Reminds me of "Doin' The Dougie". I heard this song yesterday on Radio Veronica, the internet radio station on iTunes. I'm glad there is a nifty music video, from Hullabaloo, no less.
I too remember this the Mouse, However I wish someone had the song he also was famous for- "Pah-a-laf-aka", "They whisper it all over Turkey,,, and it's there I'll stay, till the very day, I find out what Pah-a-laf-aka Means!" Anyone remember that ? - Peter
Yes, I remember pakalafika! I have to say, the orchestral arrangement on the Hullabaloo skit backing Soupy was phenomenal! Very well done. I would buy the record just for the background music.
@sglasspool LIke all comedians throughout history, Soupy was making fun of the pop culture of the time, namely dance crazes like The Twist, The Stroll, and god help us: The Hully Gully.
Keep in mind that Soupy was 39 years old when he did this tune, and was considered too old to be considered a teenybopper, but the kids & teenyboppers bought it anyway. Composed by Four Seasons songwriters Sandy Lizner & Denny Randell, and recorded with teen idol Trade Martin on lead guitar & background vocals. The song may sound silly, but it was influential as a parody of dance crazes featuring animals like The Monkey & The Pony. If Soupy didn't get to record it, Chubby Checker might have gotten it first if he'd had a chance. Frank Sinatra was a big fan of Soupy's and was invited on his show to get a pie in the face , as requested. He not only got a pie in the face, but a big pie fight that messed up the whole sound stage. Sammy Davis Jr. & Trini Lopez got pies in the faces as well. I'm from the Metro Detroit area, so Soupy is still considered a Detroit legend nearly 70 years later after he was popular in Detroit during the 1950's.
