South Africa vs Kenya! Battle of the Emerging Markets...

South Africa became part of the BRICS group back in twenty ten and its clear to see why. From two thousand and two through to two thousand and eight, the country experienced annual growth averaging a tad under five percent per year and at times during that period it had teased the eight percent level giving a glimpse of the possibilities ahead. With vast natural resources such as gold, diamonds and platinum, excellent infrastructure and easy access to finance for business it had all the right ingredients in place for this trend to continue. The global recession hit hard however and, after a sharp contraction in the economy of six percent, it never really found its feet again. An increasingly corrupt government and high crime rates haven’t helped win foreign investment back into the region and South Africa’s currency, the rand, has lost fifty percent of its value against the dollar in the last five years. Nearly a third of that loss has been in the past year alone. Just like it famous cured meat called Biltong - that’s got to be tough to swallow.
Today the economy is a shadow of its former self. Roughly a quarter of the population is unemployed, commodity prices have slumped and major exports such as iron ore and platinum are tumbling. The country is also in the grip of an energy crisis. State-owned Eskom, the utility company which generates around ninety five percent of the country’s energy is suffering from years of underinvestment. The result is rolling blackouts across the country to manage demand and this has had a major impact in the South Africa’s economic recovery. Mounting debt and a poor economic outlook have led to the major credit ratings agencies suggesting a downgrade of their credit status to junk in their next review. A move which will put the final nail in the coffin of a possible South African recovery and leave their Rugby team as the only thing worth keeping an eye on for the foreseeable future.
With South Africa’s emerging market crown now sitting in pieces around President Zuma’s feet, you would think the obvious choice as its successor would be Nigeria. Its large economy has performed well in recent years, but the drop in oil prices has hit the country hard. Currency has weakened, inflation has moved into double digit figures and the country has fallen into recession. Egypt is viewed as part Africa, part Middle East, but it’s in no state to pick up the baton either. Tourism has taken a heavy hit following flight bans to Sharm el-Sheikh after the downing of a Russian passenger jet in 2015. The country has just received a twelve billion dollar bailout from the IMF in return for a range of strict austerity measures to try and get it back on its feet.
So step forward Kenya. An economic minnow when it comes to GDP but one that has shown amazing resilience and stability for well over a decade. It’s averaged growth of over five point four percent since two thousand and four and managed to maintain a positive outlook even when the rest of the world was reeling from the two thousand and eight recession. Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing account for roughly one quarter of the country’s economy. Manufacturing and tourism are also strong industry sectors, but there’s no single industry which Kenya is reliant upon to drive its economy. It’s this diversity along with extensive investment in infrastructure over the past few years which has seen Kenya become the economy on the move in the African continent. Unlike its oil producing neighbours South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria who have all been hit hard by the slump prices, Kenya imports almost all of its energy needs and has benefited hugely from shrinking oil prices. That’s allowed it to divert some of its funds into a fledgling renewables sector and with a recent Deloitte report projecting an above six percent growth pattern for the next five years at least, you’d have to uncover some pretty compelling evidence to suggest that Kenya won’t continue its growth surge for many more years after that.
What we’ve learnt above all else though from this video series, is that emerging economies are unpredictable. A country that seems like it might become the next economic superpower one minute, can be down on its knees scrabbling for pennies in the dirt the next. The rapidly changing social, political and economic nature of emerging economies are what make them so exciting to investors the world over. But it’s those same rapidly changing processes that can also become their downfall. There’s no doubt that emerging markets provide some of the best opportunities in the world for the savvy investor to trade, but with great opportunity comes great risk. So if you’re thinking of dipping your toe in the waters of the emerging markets without some detailed research and a strong risk management strategy, be very careful out there.

Countries such as Japan, Singapore, Spain, Canada, Russia, and other first words, have high debt to GDP ratio compared to Kenya (source: worldpopulationreview.com/countries/countries-by-national-debt). The actual question should be on how a country spends the loan money which again Kenya seems to be spending it well (not denying the element of corruption) compared to most African countries. in my view, Kenya is on the right track on development. It may not be as developed as South Africa anytime soon, but it is creating a good environment for investors.

Am Tanzanian and we all know Kenya and Ethiopia are no joke... Kenya has one of the most educated population in Africa, they are the proclaimed Silicon Valley of Africa due to their innovations like Mpesa(first mobile banking in the world), does not rely on mineral resources like Gold, diamonds and oil(yet oil has been discovered in 2018 in Turkana)it also has one of the best presidents so far. Ethiopia has one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, human resource is plenty due to their population and a growing spending culture... South Africa is a fading giant and they have no new ideas to revamp their economy plus their politicians sell out their country for dimes and nobody is interested in investing in Nigeria and South Africa anymore. Things are changing in Africa now.

The sheer number of my compatriots (Kenyans) commenting on this rather obscure channel in my view supports the correct views on Kenya. We have many challenges but we have a well educated, young, hungry for success, hardworking and resilient population. The entrepreneurial spirit is very strong. Despite the fact that many Kenyans themselves are poor for some reason we don't feel ill will against the wealthy locals or foreigners or feel entitled to automatic good life. Everyone knows and believes they can make it too and up to us individually to keep trying, no time for self pity and blaming everyone else under the sun.

RSAs gdp per capita is literally 4 times that of Kenya and the gdp of RSA is 5 times that of Kenya even though these countries have similar population numbers. What's happening to South Africa now is what eventually happens to partially developed third world economies. You will always hit a wall eventually. Thats capitalism. Don't think that kenya wont come across the same problem eventually. High growth economic is unsustainable. Don't get too excited.

@@nephneph7299 1) Lmao RSA doesn't have oil. 2) South Africa has a much longer history of innovation than Kenya 3) There is no such thing as an economy that 'relies on labour' 4) Multiple countries don't have any valuable resources yet are rich eg. South Korea. And there are multiple countries with an abundance of resources and rare earth minerals that are underdeveloped eg. DRC. Bringing up how much resources a country has is irrelevant with regard to it's economic development and status. 5) I can't find a case where someone was arrested for being gay, but that's not the be all and end of oppression and discrimination. For instance, people have been kicked out of apartments they are renting for their sexual orientation. www.google.com/amp/amp.abc.net.au/article/10824344 For me, that's bad enough. In RSA, we made discrimination against people on the basis of their sexual orientation unconstitutional back in 1996. While Kenya won't even Repeal colonial laws that discriminate against LGBT. That should tell you something about the state of your society.

The diverse nature of the Kenyan economy is what keeps it afloat. 'despite the corruption' The Kenyan economy continues to grow horizontally, In the 80's and 90's Agriculture was the backbone of the economy in 2019 nothing really can be classified as the backbone anymore. The financial sector has matured proper, the tech industry has put Kenya's Silicon Savanah on the global map, proper infrastructure is coming up fast, manufacturing is growing fast, cost of doing business is down significantly, we are now Africa's renewable energy powerhouse among many more factors. If your going to put money in Africa put it in Kenya and it will trickle down to the whole great lakes region.

I am afraid economic growth is not economic development. The two terms are too often confused with each other. When both of them are taken into consideration, one finds that a country may have a high economic growth rate as many African countries do today, but still lag way behind in terms of economic development. Hence, it is much more difficult to attain a high economic development than a high economic growth. Therefore, when comparing the economic performance of one country with another, it is important to relate to both economic terms, to get an accurate picture.

As an African living in the uk, I listen to your program, thinking that it could enlighten me, until you said Egypt is part of Africa and the Middle East. If you can mislead your viewer to something that is so eviouse, Egypt is in Africa, I then concluded that your other information could not be credible and must be biased.
@chiminycrickets
@chiminycrickets 7 лет назад
tejan kamara he said Egypt is 'viewed' as part Middle East part Africa, he did not in any way allude to its Geographical placement so just give him a break please. It is true Egypt is a key player in Middle East politics and Policy, Egyptian government is more active in Middle East politics than it is in African matters hence that statement.... We all know where Egypt is geographically...
@musakam

I agree with you indeed, however, he was given his own analysis of the African economy. If Egypt is viewed as the Middle East, that does not make it right, the term Middle East is a recently use term. If he want people like me to take him seriously, he should state fact, not what others view thing for political reasons.

Investors looks at facts differently. when Egypt had issues, Saudi helped but the same would not happen to most African countries including Somalia that is predominantly Muslim. Investors might consider middle East when investing in Egypt.
@Nick13ro
@Nick13ro 7 лет назад
He is in fact correct. there's such a notion as the MENA region which stands for Middle East-North Africa. That's the area he's talking about. North Africa is significantly different culturally and demographically from sub Saharan Africa and therefore it's more commonly lumped together with the rest of the arab states rather than with Africa. Also further back North Africa was part of the Roman Empire while the rest of Africa was not. So it is perceived as separate from the rest of the continent and part of the Mediterranean countries.

Although the slumped SA economy, South Africa is still by far the most developed and richest nation on the continent. The USA is also having a down-sliding economy and so is china, so this this mean they've now lost their status and the world must look at a different country? NO. No matter how hard Kenya, Nigeria, or Egypt may try, south Africa is unparalleled, sure, the economy is struggling up the hill on 4th gear, but it still remains Africa's only true giant with Nigeria shortly behind. Economy isn't the only factor that must be seen as the only indicator of a country's development. SA has the most developed infrastructure BY FAR. SA is compared closely to European nations when it comes to communications, technology, road, rail, port, air, etc. The Johannesburg stock exchange is among the top 2 largest stock exchange in the southern hemisphere, and the largest in Africa! There is definitely widespread corruption, its undeniable. but imagine the potential SA would have if the gov roots out corruption. Lost to 'state capture' alone according to former finance minister PG, is R100bn ($8bn) which is nearly HALF the Malawian GDP. You cannot compare South Africa with the other states in Africa. maybe only with Nigeria, but Compare eggs with eggs.

This video is pure propaganda from the West to discredit South Africa now that it has stopped being their golden child. I've noticed this trend for awhile. He spent a large part of the video only highlighting and over-inflating the negatives of South Africa, yet he didn't do the same for Kenya. The power problem part was a bit of a stretch considering South Africa produces the most electricity in the continent and also supply other countries. He comes across as biased as far as South Africa is concerned.

Kenya has no mineral wealth to compare to Nigeria or South Africa. Like Singapore we seek to excel in the services sector and attract players from all over the place. Technology and innovation is a big thing up here. At the end of the day, it's not how big the economy is but how well spread out are the benefits. SA is a big economy but owned by a tiny fraction of the whites. I'm certain most blacks look at the miracles of that economy like a visitor to a zoo - from outside looking inside.

The country has been investing heavily in its infrastructure and its relationship with China remains strong. Just look at who is investing in the country and you will realize where the country's potential is headed. It is the main gateway in eastafrica and central africa. Moreover, the neighbouring countries including Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Rwanda are also doing very well economically. East Africa is the place to invest right now

They tried using that to their advantage, local n foreign banks..the media ran a story of how bad investor confidence would be if banks where fined to hard... LOL at ALL the comments here, old 2017 and new 2018. Watching in MARCH 2018. Oh how much has changed politically in both countries. We know political stability is more important to incoming foreign investors... so all the GDP, HMI, currency, commodities, power, oil, economic mumbo jambo is totally irrelevant at this point.☝️ Kenyans online will annihilate my comments below, but this has all happened in 8months... POLITICS IS VERY EMOTIVE🤗 Kenya at this point is politically unstable, with 2 presidents. 1/4 of Kenyans allegiance is to the gvt of Kenyatta and 3/4 to the peoples president Raila Odinga. Elections were held in Aug 2017. But, as the EU observer mission reported, Odinga won the elections clear. However, Kenyatta held onto power by the barrel of the gun. Killing hundreds who protested in the streets to the gvt stealing the election. For the 3rd time in global history, Kenyas supreme ct annulled the election after opposition took the gvt to court. A second election was held, opposition withdrew from running, Kenyatta ended up obviously winning with NO competition...protests continued, but the gvt strangled the opposition protesters and subdued the judiciary by threats & intimidation. Kenya is rife with tribalism, police brutality, corruption is at the heighest in Africa and the Kenyatta gvt have looted the economy dry, borrowed billions of dollars, had their credit rating downgraded by Moodys, inflation is knocking at the kenyan door. Today the auditor general released the gvts audit for 2016-2017 (election yr)... They cant account for 2billion which went into a secret President acct. The gvt borrowed 2.5 USD billion Eurobond which disappeared... NOT USED FOR ANY DVLPT PROJECTS, then when that bond became due, they then borrowed another 2 USD billion to pay the first bond. The Kenyatta gvt, is amending the very progressive robust 2010 Kenyan Constitution to allow him to remain in power beyond the term limit and then some. Worst part of Kenyas story is tht the "democratic" west has colluded with the illigitimate gvt and is condoning human rights abuses, gvt abusing and defying judicial court orders, ignoring the constitution and looting the economy dry. Why? Because of the newly discovered oil in Kenyas north. The US envoy in kenya is way too entangled in the corrupt illegitimate, tyrannical gvt that its laughable to expect Trumps messy admin to even recall him anytime soon. Kenya is a non MF factor. 🇰🇪👎 As for SA, well... Zuma resigned, Ramaphosa took over. Julius Malema is still hurling insults at the ANC, claiming Zuma & Ramaphosa are cut from the same cloth. At least SA is NOT assaulting and arresting Opposition leaderz like the kenyan gvt is doing. Many argue tht SA shd have held fresh elections after Zuma just the way many argue tht In ZIM, fresh elections shd hv been held when Mugabe was toppled by the military. Meanwhile, its refreshing to see the Guptas falling like leaves finally bcz they have also looted SA economy dry. 70% of farmland is still owned by white farmers. Blacks continue to feel disenfranchised. But thru all this, the country is stable. So, id bank my coins in Rainbow Nation. 🇿🇦👍
