yes, 36 layers is impressive but the ability of Pentatonix to do the songs live with the same song seems more impressive.

Ogre here. Other commenters have helped me figure out what my real problem may be. This version is sung with hope and I don't think that hope fits the lyrics or the original intent of the song. So the presentation wasn't so much the problem as the tone. I didn't recognize that at the time.

The red shirt guy is Geoff Castelluci. Yes, he has an amazing range. I think Matt has the smoothest, most 'velvety' bass voice of the big three, but not the lowest. Geoff Castelluci and Tim Faust are neck and neck for the low notes. Avi is close behind. Interesting 4-way reaction.

Matt is amazing and has been part of PTX for about 7 years now! He is the Bass and a lot of times helps Kevin with 'sounds' as does the rest of the group. He has a very expansive range just like all of the members ... Ok Ogre ... this one is for you! I'm not sure you are really ready, but here it is ... one of the best 'Mitch Slaps' I have felt (very, very young PTX and I think Mitch was on Red Bull) It's called: Pentatonics - Aha Live Singapore, The Star Vista: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aT2Nm4fYmI4.htmlsi=K3kRUlu-K4B6b6ZY It's a crazy performance that was captured on someone's cell phone so the quality is not wonderful and the focus is mainly on Mitch ... BUT ... we Pentaholics are very grateful to the person who recorded this! Avi goes so deep he buzzes the microphone and Mitch ... OMG Mitch! LOL Scott and Kirstie are on stage and Kevin is also there, although you won't see him, but you can hear him - So, I will be very interested to watch your expressions during that song! I will be watching, and thanks for your honest opinions of what you are viewing!! We 'all' have different experiences when we listen to PTX therefore we are going to have different opinions and that is as it should be! You are all 4 very much appreciated! Now, when you get into the holiday spirit, listen to The Prayer (it's the grown up PTX) and it's brilliant! They also just came out with an original for Christmas this year call Please Santa Please - a really upbeat song that just makes you happy!!

While I enjoy this version, especially Scott opening in such a low register, I tend to still prefer Disturbeds version. I've never been able to pin down why, but it might well be that as several people have pointed out the PTX version is more hopeful, while generally I'm expecting it to be far more angry and bleak perhaps, still not sure. That doesn't detract from showcasing great individual talent, beautiful harmony's, reinforcing each other and sections where multiple people blend their voices so skilfully that its difficult to pick them apart.

Songs and they style at which they are sung are different. When it comes to peoples opinions reactions will be different. So although I was moved to tears the first time I heard this version and others are like eehh its ok. Then the person who was eehh on this one is moved to tears on another version which make me go eehh. Matt brings his own flavor to the group. Avi had something different that Matt can't do. If I had to choose I would choose Avi over Matt but I love Matt and they have great songs produced since he came along. I love Avi's solo music so its not all bad. We probably wouldn't have that had he stuck with PTX.
@df5199
@df5199 11 месяцев назад
However, there are other things Matt can do that Avi can’t. That’s very apparent when you see them in concert. I see it as a wash. They are very different and talented singers. I think it comes down to personal preference. I think Matt, in my personal opinion, fits in better with Pentatonix’s newer music. No disrespect to Avi as he is a great artist.
@Fairburne69
@Fairburne69 11 месяцев назад
@@df5199 I agree with all of what you said. They each have skills the other doesn't. PTX evolved/changed to fit Matt and it works. I personally would choose Avi over Matt but not if it meant no Avi solo career. It's probably best that it happened the way it did. We still get great PTX music and we get Avi's solo music which I love. The one negative I have of Matt. I heard him do Hallelujah live and I did not like it. But as far as I can remember that is the one and only thing I have not liked from him. I'm trying real hard to not be a troll hear and just expressing opinion. I do think Matt is fantastic. So near as I can tell, S&G always maintained that it was sound even though the album has the song listed as sounds. S&G blame the studio. When they whisper it at the end of the song it is "sounds." At this point I guess there's no wrong answer. It seems as though those that cover it go with the singular that Paul said was the correct way. That was unsatisfying. I was hoping for a more definitive answer.

The lyrics to the song are not optimistic or hopeful in any way and the version Disturbed did was perhaps much more true to the lyrics. This version is much more hopeful which is a very different take on the song and also feels very out of sync with the lyrics. I love Pentatonix and recognize their enormous talent, however, this version, while being fabulous, is not the best one out there. And that's okay. A lot of their covers are the best versions of those songs.

Ogre made a valid point which kind of made me rethink what I was going to say. Pentatonix are freaking incredible with their version. But as Ogre says the song loses it's meaning. I understand the thought that they don't have depth, because of the production values. I disagree though. I feel like each of them captured the emotion of their verse in their own particular way.
