The Hook is the Chorus of the song. He is saying the words of the song dont matter, only his voice does. He will make you emotional regardless of what he says and then the chorus (hook) will real you back in and make you sing along.
@douglasmurata4945
@douglasmurata4945 2 года назад
And the song is done to the tune of Canon in D by Pachelbel, the now infamous “four chord” song. So many successful pop songs use that chord progression, so he’s basically saying “I can sing about anything and use this four chord hook and you’ll listen.” What I love most about this is that, unlike other “four chord” songs, Hook continues with more of Canon in D than other pop songs, and doesn’t rely on just the four chord hook.

This song is so brilliant in that he tells you exactly what he’s about to do, does exactly what he said he was gonna do, and most people respond exactly how he said they would. Even the music itself isn’t particularly original, it’s a jam on Pachabel’s Canon in D one of the most commonly used chord progressions in history. Basically, this is John Popper’s (the singer’s) hot take on the state of the music industry back in the early 90s, and the irony of the whole thing is that it became probably their most successful release and helped launch the band into the mainstream public’s eye. One of my favorite bands with a deep, deep discography through the years.

BTW the song is about the 3 minute music industry, "the Hook" is what brings you in and the music is insincere. He's basically trashing the MTV music generation while playing on MTV, it was kind of genius. Brad nailed it on the first listen.

@snausauges
@snausauges 2 года назад
@@ChristopherCribbs the song has several different inferences. One, hook is the slang name for a harmonica solo. Two, hook is a ear bug that makes people come back and he trolls with this saying you can write the same old tired over player crap and people will still buy into it. The point is proven when John popper based this song off of the well over sampled and copied pachelbels canon in d. This song is used in hook as a joke, this whole song was meant to be a finger to how music is being over produced and lacking soul and inventiveness. I makes me feel good to see you two appreciate music like this from the 90's , it bridges a gap between generations. Reminds me of my appreciation my father instilled on me for 70's and 80's music. ❤

This was a great reaction, and it was super fun watching it live. Brad got the joke right off the bat. Lex didn't even notice. The perfect example of it working. PERFECT. This is also the same never-ending chord progression of Pachelbel's Canon. LOTS of pop songs use this same chord progression, especially in the hooks of those songs. Look up "Pachelbel Rant" here on RU-vid.

I always thought the beginning of this was him singing about how he could sing about anything as long it was catchy even the words wouldn't matter. and the hook of the song will always bring you back if the music (including the way the words are sung) was catchy enough. And he was right, cause this song is so damn catchy.

Yes this song was about the music industry in general. About how you could write about nothing, throw in some cultural references to relate to people and keep them engaged with the catchy "hook". While still saying nothing original or real.

From Wiki: The chord progression of "Hook" is very similar to the basic structure of Pachelbel's Canon in D,[3][4] (D-A-Bm-F#m-G-D-G-A, or I-V-vi-iii-IV-I-IV-V),[5] but transposed to the key of A major. This chord progression is very widely used in popular music, often as the hook, leading to other satirical takes on the use of this chord structure. The song's lyrics, aimed directly at the listener, assert that the lyrical content of any song is effectively meaningless, as the song's musical hook will keep listeners coming back, even if they are unaware of the reason. The song is genius. And also, you're listening to the Jimi Hendrix of harmonica playing. Many consider him the best.

"The Hook" is the chorus of the song, that grabs your attention and keeps you listening. No matter what else is going on the rest of the time that most people pay no attention to, The Hook snags you and you sing along for 20 or 30 seconds.

John Popper, lead singer, harmonica player and song writer of Blues Traveler, went to college for music theory and to get a degree in playing the harmonica. He graduated with honors. I got to see Blues Traveler in Philly in a club in 1990. Even then, you knew he was going to be big, and John was a big, big man, he has since trimmed down. Great voice and the rest of the band is very tight and right.

He went to the New School in NJ, I believe. After some serious heart complications, he got gastric bypass some time around '99. The public's perception of JCP's weight unfortunately hindered Traveler's success. JCP himself said, "The reason the band hasn't been featured more prominently in our recent videos is because of the circumference of my ass." Wish they would've gotten more accolades, especially JCP.

I have watched this reaction several times now. This video is proof to me that these reactions add to the content of the original material in a very meaningful way. Brad was paying attention to the lyrics and the meaning, Lex was mostly just vibing, and that demonstrates perfectly the two levels on which this song works, which is more or less the entire point of the song. For a first listen to nail this natural dichotomy is awesome!

The “hook” of a song is what many songwriters strive for because it’s something that the listener likes to sing along with even if they don’t know the rest of the lyrics. Just think of how many songs you play and belt out the hook when it comes on even when you don’t know the meaning.

The song was a troll against the music industry for trying to force him to writing pop songs to sell instead of his artistry. The music industry abandoned him not too long after this. Also, the music itself is trollish. The music is an interpretation of Pacobel's Canon in D minor, a classical piece of music. It's used a lot in pop songs, such as "Memories" (the newest I can think of.)
