The South Georgia town of Fitzgerald is unique among Southern communities in that it was a planned community, developed in the late 1800s as a home for Civil War veterans from both the North and South. That's not the only special claim to fame for Fitzgerald, though. They also have a flock of thousands of wild chickens that call the community home. The Monitor's Ray D'Alessio explains.

They probably started as feral chickens of different breeds. Haphazard mating and breeding may have reduced the characteristics of the Primeval breed back to the original Prototype. The grand daddy of them all: the South East Asian jungle fowl. Same thing happened in Key West, FL and in HI
@seankennedy5074
@seankennedy5074 6 лет назад
According to the video they are the descendants of pure red jungle fowl who were released into a nearby town from where they moved into Fitzgerald, acquiring some domesticated genes along the way.
@piosian4914
@piosian4914 8 лет назад
They are red jungle chickens. Roos goes about 4 lbs and hens about a pound less. They are among the best tasting chicken around. Older ones get a little tough, cockerels are best. That could be a revenue source if they allow hunting say with newer air rifles.

I Grew up on a small farm, 30 - 40 Acres, 4 milking cows, 2 lage horse's, A pig, Who was replaced once or twice a year, And 30 too 40 Chickens, Who did any thing they wanted, Until it came time to eat one of them, That was panic time for the chickens, And it was always Gwens favorite chicken that ended up being cooked, The chickens were fed at the kitchen Dore wonce or twice a day, Or when one of them was going to be cooked, What I did notice is that we did not have any Fly's, ants, Or Beatles, In the farmhouse. Them chickens took care of that. We also had one house cat, And three barn cat's, + A house dog. So if feed is put out for the chickens, They can do a good job, of pest control.

Thousands of years ago in Roman Britain people worshipped chickens. The same goes for ancient Egypt and many other cultures around the world. Only recently did people start using them as a food source. They make great pets too and provide near infinite eggs (though this can vary depending on the breed). And on top of that they provide free pest control by eating crop destroying insects and rats and mice, and for all the arachnophobes out there they control spiders too
