THIS VIDEO: Peter Magubane , one of South Africa’s early black photojournalists passed away on the 1st day of this year at the age of 91. From the 1950s he photographed the impact of apartheid on the county’s black population and captured a sense of the everyday brutality of this race-fixated society. His photographs have become part of the visual imagery that marks the apartheid era. He was shot 17 times by buckshot and rubber bullets and his house was burnt down. He was a friend to both Nelson Mandela and his wife, Winnie - and after Mandela’s release from 27 years imprisonment in 1990, Magubane became his official photographer. Magubane’s achievements motivated a generation of black photojournalists, but he was despised by the police and the apartheid regime. He was made to pay for his commitment to his chosen path - receiving beatings and spending 586 days in jail.
