Political parties in South Africa are on the campaign trail ahead of next month's parliamentary elections.
The governing African National Congress is expected to face a tough challenge.
Its parliamentary majority could be threatened for the first time since the party came to power in 1994.
Some politicians have turned to populist rhetoric to appeal to voters.
Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller reports from Johannesburg on how these tactics are being received:
Sandile Swana is a political analyst who specialises in South African governance. He joins us from Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg to discuss the latest updates.

@SportsSpectrumOTLPodcast
@SportsSpectrumOTLPodcast 6 месяцев назад
Because South Africa’s case at the ICJ against Israel has nothing to do with elections, that’s the national govt’s actions. The matter discussed is important because MPs in Parliament are the ones who vote & pass the very laws we rely on govt & public officials to enforce (like immigration & border patrol), which would matter to Al Jazeera whose country has relations with us. It would be vacuous to discuss loadshedding’s importance in elections when the specific topic has no economical/industrial/environmental/global link. Loadshedding is more of a local problem so it makes sense for SABC to cover that not Al Jazeera. CNN may cover it because of international investment but Al Jazeera don’t have to.

@@pablocharlie The problem is, historically, it's usually at this exact juncture that democracy comes off the Rails. When the long serving ruling party faces loss of power. It's a scourge of the developing world unfortunately. There are some ominous signs in South Africa that the ruling party might go rogue. The flirtation with authoritarian Russia and China, the blatantly false statements being put out by the government concerning loadshedding, even the "new" Zuma party. We'll see.

Poor journalism. I thought i would learn something new but this lady talks about xenophobia as if it's a constant issue in SA, when that situation happened over 8 years ago i think, meanwhile European countries like UK, France, Italy and even the US call it an "immigration crisis" but when it's SA its called "xenophobia". By the way, just by the way that word doesn't make South Africans feel bad anymore because it had been overused and abused so much that it doesn't even hold any significance anymore when you call a SAn xenophobic, it's like calling a person anti-semitic nowadays. You don't even feel bad anymore being called anti-Semitic infact you even want to agree that you are just to spite them😂😂Same thing

looking at this video - africans love dancing + asians love math. maybe why the post-colonial reality for these 2 continents have been so different
@TD1237
@TD1237 6 месяцев назад
Asia as a continent never had *as* large a coIoniaI presence as Africa (except India). For whatever reason, corrption seems to thrive in post-coIoniaI societies. Hence why we're in the current situation. I know you really just meant to leave a raclst comment for no reason, but I felt like typing this out anyway.

@@TD1237 not meant to be racist at all. small countries like Rwanda are doing well bcs they prioritise education, including STEM + coding. South Africa, which once had 1st world infrastructure, is deteorating bcs of the leaders you choose
@TD1237
@TD1237 6 месяцев назад
@@lm_b5080 That's not what your comment said. You said Africans like dancing (not doing maths) and that's why our continent is in its current situation. It's definitely raclst. As for your second comment, it's not only because of leaders we choose. Corrption and negotiations with lmperiaIists are so common place here that much of the leadership is in it for themselves. And the less corrpt parties are often extensions of foreign powers lile the USA. So, whilst people should carefully analyse who they vote for more, the selection is not very good - not to mention how many live in poverty and aren't in a good position to make a good choice in the elections anyway.
@lm_b5080
@lm_b5080 6 месяцев назад
@@TD1237 yes & i stand by my comment. if you look at how disciplined asian families are about education (particularly science + math) you can see why the countries developed so fast. is this mindset present among african parents? how many tech giants has south africa produced? & why is its infrastructure failing? ..at some point you have to stop blaming "imperialists" & take ownership of your own development - vietnam, korea, singapore..these countries were much poorer than african countries & have surpassed them. why is that? what is your solution?

@@pleaseandthankyou4161 being against doesn't mean you support other organisations doing the same thing. 🤷 The ANC is more in line with the Palestinian Authority. It's just that Hamas is more active in Gaza at present. Communicate with their leaders just as the Western powers do in Doha (the Middle East's diplomatic negotiation hub). They have made it clear many times that they only care about finding the solution to the conflict. 🤷
