The history of South Haven, Michigan, dates back to the early 1800s, when it was inhabited by the Ottawa, Miami, and Potawatomi Native American tribes. The area was known to the tribes as "Ni-Ko-Nong," which translates to "beautiful sunsets.“ South Haven's history as a town began in the early 1830s when European settlers arrived in the area, primarily attracted by the natural harbor on Lake Michigan. The settlement was originally called "Black River" due to the nearby river, which was often stained black by the tannin from the swamps and forests. South Haven's natural harbor and proximity to Lake Michigan led to the town's growth as a maritime community. The harbor became a hub for shipping, including lumber and agricultural products. The South Haven Lighthouse, first built in 1872, continues to stand as an iconic symbol of the town.
