South African Grille Install

This week, we take a break from rust repair, and install my new grille!
Ive always wanted a South African grille on my Vanagon. Other than great looks, it provides much better lighting.

Now you have a Microbus. That's what they're called here in South Africa. I am so glad I saw this video. Been wondering why all vanagons only have a single set of lights. Didn't even know of the South African grille. Thanks. Cheers.

@@maartin37 my old man has one of those Microbuses which had an engine conversion done. Ford Granada 3L in there. He still has the damn thing and I can't stand it

I ran H4 bulbs on both my Honda ST1300s. I never had much luck with the lites lasting very long. It could be the banging they took being at the front of the bike. Great video.

Cha ching!! Sweet upgrade! I went for the H4 upgrade, then went one step further and replaced them with a much lower draw LED also plug and play at west than 1/4 the draw. It may not be a issue for you, but my Alt couldn't handle them...

slim pickins I’ve actually been thinking of doing the same thing and putting LEDs. Did you just change the bulb to an LED one? If so, which did you get?

@@gottasplit5707 Yes just the bulb, it fit into my H4 lights. they are fan cooled, and plug in the existing harness. these are the ones I used, Im very happy with them JDM ASTAR Newest Version No Dark Spot Design 7th Generation 8000 Lumens Extremely Bright H4 9003 LED Headlight Bulbs Conversion Kit, Xenon White- Adjustable Light Angel Not Blinding On Coming Driver

The Vanagon I bought about 6 weeks ago has a South African Grill. However, I think whoever wired it upon install got something backwards. If my running lights or headlights are on, my turn indicators do not work....so I am going to have to get in there and open it up. When I first got it, the flashers and brake lights weren't working. A broken connector on one of the the master cylinder sensors was the issue for that. So yeah, that's why I came looking for your video. They look so good installed. I just can't use my headlights or drive at night because of the indicators not working at night.

wow, never heard of that happening. I wonder what's wired wrong to do that. My grille came with wiring instructions from GoWesty. Maybe it would help to find their instructions on their website and compare what you have to the instructions. Hopefully you can get it working without too much of a hassle.

crimp connectors SUCK! Def go with solder/shrink, maybe even some glue on the edges for an ideal seal

Agreed! For small stuff on the interior I can see their usefulness, but on anything that needs to weather the elements, got to go with the solder. I’m always a bit apprehensive about using glue on anything, just because it leaves residue if you ever need to take stuff apart, and I always seem to get it everywhere when I use it. Putting a little silicone grease on the soldered wires before putting the shrink wrap on seals it really well, and prevents corrosion if any water does find its way in.
