This is driving the new South Mountain Freeway from I10 to 17th Avenue. The Loop 202 in Phoenix Az will expedite their travel time from East Phx to West Phoenix. The 22 mile stretch of freeway is expected to be completed by 2020.
Home Home The Phoenix area highways are clean and well maintained but to be fair this is a brand new highway so it’s nicer than what you would normally see.
They don't experience freeze thaw cycles like most other US cities do. It's funny cause most places with bad roads aren't super cold or super warm. Places like Miami and Phoenix are too warm and places like Minneapolis / St Paul are too far north and basically stay frozen till winter ends. That's why basically from southern Wisconsin to Tennessee you get terrible potholes and such.
Jeff, most of the land south of the 202 you were on, is reservation land so not much will be built on that side. I think those power lines have been there for years so not really part of anticipated growth to the South of the 202.
@@BellyJae I hear ya on that! You should see some of the potholes we have here in New Orleans. The local radio station actually has a running pothole picture contest. Also, there was a huge pothole that was neglected for years......so long that it actually had a tree growing out of it! Ridiculous.
I drove my 1993 Ford Truck on this new section of the 202 shortly after it opened both ways. I also work for a sweeping company where one of our lots we clean is on the west side. The South Mountain Freeway segment of the 202 provides a nice alternate route. Now we no longer have to always take I-10.
@Buster Brown Sadly, that is false. Our groundwater is ultimately fed by mountain runoff and the rivers that branch off from the Colorado. When those sources run low, so will our groundwater. Nearly all of our agricultural water ultimately comes from the Colorado River, which we get to complete with Colorado and Cali over who gets how much. We're already starting to run low.
There has been a little development on the reservation side of Loop 202. Pecos Storage is over by 32nd St. The casino hotels within driving distance of the 40th St and future Vee Quiva Way exits.

I remember me and the wife taking Chandler rd all the way till it dead ends practically and it was a drive but I never really been on that side of the mountain
mace nigdu This side used to be Pecos Road and I believe it used to dead end at Chandler Blvd and then later they closed it off so it ended at 17th Ave. It’s been interesting to see it slowly transform into a freeway. From what I’ve read, the old Pecos Road will be repurposed as a pedestrian trail.
The south Mountain extension of the 202 cuts across the Salt River Pima Rez (on leased land). There will not be major construction. That Rez land cannot be sold to developers (thank God). The purpose of the 202 extension is to link the west valley with Chandler and relieve traffic congestion in central and downtown Phoenix.
Part of Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) is on the Salt River Reservation, near Scottsdale. None of Loop 202 is on the Gila River Reservation (the open land on the left side of the video). The power lines along the freeway mark the border between the rez and the city limits of Phoenix (Ahwatukee).
@@chuckonwubu1458 Thank you for the correction. Thankfully the Rez land on the left will remain open. I have lived in central AZ for decades. We have had more than enough sprawl.

I drove on this freeway past week as I was in Paradise Valley and later at the Outlets in Chandler. Phoenix is wonderful however there a few issues 1. You must like hot weather 2. Tech Jobs are scarce BTW : I heard there are plans to build a tech hub between Tuscan and Phoenix.
It helps that the opening of that section of freeway has somehow gone under the radar. Also, it will eventually end at I-10. Once that happens, the traffic will really start to pick up compared to what you see now.
The area it goes around the west side of South Mountain is the hold up. They had to blast thru 2 mountains. It's being paved now. If you would have went further and took a left. You would drive up the mountain. They built a community between the two mountains. From the top of the first mountain you can see the road construction to the west.
Well paved smooth road. It's a shame that they had to tear down Goldman Ranch to build the freeway. Those houses only lasted 21 years (constructed in 1994, demolished in 2015).
Come back after Christmas. The full mainline freeway is scheduled to open on Mon Dec 23 or Tue Dec 24. There will be a "freeway celebration" on Sat Dec 21 in the Laveen section (think near 59th Ave and Elliot Rd). Some interchanges, frontage roads and cross streets will see construction into 2020.
There is a proposal for AZ 30 (the Tres Rios Freeway) that would be an I-10 reliever. It would go from Loop 303 in Goodyear to Loop 202 near the Salt River Bridges (south of Broadway and west of the 59th Ave alignment).
Adot like doing that crap for some reason they done that on I10 at the 202 interchange in the east valley. But they just blocked the on ramp for 202 west but i10 lanes were lost alone but they had signs out telling everyone slow down to 45 mph out by the 347.
I just read that this new Loop 2020 South Mountain freeway will be completed 3 years ahead of schedule and with $100 million in savings through an “innovative partnership."
Regarding the comments about the new 202 freeway extension and its proximity to the Gila River Indian Reservation. The new section straddles just north of the Ahwahtukee foothills/GRIR. Once the freeway extends just beyond south mountain, it will then be going through the GRIR. The Freeway will return to the city of Phoenix around 51st Ave and about 1.5 miles south of Estrella Dr.
That highway is on Indian Land south of that is more of my native American Indian Land sucks that they will build shopping centers and homes on our land
