In this 2003 World Cup , the captains had been given a piece of paper which had showed a table with the Duckworth Lewis target . Fielding captain Jayasuriya was carrying one in his pocket . Now the table was showing the total score to tie after a particular over . So, for South Africa , the table was showing , 229 for 6 to tie after 45 overs . It is the responsibility of the south african management and captain to know how to read the table . Unfortunately , Protea Batter Mark Boucher had been told that the target after 45 overs was 229 for 6 and not 230 for 6 . So , during the 6th ball of the 45th over , with the score on 229, Mark Boucher defended the off spin delivery towards short midwicket and the two batters did not run . Boucher had thought that 229 for 6 was enough after the 45th over . After the match, retired Aussie ODI Captain told the media , and I am paraphrasing here , "When you are a professional cricketer, getting paid well , it is your responsibility to know how the DL method works and how to read the DL method table" . So near , yet so far again for South Africa .
No one talk about the fact that Srilankans were forced to bowl last couple of overs while it was raining. Spinners bowled with a wet ball. One wide went as four byes. If it wasn't for rain, South Africa could have easily lost
Well said... Srilanka were easy winners... I remember for a few overs saf couldn't get the ball off the square. That team was excellent in putting the stranglehold on teams wth it's spin options led by Murali and able support by Jayasuriya, arnold, chandana, Dharmasena previously.
Tbh the communication wasn’t on the fault of South Africa. Surely someone could’ve said 229 is the D/L par and 230 is the D/L target. At least now they’re a lot more clearer about it
They have always had a great team, however they perform poorly as a unit in must win or knock out games. Frankly speaking, the only time they really had luck against them was when they were 232/6 in 48 overs vs England in 1992 cwc semifinals chasing 253 when it rained. Then as per D/L method revised target they needed 21 runs to win in 1 ball, that was sheer bad luck. Apart from that it was nothing but a unit crumbling.
Nah wouldn't say that. They won the 3 Rugby World Cups not so unlucky I would say. Thats more wins than India's 2 Cricket World Cups. I think England is more unlucky in general.
Poor Shaun Pollock, the way he talked in the end clearly showed that he might have cried a lot that night. RSA tied against Australia in the 1999 CWC semifinal but were eliminated as Australia had beaten them in the group stage and then another tied match against SL in the 2003 CWC in the group stage where they needed to win to be ahead on points table to qualify for the next round but couldn't complete that one damn run.
If rain had not choked out South Africa, the Sri Lankan bowling attack would have choked out South Africa below 260 with the help of their masterclass fielding! Believe that!
Lance Klusener was still at the crease and potentially could have got them home, but the fact that rain intervened means we will never know. If Boucher scored just one more run they would have been in
Rules are Rules i remember this game watching on TV 1st of all South Africans themselves are the responsible for this ousted why their team management not inform the players what they need at the end of that over? secondly Russel Arnold delayed the next over's 1st ball maybe intentionally he could bowl atleast 1 or two balls before rain falls heavily. Match called off and tie was not enough for Chokars to remain in the tournament bad Luck Lot of Respect for SA team Love from PAKISTAN 🇵🇰
South Africa is again unlucky due to miscalculation of required run according to duck worth Lewis like 1992 because they left empty the last ball in which some runs scored easily and in 1992 south Africa have not table of required run after every over.
Gut wrenching till date... But that 2003 performance was pathetic.. So called Legend Kallis could never Influence or enhance Saf chances in any world Cup he played... He didn't score a 50 this tournament
@@John-pl8fe what abt icc knockout trophy of 1998 the only sa won due to him, even in 199 wc he playes superbably,if other player choke u gotta blame them
The very unfortunate team in the world. This team has all times great allrounders too. Kallis never won the ICC tournament for SA, even though he is the best all-rounder. Very sad.
It's always unfair by icc, if one team percentage is high of winning, that should be winner or if not then match should be replayed on reserve day, rather then given equal points to both teams, as here SA was winning 100% if rain was not there, so there was very less chances of SL win, but it should not be like that
Had the rain not arrived sa would have lost 9/10 times as this is how often you can chase 40 runs off 30 balls being 6 down and only one recognised batsman at the crease.
if SA had won this match , then SA and kenya would have got 16 points and on the basis of run rate SA would have reached in super six and kenya would have been out
