South Halsted Street: Driving through Southside Chicago 4K: Streets of the Americas

Ever driven through famous south side Chicago neighborhoods? That is exactly what we are going to do today. Buckle up and ride northbound along with me up South Halsted Street towards West Loop. We will be driving through neighborhoods of Washington Heights, Auburn Gresham, Englewood, Canaryville, Back of the Yards, Bridgeport, Pilsen, Little Italy, UIC and eventually end up in West Loop.
For folks not familiar with Chicago, Halsted Street is a north south thoroughfare that starts from 147th street in south suburb of Dixmoor and Riverdale and run all the way up to north side Chicago ending at the confluence of Grace Street and Broadway close to Wrigleyville and Boystown neighborhoods. Halsted Street is 800 west in Chicago grid system. This one of the streets in Chicago that travels through some diverse sets of neighborhoods. Today we will be driving northbound from 95th street in Washington Heights in south side to Lake Street in West Loop neighborhood. The drive is 11.4 miles and duration is approximately 35 minutes. Time stamp 15:26 red building on right (Willie's Hardware) my German great grandfather lived there in early 1900's and also had a hardware store in that exact store front. Thanks for taking us along for a drive.

I grew up on Halsted street in the 50's and 60's. On the NW corner of Garfield Blvd that was LeMecs restaurant. Just north of that is now a grocery store. That used to be Colonial Savings Bank. Right across Halsted was the Halfield theatre. At 63rd and Halsted there was a gigantic Sears department store. That area was loaded with stores, restaurants, and theatres. It rivaled downtown. Sad to see when so many factories and businesses left the south side. There were jobs for everyone and those empty boarded up buildings had many black businesses. That time will never return.

Lived over by 81st, and Halsted in the 60's. Its a shame how 79th. St. looks now. Was a bustling street corner in my days.

In the 1970s there was a wrestler who went by the name of the One Man Gang, who said he was from S. Halsted St. I was wondering whether Halsted Street on the southside was a bad part of town. It seems like he chose that location as for a reason.
