Very evocative video thanks again. Gosh the glacier has receded heaps since I was there in the late 80's when I could easliy walk up to it. It was dirty with gravel and crushed rock at the face but when you looked into it you could see this deep, deep blue clour. I seem to remember it making a creaking sound. Stay safe, Melb Si

Starting another Sunday with a big smile thanks to yet another of your feel-good vlogs! NZ tourism needs to thank you! Stunning videography and was amused to see you found a BIG thing - a kiwi no less! The tractor pulling a boat on the water had me totally cracked up too - you wouldn’t think sea water (if in fact it is salty) would do the tractor much good! Cheveyo, I score you a solid 8/10 for your attempt at a NZ accent! Great to see your back is feeling much better Tia!

Tia, as someone with a long-term back disability, you have all my sympathy. The truth is that, if we live long enough, everyone will eventually get a disability of some kind, and they can be, as the name implies, extremely debilitating.

As someone who approaching 30 years with arthritis I don't wish pain on anyone, while you can learn to ignore the pain, that causes other problems. I have moved to a warmer climate for pain management, it was worth it, as winters are always more painful for me.

I come from Marlborough and used to work in Franz Josef. I cannot believe how far back the glacier has gone back! When I was there it was coming forward 1-2m per day and you could walk to the bottom in about 40mins or less. When you come back up from the Haast side, there is a beautiful little walk at Ship Creek (say that fast 5 times) and it has a beach walk and a forest walk that are super easy but so lovely. The beach one is perfect at sunset and the forest one is lovely whatever the day - raining it's amazing! I love the West Coast scenery! Mountains, Lakes, bush, birds etc. I can't remember if you what path you are taking next - I think it's over to Christchurch. I went on a couple of university trips around the Mt Cass area- just on the otherside of Arthur's Pass township. I have very fond memories of that whole area too!

The reason you see a rainforrest is unfortunately its become too warm to sustain the glacier down the mountain. It's a shame people still don't believe in the climate crisis. The glaciers of NZ are expected to disappear completely and are doing so are at a rapid pace. The birdlife has been decimated. Because there is little to no mamals birds had no preditors until humans arrived. The biggest problem was the introduction of, mongoose, austtralian possums and rats etc.

A simple way to think of the damage human kind have brought to these islands is….. Apart from native bats, if it’s got four legs and warm blood… it’s been imported! 😱 None of them have done the local fauna and flora any good. ☹️

My unsolicited advice for Tia, as someone who has had back issues for years (since scoliosis as a teenager) is: work on building up your core muscles, abdominals and back muscles, which will in turn cushion your spine and hold it in alignment, to feel less pain, twists and twinges. I noticed this massively when I started working with a personal trainer… I have almost no back pain, twists and twinges now since working out for a year. As travellers, I don’t think gyms are necessary with the amount of videos and fitness apps online to help you target some daily core routines to add to your already very active lifestyle hiking around this amazing world😊. However, if you’re ever in place for a week or two, I think it’s worth it to pay for 1-2 one-on-one sessions with an expert to get you on your way properly (correctly) with a tool-kit to work on eliminating your back issues, during your travels.

Back in the 80's we walked on the glacier which was way down the valley. It was so warm walking (with ice boots and a pointed staff) that half way through we were down to tshirts and wishing we could take them off. Walking through brilliant blue ice caves which would form overnight and be gone a day or so later. Magic! Enjoy the rest of the country. I was 18 and left South Austraia on a working holiday in NZ and returned almost 6 years later. The Pancake Rocks seem to be fenced off now. We laid on them back them, and sat on them eating our lunches. 40 years brings a lot of changes, just saying.

Watching from Wellington. Just a hint. If you plan more walks it is a realllllllly good idea to have decent shoes. New Zealand walks aren't just 'a walk in the park' and it's a good idea to be serious about footwear. Love your video, I have pictures of me in a glacial crevasse on Franz Joseph, from what doesn't seem like that long ago. It's incredible how much it has receeded.
