South Hood-South Sound TWO STEP (steamer clams, oysters, dig and cook)

Although only 30 minutes apart the tides in deep southern Puget Sound can run two hours behind the tides of southern Hood Canal. This allows for a nice day of shellfishing in two radically different (yet highly productive) locations! Join me, and maybe you'll even learn a dance move or two! #pugetsound #hoodcanal

Right on, great Video! Cut myself shucking oysters for New Years and it got nasty! 3 mos later it finally healed and left a scar.

Oh wow. I appreciate the precautionary tale! I've cut myself on oysters so many times. But I'll watch myself a bit more in the future. Maybe invest in a second glove... Ha ha!

Those Steamers clams looked great, I think I'd sink in that mud though! 😆. Great video Blake.

Right on!! I thought my group were the only ones doing the "two step" - love being able to take home multiple species. Thanks for the tour of the scenery as well - I had no clue Johns Creek was so interesting... thanks for the great video as always 👍🏼

After steaming steamer clams I like to remove clams from shell and then put deshelled clams in the refrigerator for couple hours to chill them. I then mix Pride Of The Northwest batter mix with milk and coat the deshelled steamer clams in batter and fry about five at a time in half inch to an inch deep of olive oil in a small saucepan on medium heat until gold brown.

As I like to day, It isn't a real project until you bleed for it." In Oregon, there is no legal take of "wild" oysters. Our native oyster is endangered and anything that isn't the native is commercially grown. The only oyster I've had was a deep fried one and it was like eating hot snot. I still want to try a fresh one, though. Thanks for keeping in that camera fall. I got a good chuckle out of it. We've all been there, where we set something up to keep it out of the mud but the wind has different plans. Sorry I'm getting a bit wordy, but this episode was just so engaging. That South Sound Prairie looks a lot like Willamette Valley Oaken Savanna. We're in a similar situation where we have just tiny fractions of it as well.

I always enjoy your wordy (or brief, both good!) posts Jarom! And appreciate feedback about the episode being engaging. I can replicate that a bit more. I did not know that about Oregon. Bummer! Puget Sound, and especially Hood Canal, is very oyster rich. Only 18 a day. But hey a dozen will run you $10, so not to bad. They are an acquired taste for sure... They actually have really different flavors. Some people oyster taste like cheese tasting. That said I also don't really care for like a breaded fried oyster. I enjoy them slurped, baked w/bacon, in a stew, and in a "fry"/hashed. My favorite way to eat an oyster tho, is smoked!

Such a good episode! We do this with razors since we live in Central washington. Razors then catch the hood canal tide for clams and oysters..makes for a long trip but its worth it!

That does it, time to get my Washington fish license, I didn't even know there were places where you could harvest oysters still, I love raking up the clams in the mud flat, but the oyster sure look good especially fresh!
@WAFishQuest
@WAFishQuest 2 года назад
If you did that and wanted to hit up Hood Canal, could do a collab! Hood Canal is covered in oysters. Like some areas are just thousands upon thousands at a -1.0 or lower tide. (This video was filmed on a -0.1).

Entertaining as always Blake, my wife has oyster bed battle scars, and my oldest daughter fell down into them our last trip and earned herself some scars. I've managed to avoid getting torn up, bit I'm sure it will happen soon enough.
