The South Dorset Ridgeway is approximately 18 miles long running between Osmington Mills and West Bexington north of Weymouth. It is part of the South West Coast Path National Trail and offers an alternative inland walk from the coastal path.
So why did I want to walk it?
Well apart from the fact that it offers amazing views and so dramatically characterises the heart of Thomas Hardy's Wessex, the path runs along an ancient track which is loaded with historic monuments. The lumps along the way which are Neolithic and Bronze Age barrows are many, and there is also a 'small' stone circle and hill fort. It is said that the site historically rivals the more impressive Stonehenge and Avebury circles.
In this video I have tried to portray the heart of this trail all it's engaging historical atmosphere and wild vast landscapes.
