As a hunter you owe it to the animals to become efficient. Having a outfitter just take you to deer to shoot is a blessing and i have been on multiple trips but man practice with your bow but an xtra pack of broadheads and shoot them.
No, the arrow fell out somewhere close to the one mile mark. Certainly nowhere close to gut. To be honest we were shocked it didn't spine him. Maybe 1 to 2 inches below spine and was back.
Great buck and way to keep after it and recover him. Been bow hunting since 1984 and have killed many critters with all kinds of setups. A word of advice from an old man. Get a 600 gr arrow setup with a G5 montec three blade head or any cut on contact head and shoot about three citters with that and see the difference.
I find it selfish that some people go out shoot and wound deer, and still continue to do it over and over again. I think until a person is able to consistently shoot well, and have a limit to what they can, and cannot shoot is critical. I get that mistakes happen in the moment everybody makes them. But next time go out and practice a ton before you go out a shoot at live animals. It’s only fair, and they deserve to die a relatively quick, humane death. Good luck this season, and go to the range a little more often.
Just being 100% transparent here but I actually did practice daily from June 1 on like I do every year. However it's bowhunting, mistakes happen. What wasn't seen in this video is I actually talked with the guys and truly thought the hunt was over and gave a massive effort to find that buck. After reviewing the footage they all agreed it was non lethal. True story, they later had a rifle hunter shoot that buck and was just fine. If I thought it was lethal I would've spent the rest of the days there searching for that buck. I truly believe it's more selfish to not show your mistakes like 99.9% of all hunting videos you watch. I'm human, not perfect, and that's part of the story. I'll show my mistakes, learn from them, and hopefully help others learn from them as well.
Case in point why I switched from mechanicals to fixed 2 blade hardened steel 150 grain honed with a leather wheel to razor sharp. With the head I use, your first shot would have been a pass through and most likely would have never needed a follow-up. Thanks for sharing the hunt.
You could be right could be wrong. I've shot deer with fixed and even a heavier arrow 525gr to be exact at 20 yds hit bone and still didn't get pass through with minimal blood. I've shot both equally over the years of hunting. All boils down to just make a good shot and doesn't matter which one you choose. In this instance I was just a touch high with this buck reaction. The follow up shot was 20 yds and quartered away. 2 inch cut went through out the middle of his brisket. He was literally drained of blood within seconds after the shot and the arrow was sticking in the dirt. Bottom line we do our best, sometimes that's enough, sometimes it's not. It's hunting and believe you should use whatever you're comfortable with.
Here was my last straw with mechanicals - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9JXvtZJm7V0.html - as you can see, great arrow placement except for that pesky shoulder bone. The head I use now would have penetrated through that bone. If you watch the boys on Hunting Public and the Ranch Fairy talk about this subject, their discussion mirrors my experience with mechanicals. I’ve killed a lot of deer with mechanicals but have lost too many for my liking. All the best and thanks for sharing an honest hunt when a lot of folks would have just cut the reality out and made themselves look like the hero. All the best.
Maybe check your FOC, broad head function, and get some additional range time before you come back out here. I hate those two bucks had to suffer. Been bowhunting for 40+ years, so I understand this happens...but twice? Fix that buddy. Good job on staying after him though, glad that worked out for you.
Gotta watch that farting out there......unless you can fart like something that smells like a mule deer buck's fart, then it's an asset. Lol! Congrats! He made you work for it but that makes it even more satisfying. That thing is huge!
Oh well stuff happens and if he dies it's coyote bait or somebody will get him during rifle season I know there's a lot of people going to give you shit but half of them can't shoot straight either and half of them probably hunt from the truck too😂 and that deer was moving and even in a perfect situation shit can happen
As a South Dakota resident you coming here and poking at deer clearly out of your range is a disgrace to ethical bow hunting and you clearly need to stick to your tree stand hunting at 10 to 20 yards.
As a tax paying united states of America conservationists I can say I did put in my time practicing and simply screwed up. The difference between our show and many is that we actually show it. We're human and mess up. If you only knew how many ppl/shows don't show this and show only the good days your mind would be blown. As much as other hunters need to see the success they also need to see we're all human and there are mishaps. I have the upmost respect for the game I chase and took this really hard. No one was harder on me than myself. I don't or didn't think it was OK. Not making excuses simply stating we're gonna show it all. The good, bad, and ugly not only for a reminder to ourselves but to others as well. For the record the first buck lived and was later taken by a very happy hunter. Good Hunting sir
You remind me of all the gun hunters who want to video a bow hunt. Buy all the equipment, but don’t put in the work. Please go back to hunting with a gun
